Another Gilliam flick... I love it, it's funny, it's just not 100% comedy to me, this time it got a vote since I am not really a fan of most of the others here, except This Is Spinal Tap, of course, one of the most hilariously quotable films of all time!

Catch it on Netflix (or elsewhere), it's one of the most clever comedies ever. It sits somewhere between spoof and satire, and its iconic status is on par with that of Airplane!

Fantastic comedy.

Spinal Tap is THE quotable comedy dude.

Nigel Tufnel: You know, just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like — I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really. It's sort of...
Marty DiBergi: What do you call this?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump."
-

Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you make ten a little louder, make that the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pauses] These go to eleven.

I know, right? I've always meant to watch it. I like Reiner as a director, and I can quote many of the famous lines from it. It's from a genre I really really like, so there's no excuse other than "haven't gotten around to it."
I suspect it will make it through, and perhaps I will have a chance to watch it before the next votes are due.

As for Major League, I'm a huge baseball fan and this one tickles my funny bone more than most. A 5-star comedy to be sure. I can see how a person who doesn't like or follow baseball might not pick up on some of the little things, but there should be enough gags and funny situations to produce a few laughs.

I watched Withnail and I last year after DoctorDodge just wouldn't shut up about it. :) I did find it funny, and it got a vote from me!

Oh yeah, I'm not disputing the greatness of Spinal Tap in terms of quotability. It's definitely a classic. It's one of the only films that's up there with W&I for us Essex folk.

But just to remind ya of how fantastic Withnail & I is:

"You got soup? Why didn't I get any soup?" "Coffee."

"We want the finest wines available to humanity! We want them here, and we want them now!"

"I fuck arses? Who fucks arses?...Maybe he fucks arses!"

And my personal favourite:
"Jesus Christ! Why have you drugged their onions?!"

Also, the entire Stonehenge bit is just too much.

"I think the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage in danger of being crushed by a dwarf."

Stonehenge is fucking legendary! "I don't see this as a big problem." "No, no, if it were a big problem, we wouldn't be having this conversation!"

Vote for the 2 greatest quotable films of all-time, guys. Vote for Spinal Tap and Withnail & I.

I agree it certainly is something. I take it to mean that my taste in comedic movies lines up pretty well with a greater number of people here than I previously thought. I think there is a vocal minority that was skewing that perception. Of the 75 or so that I’ve actually seen and enjoyed, only 6 have been eliminated so far and most of the rest look like they will move on as well.

There are a handful of movies in here that I want to see eventually but only one or two that I’d never heard of. Most of the rest I doubt I’ll ever get to.

I agree, all three are good (though I'm not sure a short like The Music Box is really appropriate among features, but I'm okay either way). I would like to avoid having to have tiebreakers for the last group, as that will prolong the first round by a week.

I'm not sure a short like The Music Box is really appropriate among features
I could have gone ahead and nominated The Flying Deuces and probably gotten another second. If we had ended up with a situation where every group in Round 1 had a Laurel and Hardy picture and a Danny Kaye picture, plus one of Bill Murray's roles, a Mel Brooks movie, a Zucker Bros., a Coen Bros., a Marx Bros., and a Kevin Smith movie, that might have been more fair than what we have now, where that's basically halfway true. Maybe not the best way to use the 200 openings assigned to begin with, but this is one of the biggest problems with these polls. Everybody has a different outlook and their own policy. If you associate related works to a given competitor, it creates an advantage over a film that stands alone... particularly if you choose to ignore the negative associations. Somebody could look at the whole Police Academy series and just say "That's a lot of laughs." To admit that there are also more scenes that are NOT funny in the whole set than there are in any one of the movies requires that they decide to look at it that way. Of course it is easier to write a short film like this one that keeps you laughing the whole way through than it is to do the same for two hours. But we probably should have dealt with this before now. It might not be right to just vote for something else and pretend that the same issue doesn't still exist in the way we are judging some but not all of the other comedians as if the full context of moviemaking around them was less important.

mae
03-15-2015, 08:40 PM
Meanwhile we're still tied here for sixth! Gotta break that tie!

mae

The poll has closed. The following six titles are moving on to the next round:

Major League (1989) 53.57%
This Is Spinal Tap (1984) 42.86%
See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) 35.71%
Brazil (1985) 25.00%
Mister Roberts (1955) 25.00%
The Music Box (1932) 25.00%

And the following four titles have been eliminated:

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) 21.43%
Withnail and I (1987) 21.43%
Meet the Feebles (1989) 17.86%

Little known fact about Major League. The White Sox actually won the world series in that movie. It's not brought up until the sequel and it's kind of a throw-away line by Harry Doyle but it's there.

Since the White Sox are the "villian" team in the sequel he says something about how they beat the Indians in the championship series and then lucked out again in the World Series.

EDIT:
