Plans are being made for a get together for members and staff of TheDarkTower.com
We are going to LAS VEGAS!
The party starts Friday October 17th, 2008 and will continue into Monday October 20th.
Preliminary plans have most people staying 2 nights (Friday and Saturday), although some are coming earlier and some are staying longer.
I myself plan on staying at The Monte Carlo (http://www.montecarlo.com/). Rooms in Vegas range in price from very cheap to very expensive, but almost always are more on Friday and Saturday nights.
Here is a site that lists the Top 10 Hotels by price, pools, etc.
Link (http://hotels.about.com/od/lasvegas/Las_Vegas_Hotel_Reviews.htm)
We have yet to decide on an official time and place for all to meet, and that will be a source of discussion here. It would seem that Saturday evening would be the time when anyone and everyone who is coming would be available, but again, that is open for discussion.
Let the discussion, and the parties begin!

Is there any possibility that we could all get together and try to pick one hotel in the hopes they would give us a group rate? Also, could we maybe get a room to all meet in? Just questions, I will be saving up my dough to try to do this, it sounds exciting!

I believe that we are trying to take over the Monte Carlo--so we can be in the same hotel. But that is not required of course.

If we get enough people together, we'll get a place to meet for sure. For now, we can all plan to meet in me and Dora's room to start. :cowboy:

Fire breaks out at Vegas' Monte Carlo

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A fire broke out Friday on the roof of the Monte Carlo hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip and quickly spread, engulfing the resort's top floors.
"The building is being evacuated," said Gordon Absher, spokesman for the hotel owner, MGM Mirage Inc. He said he had no immediate information whether anyone was hurt in the fire.
The three-alarm fire, which began just before 11 a.m., was spreading from the center section of the hotel across the roof line. Flames and plumes of black smoke could be seen on what appeared to a west-facing rooftop of the resort.
Flaming embers fell to the street below.
Las Vegas fire spokesman Tim Szymanski says city and county firefighters were on the scene, and some firefighters could be seen on the roof.
A dispatcher at American Medical Response said ambulances were being dispatched to the scene, but said there were no immediate reports of injuries.
Huge crowds formed to watch the fire, and traffic on the Las Vegas Strip was gridlocked as streets were blocked off around the hotel. Helicopters circle overhead.
The Monte Carlo Resort & Casino has more than 3,000 guest rooms and opened in June 1996.
The 32-story casino-hotel modeled after the Place du Casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco, was a joint venture between Steve Wynn's Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus Enterprises.
It is now owned by MGM Mirage Inc. and is planned to be linked by a monorail that will connect it to the CityCenter casino complex and Bellagio to the north.

Will there be a lot of gambling? I'm really not into it.

Daghain

There's a ton of touristy stuff you can do in Vegas, if you're not into gambling.

obscurejude
01-25-2008, 12:50 PM
I was just saying that if I went, it would be to meet everyone and talk about the Dark Tower. If there was just a ton of gambling, it wouldn't be worth the trip for me personally. I live in North Carolina.

Daghain

I would imagine most people are going for the social aspect, and not the gambling.

Wuducynn
01-25-2008, 01:07 PM
You HAVE to gamble or no one will talk to you. Also, you HAVE to pick up some hookers, its part of the whole event.

Matt

wow. Vegas??! That's going to be a hell of a time. :)

I'm not going to say anything yet. because i usually say i'm gonna go, and then i end up not. i guess it all depends on my job/money situation by that point.

I'm thinking that the whole Monte Carlo thing is just foreshadowing. ;)

How much would a place like that cost?

Usually rooms in Vegas are relatively cheap, they expect you to lose all your money gambling

If you aren't going to share with someone, for that hotel, I would say probably 90-100 per night.

Daghain
01-25-2008, 02:29 PM
I think Jerome said it was $179.

I generally wait until 5 or 6 months before to book a room, although I've done it as late as 30 days. You wait that late, though, and you'll probably have to take what you can get. There are cheaper places to stay.

Randall Flagg

I was having a beer just before going to see Rambo.
I look up at the Tv in the pub, and see a hotel on fire in Vegas, I immediately said. "Oh shit, that looks like the Monte Carlo". As the helipcopter swings around the building, sure enough I could see the name of the hotel.
I told my son, "I am going to hear shit about this!"

Wuducynn

Kevin

I will probably not be able to go for a variety of reasons:

a) age (to young to be allowed to go, to young to drink legally, to young to gamble)
b) money
c) School interfering on the Friday/Monday
d) Its 3,500 miles away.

I will try my hardest. If I take a year off and travel, this will be a non-issue and I will see you all there. :D

:D

If its going to be on mainland USA (which makes sense for obvious reasons) then LA would be the best city if we ever could make it to the states. Diem wants to go back so im definitely not ruling it out. 2009 or 2010 maybe.

Although if we come, keep in mind we're forsaking having kids for a few years to meet you fuckfaces :)

Edit: I like the san fran idea aswell, its pretty much the same cost from Aus and is closer for the Canananananadians

ZoNeSeeK
01-31-2008, 04:47 PM
Its hard, we want to do stuff to the house and want to travel and want to have kids

I guess the best order to do that in would be to travel, but try and be thrifty or something, and have kids / do house up at the same time. The house is always an ongoing project so that is probably the thing that can wait.

Matt
01-31-2008, 04:49 PM
I had my kids very young and had to wait until my late 30's to travel. Your way may make more sense.

ZoNeSeeK
01-31-2008, 04:59 PM
Yeah, having kids young is definitely restrictive but you have more time later on, and you're more financially secure aswell.

With the travel thing - part of me wants to see the States because of the amount of reading and cultural references etc which involve the USA, its almost a little overwhelming when you think about it, and a small part of me feels like a bit of a charlatan if I haven't been there to fully appreciate where this stuff is coming from, you know?

The hotel is VERY cool. They used to have a bit of a Stephen King shrine there, but I think they took it out in the last remodel. The bar is extremely cool, however, and was featured in the movie "Dumb and Dumber".

Stupid movie, but the bar scenes give you a good idea of how it looks.

Australia, US to sign open skies agreement
15th February 2008, 11:30 WST

Australia and the United States have signed the long-awaited Open Skies Agreement which could make trans-Pacific travel substantially cheaper.

Transport Minister Anthony Albanese will hold a press conference in Sydney this afternoon to discuss the signing of the landmark agreement with the US earlier today.

That agreement will allow additional Australian and US airlines to operate between the two countries and remove restrictions on competition.

Negotiation began under the previous government.

Almost two million passengers fly between the US and Australia each year.

I know this might not seem like a big deal but for us over here it is. The previous government had a choke-hold agreement over the coveted Sydney -> LA route with Qantas, which is why travel between Aus and the US has been stupidly overpriced for so long - alternate routes via Tokyo and Singapore are still expensive because of the additional transit. They made motions to open up the agreement when put under pressure from the airline industry and general public and its finally been signed! Trans-Indian ocean flights are substantially cheaper (half the price) than Sydney -> LA flights, which is stupid considering the business ties and tourism we share with the States.

We could see fares come under $2000 return from sydney to LA! So next gathering it might be an option for us.

What is the drinking/gambling age in Vegas?
21/21

Since it is the other side of the continent and since I would not be able to (legally) drink or (legally) gamble and since I would be only 17 I'm not sure this will work out. What would I do? Sit around and comfort you all as your wasted your money and drank your sorrows to the former?

I plan on travelling the US and Canada starting in July, so I may be able to get to Vegas during those 4 days, but I'm not sure I could afford or enjoy 4 whole days of nothing. A day to meet you all would be fantastic, but then I'd probably have to mosey on.

I gotta go with Daggers here. Matt, I commend your sobriety but I think you'll be the minority. The big issue is money. It's going to be an expensive trip without staying in a hotel for 3 nights, even a cheap-ass hotel. If I stayed for all 3, I'd probably have to stay in a hostel, which would probably be far away from everyone else. Unless someone has a room I could rent its pretty sketch right now.

Matt
02-19-2008, 11:07 AM
I never said I'd be sober, just that I wouldn't drink in an official bar.

Kevin
02-19-2008, 11:10 AM
Why's that?

Matt
02-19-2008, 11:15 AM
Because there might be underage folks there and it wouldn't be nice to just sit in the bar during a get together.

In the summer. It's nice and hot, there's a beach, and plenty of liquor. But then again, Are we really going to want to go swimming? I'm self conscious as hell, and wouldn't want to take my shirt off in front of all you strangers.

We can have it in the Twin Cities. You can all shack up with me...I'm sure Rjeso/Laura will let some people crash on her couch too. :)

I think we plan to do pretty much what we do here. Hang out and talk about the Tower, each other--family, Roland...that kind of thing.

... for 5 minutes and then... drinking, hookers and gambling

Be sure to bring "Lawyers, Guns and Money."
