hmmmm, a bunch of self absorbed jerkoffs getting together celebrating how wonderful they are, patting themselves on the back, and handing out awards to eachother.

I'll pass

If your employers were having a banquet to honor you for a job well done, you wouldn't go?

Was anyone else surprised that Sweeney Todd wasn't nominated for Best Picture. It won at the Golden Globes so I assumed it would've at least been nominated.

I was a little surprised, but then again it won the Globe for best musical/comedy.

Once it got mixed in with the other films, I guess it just didn't have enough to get a nom.

I do think that Depp has a good chance to take away the trophy though.

Cry your pardon sir, sometimes I let my inside voice get a little out of control and come out at times when it's not really appropriate. I really have very little but disdain for Hollywood.

So do I, and I hope he does get it. He deserves it. It's surprising that he hasn't won an oscar yet.

I'm so glad to see all the nominations for Juno! I'm for it in any category it's nominated for.

It's been in the top 5 highest-grossing films for what, a month?

Supposedly it's generated more money for whatever production house released it than any previous film.

Pretty bad year, imo. Especially considering I've usually seen at least two of the movies getting nom for Best Picture. Country and Blood had far too limited a release around here. It was too predictable, the films that would show up here because there was only a handful of good (as in oscar worthy) films out this year. I'm even less interested this year than I was last year.

Since I haven't seen the movies that will win the big awards I can't add much besides I thought Michael Clayton deserves an 8/10 from me, the directing was solid and Wilkinson was phenomenal but I'm sure will be beat by Bardem. Some categories look completely weak like Song and Make Up.

I think No Country for Old Men is open pretty much everywhere now. There Will Be Blood should be opening everywhere soon I think.

If you get the chance, you should see No Country For Old Men. What about Juno, have you seen that?

There are also a lot of great movies that were out this year that didn't get Oscar nods. Some were not released very widely (The Savages, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Jesse James) along with some other big movies that I thought were good (3:10 To Yuma, Eastern Promises, The Bourne Ultimatum, Superbad).

I could go on and on. I thought it was a great year in cinema for all types of movies. Too bad more of them weren't released in more theaters. I guess Hollywood only cares about realeasing Saw XXVIII and the other overhyped sequels.

oh and I saw Juno last night. I think Diablo Cody should win best original screenplay.

3 women are nominated for orginal screenplay this year. I hope Cody takes it.

For adapted screenplay it's probably between Old Men and Blood.

It's not as much of where it's released but when. I think Country opened around the same time as The Mist. I'd much rather see Action/Horror in theatres than something dramatic or comedy, DVD is great for that.

Yeah, but compare this year to films where great performances and great movies didn't make the cut because there was so much great stuff. 2003 has been my favourite year for movies this decade. Some of my all-time favourite came out that year. I'm sure Juno is a great movie but if released any other year wouldn't gotten into the best picture category.

This year is the same 5-10 movies in most awards.

Lets not forget all the attrocious movies that were released this year. I can't recall a year when there was only one movie release a week, if I'm lucky, I'm the least bit interested. When I think good movies
(that I've seen) made this year:

Zodiac
1408
The Mist
3:10 To Yuma
Superbad
American Gangster
Bourne Ultimatum
Reign over Me

not a very big list. If you mean all types of movies as in bad movies then yeah, a large variety of them this year. It really shows how rushed studios were to get as many movies made as possible before the WGA strike happened. Even movies I was looking forward to (Transformers, Spider-man 3, AVP:R) were all pretty much turds.

Well, I think we may have to agree to disagree on this one. Every year there are tons of bad movies released. This year is no different.

I think that once you see some of the years better pictures, you may change your mind.

From what I remember, 2003 is the year Return of the King took everything. While there is no movie of that magnitude this year, the other films nominated with it are not better than the films this year.

Master & Commander was ok. I didn't really like Lost in Translation & Cold Mountain. Mystic River was great, but if I were to be honest, I liked Gone Baby Gone (same writer) better and it didn't even come close to getting best picture consideration.

Here are my lists for movies I've seen & ones I hope to see:

Movies I've seen this year that are good

No Country for Old Men
Eastern Promises
The Bourne Ultimatum
Sicko (gotta give love to the docs)
Juno
Gone Baby Gone (Got lost in the suffle, doesn't get enough attention)
Hairspray (Not everybody's cup of tea, but still good)
Rescue Dawn (see Gone Baby Gone)
Michael Clayton
The Savages
Hot Fuzz
3:10 to Yuma
Zodiac
Superbad
Knocked Up
American Gangster
The Mist

Movies I hope to see that are supposed to be good

Once (has the highest approval rating of any movie from 07 on Rotten Tomatoes.
The King Of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
The Host
There Will Be Blood
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Sweeney Todd

Maybe it's just me but there are some really good films on those lists. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few too.

There are also some films that I really like but other peope either hated or didn't give a shit about (Shoot 'em Up and Stardust come to mind.)

In the end, it's hard comparing films from one year to another. It's like wondering who is the better team this years Patriots' or the '85 Bears.

Fun to talk about, but nobody really knows.

I was digging around and thought it would be fun to read through an old Oscar thread. Matt, are you still subscribing to this feeling?
