View Full Version : The Collectible Joe Abercrombie

I just was wondering , that nobody here mentioned the great Abercrombie ;D

I started reading the First Law trilogy a couple of years ago, and re-read it at
least 4 times now, and he made it on #2 of my all time favorite authors.

He is publishing on a more or less once a year base on Sub.Press
and a fantastic author in the fantasy genre!

I will add infos to the collectable books soon, but if you liked
Game of Thrones you will love the first law!

The Books (until now) are grouped into 3 trilogies

1)
- The Blade Itself
- Last Argument of Kings
- Before They Are Hanged

2) // Not attached to the first three books, but playing in the same scenery
- Best Served Cold
- The Heroes
- Red Country

3) // New setting
- Half a King
- Half a World
- (coming 2016) Half a War

All books where issues as a S/L from our friends at Subterranean Press.
With every book you had the right of first refusal on the next (1-8 until now) but there always have some been available after the "save-periode"

Even now there are single copies of The Heroes and Red Country available at the press, while Best Served Cold is allready selling for 2x the issue price on eBay. (?!)

From his official website

Joe Abercrombie was born in Lancaster, England, on the last day of 1974. He was educated at the stiflingly all-boy Lancaster Royal Grammar School, where he spent much of his time playing computer games, rolling dice, and drawing maps of places that don’t exist. He went on to Manchester University to study Psychology. The dice and the maps stopped, but the computer games continued. Having long dreamed of single-handedly redefining the fantasy genre, he started to write an epic trilogy based around the misadventures of thinking man’s barbarian Logen Ninefingers. The result was pompous toss, and swiftly abandoned.

The Author, Joe AbercrombieJoe then moved to London, lived in a stinking slum with two men on the borders of madness, and found work making tea for minimum wage at a TV Post-Production company. Two years later he left to become a freelance film editor, and has worked since on a dazzling selection of documentaries, awards shows, music videos, and concerts for artists ranging from Barry White to Coldplay.

This job gave him a great deal of time off, however, and gradually realising that he needed something more useful to do than playing computer games, in 2002 he sat down once again to write an epic fantasy trilogy based around the misadventures of thinking man’s barbarian Logen Ninefingers. This time, having learned not to take himself too seriously in the six years since the first effort, the results were a great deal more interesting.

With heroic help and support from his family the first volume, The Blade Itself, was completed in 2004. Following a heart-breaking trail of rejection at the hands of several of Britain’s foremost literary agencies, The First Law trilogy was snatched up by Gillian Redfearn of Gollancz in 2005 in a seven-figure deal (if you count the pence columns). A year later The Blade Itself was unleashed on an unsuspecting public. It now has publishers in thirteen countries. The sequels, Before They are Hanged and Last Argument of Kings were published in 2007 and 2008, when Joe was a finalist for the John W. Campbell award for best new writer. Best Served Cold, a standalone book set in the same world, was published in June 2009, and a second standalone, The Heroes, came in January 2011 and made no. 3 on the Sunday Times Hardcover Bestseller List. A third standalone, Red Country, was both a Sunday Times and New York Times Hardcover Bestseller in October 2012.

The first part of his Shattered Sea series, Half a King, came out in July 2014, with the other two, Half the World, and Half a War, due to be published January and July 2015.

Joe now lives in Bath with his wife, Lou, his daughters Grace and Eve, and his son Teddy. He spends most of his time writing edgy yet humorous fantasy novels…

Yep - those are the ones - it was for a charity event. I'll post them next week (my wife's busy on computer with work this weekend). I think I saw a couple more of them on eBay - but they were much more than what I paid.

Two incredible news in one posting.

2) a new first law trilogy is not less fantastic ;D

So glad i started that topic!

yes its crazy how the Blade increased in price in the last two years.
It seams that there a way less on the market then of the other two books - buts thats just gut feeling.

I was happy to get a matching set just this week, right after your goldsboros hint i found a seller in the UK who made me a very good offer for all three.

But i get the point, i am still not sure if i will continue with the Subpress Series for the Shattered Seas.
They just increased to 125,- + 50 Shipping per Book, you get a lot of signed 1/1 for that money

Hello folks
been lurking for a while, but thought I had join this thread since I am a collector of the hard back versions of Joe´s books. I looks like I cannot make a photo album as long as I am not a full blooded member with 5 posts. And I am not really keen on linking photos from a website to this place.
I own about 17-19 of Joe´s books and one comic book.

Me again (with post number 3 and counting)
Some years ago I bought the first law trilogy of ebay for 120 usd plus shipping. They were published in the US by PYR and stand about and inch smaller than the british editions from Gollancz. But they are still larger than the BCAs that were published in arrangement by Gollancz.
As to the PYR editions I am a little confused: They do have an ISBN number, and nowhere are they marked as BCAs, but they do not have a price on the inside of the covers so I guess they are "kind of" BCAs? Over the last year the going rates on ebay seem to be around 30-100 USD for each of the three PYR books. Do not get med started on the going prices of the first 3 Gollancz editions.

The later 3 books in the first law world (BSC, The Heroes and Red country) were all done by Orbit, and very well so I might add.

Ok, that was fun, looks like the posting of pictures works for me now. I hope I did not cause any nuisance with all the editing of the previous post. I had to try 5-6 times before I worked out how to copy the link directly from photo bucket.
Here is another one of LaK. To my great regret the DJ is missing from the SP edition, but I guess it would still go for around 50 USD on the open market. The small british book club edition on the right was sold to me as being a first/first from Gollancz, so it serves as a note to self on being less trustful when buying from the amazon marketplace.

Just received my lettered (SubPress) Half the World.
And although I am very happy with the numbered and lettered books so far (Half a King, Half the World), I am simply collecting too many limited editions (Is this even possible...too many books??) and have to make room for....more....
These four books are the first to go...with more to follow. I'll give this forum a try first. Anyone interested (see my ad elsewhere), do let me know.

quick question - what do you think Sig 1-3 authentic or not ?
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/905/o4EMHl.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/p5o4EMHlj)

Why i doubt ?

1) They look very sloppy, compared to all i have seen
2) #2 has 3 dips, i never saw that before
3) Seller sais, that #2 and #3 where signed at an event '11 - both differ to much for the same event to me
4) and i have 2 sigs that where proven that event, from different sources, they look exactly the same and totally different to #2 and #3

First its tough to make out anything in Joe's signature - except for the J, the A and what I presume is the final B in that second hump. I have over a dozen sig's and they are all pretty consistent - going back to the subpress limited's - so back a few years. Mostly all s/l and then a few fat signed books (like from the signed page) - so all authentic - and all consistent.

None have that third hump in #2, none of the J's look good in any of the three and there is no consistency in any of the A's - they all look bad. I would only buy those if they were my books and signed directly in front of me. None of them look good to me. Maybe they were all rushed?

Priest
01-26-2016, 11:18 AM
I have the same thoughts as what you said here. Also the fact that to Paul is written so perfectly aligned in all threes even though there should be five years in between. Maybe they were rushed, but the seller states that they where signed in front of him at the signing event - so why should this be rushed ?

But still I somebody doubt that they are fake
Seller has Great Feedback - Tons of Great Feedback ... I am unsure on this

SomekindofStranger and Priest: Thanks for the tip with the remaining stock. That is good to know.
Priest: If I had to guess, I would say the signatures are authentic. Abercrombie´s signature has changed a lot within the last ten years. Here are some pictures with signatures that look a lot like your picture 2 (with the three "waves") and your picture 3. And the timing is about right. And I think I remember that the signature in 2006 often had that same "J".

I believe thats usually a 3 or 4 digit code on the back of the card (by where you would sign your name).

I don't believe that is it at all, that's what I had thought at first, but I tried putting that in to no avail. It's some sort of buyer protection code for online purchasing... but I can't sign up for some reason. And unfortunately Paypal is not an option for Goldsboro apparently.

Bookfriend
01-26-2016, 12:06 PM
That would be the "card security code". I think Theli meant the extra "Mastercard secure code" that you have to pick for yourself. It sure is annoying but an extra layer of security, since the store is not able to see it. Just click the "Forgot code button" and enter your birthday, card expirery date and the last 4 digits of your bank account connected to your card, not the last 4 on the card itself.

cit74
01-26-2016, 02:33 PM
The MasterCard secure code came up for me too. I had set it up from some earlier purchase. It gave me the option to send the code to my phone - so it was a completely separate, random 6 digit code - I then typed that in to complete the purchase. But before I did this - it did give me the option to skip this step and just process the payment.

And thanks for the earlier posts on the signature - mine are all more recent - past 6 years - no triple humps on mine.

If they're reasonable prices for the books…

No - other books didn't have them individually - just a large one to house all 3 - guess bill wasn't sure of price point and adding an individual case woulda increased prices (I guess).

I don't think there were any cases for the blade itself trilogy, none for the stand alone books like red country or the heroes; so my assumption is this was the first series to have a slipcase offered

...and RC sold out not long ago from SP, so the prices are still low on the secondhand marked. Right now the best offer is probably the sale at camelotbooks.com for the original price of 80 USD. But with a little patience you might get a better price. One sold on ebay for 51 USD, auction-style 2 months back.

Most of these aren't so recent, to be honest. Just a bit lazy when it comes to updating my collections, haha. Thanks for the comments though!

Hi everyone, 1st post :)

I have all the SP Limited editions of Joe's work except The Blade Itself and the Heroes.
I just realized the Heroes is still not sold out on the website.
I wonder if I can get my number if I order now.

Probably not unless you have a number set. But it never hurts to ask. Check camelotbooks.com too if not.

I have a numbered set. I still had the same number for the Shattered Sea trilogy which were published later but just forgot to order the Heroes.
But yeah, I'll just ask I guess.

Joe Abercrombie also has a short story within 'Unbound' by Grim Oak Press. The signed and numbered editions are due out soon.

Looking to field offers on a set of Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy S/N matching in custom slipcase.

Also got a couple books up on my eBay. Deadhouse Gates and Locke Lamora. Will hear private offers on those as well.

Happy hunting, everybody!

I've been looking for SubPress' Best Served Cold for awhile now. It's pretty scarce right now on the secondary market.

If anyone still looking for a signed copy of the new First Law book The Trouble With Peace. This seller still has 5 copies available at $30.

Have SubPress announced a private preorder for The Trouble with Peace? I bought A Little Hatred on the secondary market, and so probably won't get an email from SubPress.

I haven't received notification on that yet, so it's probably some way off still.

The prices on the secondary market for the other SubPress First Law books have skyrocketed in value over the last few years.

I'm glad I bought 2 of A Little Hatred in early May.

I emailed Bill from Subterranean Press earlier about the numbered edition of A Little Hatred and he said the book is finished and in their warehouse.

He estimates end of December/early January when they'll be shipped out. I had a feeling it was close. No info on the lettered edition yet though.

Bill from SubPress shared the wrap around dust jacket for the limited of The Trouble with Peace today. And needless to say it's a beauty!

He also said that he doesn't anticipate that many will be available when the public pre-order starts. Glad I ordered A Little Hatred when I did so I don't have to worry about it.

Well done!

I picked up a standard edition, assuming the numbered was already gone. Noticed the numbered was still available, but it sold out while I had it in my cart. Very happy to get the standard edition, though.
