Pat is one of my favorite authors and if you are interested in the fantasy genre and haven't read The Name of the Wind yet.... well then you are missing out on the best fantasy novel in the last 50 years and probably one of the best ever.

He doesn't have a ton of collectible books out yet but he does have a few from Sub Press and his books already have a good value associated with them.

Aron, great start.

I will follow your advise :) The Name of the Wind is next after I'll finish "The Farseer trilogy"

I have few books (not TNOTW 1ST/1ST...) - will post photos later

I'll post a few pictures later also. I have a couple of 1st/1sts. I'm actually debating selling one of them. The Princess and Mr Whiffle books are good also. I know the 1st book which was released by SubPress goes for about $400+. 1st/1st of NOTW are probably in the $300+ range for a nice copy.

Here is one of my 1st/1sts. Signed, Lined, doodled (by the map artist) and remarqued (by cover artist) That's about as complete as you can get! :)

It's well documented that DAW did a horrible job with books. It's rare to find 1st/1sts NOTW that are in Fine condition.

Great pics Becca!! I am actually friends with Nate. He has doodled in both of my NOTW. He remarqued my WMF and I have sketches in both of my 1st/1st Prince and Mr Whiffles. I haven't had him remarque my SROST yet though.

Yes.. I can't wait until Sub Press does a S/L. I will be all over that!

I had a nice time meeting him in SF last year - and having him sign a ton of books - for me and Becca ;)
I do have my matching princess and mr. Whiffle sub press books - as well as a Nate remarque - so I'll add those to the thread later. Plus the pairs playing cards - there are 4 decks from pat - 1 princess deck and 3 from the name of the wind. I'll photo those soon and post as well.

Wonderful! Love your collection. Are all three of those NOTW 1st/1st? They look to be in great condition.

I have two 1st/1st.. one with each cover. All three of them remarqued by Donato, doodled by Nate Taylor and Signed and lined by Pat... well signed by all three.

I have one 1st/1st of WMF remarqued by Nate and signed by Pat.

I have a 1st/1st of each princess book, both remarqued by Nate.

I have a S/L of the 2nd princess book. The 1st one was already too expensive when I missed it.

I have a 1st/1st unfettered and the ARC. Both sitting with 8-9 signatures.

I have 1st/1st Rogues signed by Pat and Abercombie.. soon to have Lynch and GRRM

I have all sorts of other Rothfuss stuffz. I have the pairs decks, the playing cards, cealdish currency, boss monster cards. I'm also going to be in a Tarot deck with Pat when it is released.

I don't have SubPress Tales book nor do I have his college survival guide. I'm pretty content with just having the 1st/1sts.

Glad to see there are Pat fans here. He really is an amazing guy and just gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. Plus I don't know of many authors who put themselves so much into charity like Pat does. Neil and Pat are my two special authors. They don't just give back and seem nice for the PR, I think they are genuine good people.

Yes, Pat posted a blog on May 1 I think, here it is (http://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/2015/05/million-dollar-milkshake-and-novelties/#respond), announcing, among other things, that they were doing his limited run of prints based on the French cover of Name of the Wind. A few hours later they were sold out. I was very happy that I follow his blog and managed to snag one that morning.

EDIT: Oh my, that Unfettered really is a lovely book.

Just managed to grab one off ebay for £150, which is about $230. Certainly cheaper than Pats 3 copies sold for on the geeks doing good page! ($750 for unfettered and unbound)
Hopefully Shawn can now adjust my unbound order to match the number

Well I think the inflated price for geeks doing good was just the charity aspect :) He also sold 2 1st/1sts for $2500 and that is way more than their market value. Oddly one of the 3 that sold is for the later edition cover.. which would be less desirable in my eyes.

Got this a while back but forgot to add it to the thread. It's the "Proof" of Unfettered, though I find that term highly dubious considering the high volume of the print run. Still pretty cool. Clothbound instead of leather and now slipcase or limitation number, but still signed by all the crew and with the original art.

Yeah, somehow Shawn sent out too many limitation pages to be signed and he didn't want to throw them away so he created these "proofs" and I believe the proceeds went to charity.

Hi! I´m fairly new to this (actually this is my first post). Loved the kingkiller chronicles and just finished "The Lightning tree" novella in Rogues and started to remember how I long for "Doors of Stone". I´ve decided I want a first edition of the books (if the price is fair). Was hoping you people could help me with a couple of questions.

I see there are several covers to "The name of the wind" and I can´t figure out which one is the "real" first edition. On wiki it says that there are two possible hardcovers printed in 2007 by DAW books: one with the face of the green man and one with the figure of Kvothe. Also there is a later printing depicting a cloaked figure. Which one of these covers are considered "the real" first edition? I also have a noob question: "S/L", it means Signed/Limited right? :p And when on earth is Subterranean going to make a lavish edition of these books?? Can´t wait.

Breeblebrox, the first edition has either Kvothe (they call this one the Fabio cover) or the Stone/Green Man.

S/L is Signed Limited. SP is supposed to be publishing the S/Ls but nothing has been announced. I'm wondering if they are waiting for Pat to finish the final book?

Aronstg
08-15-2016, 04:58 PM
Yeah what Becca said. Neither cover is considered a true 1st as they were released simultaneously. As far as the actual cover art.. the Kvothe cover was created first and after they printed out dust just jackets they decided they didn't really like it so they enlarged the background image and touched it up and created the Green Man cover. In my opinion, the Kvothe cover is more desirable but I haven't seen a major price difference between the two covers.

Also can't wait for a S/L edition but I am also in the same boat as becca that they probably want something more concrete on day 3 before the issue that. I just hope I have a heads up as I know I'd love to have a shot at a lettered.

Do any of you have special slipcases for your copies of Name of the Wind?

I was thinking of approaching Jeff to see if he could do slipcases for this. I am not much for design so I would need help with that, maybe Id see if Simon could help me with that.

Would anyone be interested in one of these slipcases if I move forward with this?

Great question. I think the design outside of just author's name would be cool - I have done a few projects with Jeff but unfortunatelly right now my time is limited. But if you have the resources then...it changes things. I do have measurements for the first two books ( and jeff has them already as well). Once I have the the first update - I will post here asap.

I think you would have to ask Jeff that. I know that the NOTW 1sts are notorious for poor production. Daw didn't really do much to make these books last. I've seen plenty that needed gluing and I even had a copy myself that needed to be glued.

I looked into what we would need to do to get some images and such on the slipcase but it is well beyond my expertise so I may just go with the generic author/title with what Jeff has.

Becca, how do you know that Subterranean Press is supposed to be producing the S/L? Just wondering. I didn't read anything about it anywhere else. Does anyone know whether the S/L by Subterranean Press will be a variant of the 10th year anniversary edition, with more color plates (like they did with Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), or whether they will be producing a different illustrated edition?

Anderida books are now taking orders for a signed and numbered 10th anniversary edition of Name of the Wind:

http://www.anderidabooks.co.uk/

from an email:

"It is becoming an autumn tradition that Gollancz releases 10th Anniversary editions of their most popular and enduring fantasy titles. As with last year we will have exclusive signed and numbered editions of these titles. Most of this years releases are the continuations of those series with the exception of one debut.

That one debut is probably one of the most popular of all fantasy releases in the last decade, Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of The Wind. We are now taking pre-orders for an exclusive signed and numbered version of this 10th anniversary edition. There will be just 400 numbered copies available and it can be pre-ordered for £25. On publication, it will be £30. This is a limited but wonderful opportunity to acquire a special, collectable version of The Name of The Wind at low cost. A US first edition will typically cost hundreds of pounds and a UK first edition is now hitting the £1K mark. "

Much criticized edition not only for the publication ( "where is our book 3" folks are pretty angry I guess) but for the cover design as well. While I'm not in a camp who think its the best cover choice - please see alternatives here https://www.theartofthenameofthewind.com/making-of/
but I loved this edition a lot, because of the work that Nate Taylor and Dan Dos Santos put in creating a new life of sorts in Kvothe's world.
My book is signed by three, and Dan Dos Santos did a little doodling on the title page and a masterpiece in the back of the book.
Now all I need is to add Nate Taylor's remarque...

The demand for the limited slipcased illustrated edition of The Name of the Wind has been huge!

We listed the first batch at 8 am London time and it sold out within minutes!

We are listing two smaller batches of the remaining available copies at 1 pm & 10 pm London time. We have chosen to list the remaining books this way to give as many as possible in different time zones around the world a fighting chance of ordering the book. We are trying to be as fair as possible in selling this book.

We are dealing with a lot of email enquiries at the moment so please be patient in waiting for a response to any enquirey you make.

We still have copies of the regular Gollancz 10th Anniversary edition of The Name of the Wind. This is a smaller format hardcover without illustrations, it is signed by Patrick Rothfuss and numbered out of 400 to a limitation page. It is listed below at £30. These will likely sell out at sometime in the near future.

UPDATE

The 1pm batch of The Name of the Wind, sold out within 1 minute!
The third and final batch will be listed at 10pm.

If you haven't already create a profile - I have ordered from them several times in the past - and then I used PayPal. It will not last more than a minute. I was up and waiting at midnight - and got my copy (only 1 per household) - and 22-25 pounds to ship - so all told about $125 US. I got an error on main page after ordering - but got email confirmation and PayPal receipt shortly after completing order - plus email confirmation from Anderidia too

The slipcased limited copies were $110.. so with the $7 shipping they were just slightly less expensive. They did have a snafu so I think many of you will be glad you didn't get in on it. They originally had it up to sell unlimited copies. I was able to get some but then I received a refund with a note that they actually only had 4 copies and those sold out right away.

I can probably find this info by randomly searching, but since I don't want spoilers (I'm only 157 pages into The Name Of The Wind, and it is going well), I will ask all of you and hope that someone knows:

Has a release date been set for book 3 (The Doors Of Stone)? If not, is there a general window (2018? 2019?) for when we should expect it?

Book 2 (The Wise Man's Fear) came out in 2011 - is PR pulling a GRRM on us?

Per https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1222526753:

Pat Rothfuss made a bet. If his charity team page raises $333,333 before he kills the Ender Dragon, he'll read a chapter from Doors of Stone

Let's hope this means that Doors of Stone is either done, close to done, or reaching meaningful critical mass in some way.

It's funny; I thought my previous post would be helpful to anyone who hadn't heard the "good" news, but...not so fast.

In a blog post written after the initial wager: https://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/2021/12/concerning-minecraft-faerie-bargains-and-an-early-peek-into-the-doors-of-stone/

…Rothfuss says:
- the initial wager was for the prologue (no chapter)
- he lost this wager but forgot about it overnight (brother, pleeeeeeease)
- he then offered fans the choice of the prologue (which they'd already won) or a new higher-stakes wager in its place with a higher donation amount required to "win," but which would add a chapter on top of the prologue, as well as some pages from a comic he’s working on.

...and then:
- the fans chose the new wager
- the fans hit the new level ("won")
- Rothfuss then (reportedly) began hemming and hawing again...

Time for a ramble:

From the 1970s through the 1980s, there was constant talk of replacing the original Boston Garden (where the Celtics and Bruins played) with a new one because it was old and sucked. Occasional "it's coming" comments from various people in/around the Bruins or city government regularly appeared in the news while the wait dragged, but the more logical among us ultimately adopted a position expressed in the simple statement "let me know when they order the steel."

My point: I don't want to hear one more word about DOS until someone orders some Goddamn steel (and what is the novel-publishing equivalent of ordering the steel - should we be watching the schedules of his editor, of a particular printing facility, or what?)

He did say that he would read the prologue before the end of the fundraiser (I don't know when the fundraiser ends...) at around 3:40:00 of this:

Rothfuss needs to sort himself out. He’s clearly having big problems finishing, either because he doesn’t have the ability to pull it all together, or because the pressure of meeting readers’ expectations is driving him to paralysis or endless rewriting. But either way, he has to find a way past this self absorbed prima donna funk he’s in and work to finish the damned thing.

Whether that’s getting off social media or writing something completely different and coming back to it later, I have no idea. Maybe it will take another five years, or 10, or never. But I’m skeptical that DOS is anywhere close to done, or that we will ever see it published unless Rothfuss does something different from what he’s doing.

Update: supposedly he'll read the prologue on Tuesday Dec 14, on which day he's also having some kind of Q&A re: book 3.

He seems to spend a lot of time interacting with the fanbase on everything but #3; if I were in his shoes, I'd want to keep a lower profile and not have to spend so much time not discussing the single thing his audience cares most about.

I feel for the guy. He went from being nobody to being one of the most successful and well-respected fantasy writers, on pretty much his first time out. He holds himself not just to his own high standards for Doors of Stone, but to his perceived fan expectations for it, which is nigh impossibly high. His lack of experience with fame, and with writing in general, has him always feeling the work is not good enough.

And I think social media has become a real trap for him - he obviously gets instant gratification and support from it, but its also a constant reminder of the very fans who expect the most from book three. You see his self-esteem swings in massive highs and lows, and he almost feels guilty about spending time with his family.

That's why I think he would do well to walk away from social media and the book for a while, and write something else. Just to prove to himself that he can write - and finish - something that he's happy with when he doesn't have the pall of book 3 looming over him. Or maybe not - maybe that's not how he works. But what he's doing now does not seem healthy or productive.

Why write when you can start an imprint?

SEATTLE, WASH., December 13, 2021—Grim Oak Press, the small press that published the award-winning anthology Unfettered, is partnering with #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Kingkiller Chronicle Patrick Rothfuss to create the new imprint, Underthing Press. https://grimoakpress.com/

Do not allow this post to raise your hopes.

[Any lies or misinformation contained herein do not originate with me; I'm merely the pipe helping to move what may well be sludge. I do so in the hope that this is the beginning of the end of our long wait.]

This is a "I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy"-type thing, except that I don't personally know anyone involved (I also have one of these for Area 51, but I digress).

Now, hold your nose, and proceed carefully:

Someone on Reddit said that someone on Quora said The Doors of Stone is "at the editor and has a release date." [These comments do exist on the respective websites; as for their veracity, I make no claim. I suppose the very existence of the Quora comment means the Reddit comment qualifies as true, but perhaps everyone involved other than me knows it is a fake and the entire chain, on both sites, is intended to wind us up - so, join me in remaining unwound.]

The "someone" on Quora has the username Mercedes Lackey. I've never heard of her, but others say (and what won't "others" say?) that the real Mercedes Lackey works with Rothfuss' editor, would therefore be in a position to know this, and isn't known for starting or spreading bullshit rumors. But as I said, I've never heard of her and know none of this to be true or false, nor do I know if this Quora user is the real Lackey (that's probably the biggest question here).

Many of you are in, or have connections to, the publishing industry; I'd be interested to know if any of you have any knowledge of Lackey, whether this was really her, etc.

The Quora comment: https://www.quora.com/Will-atheists-Christians-etc-accept-the-signs-that-we-are-living-in-a-time-when-every-evil-characteristic-in-the-world-is-rising-to-power-signaling-the-coming-of-the-tribulation-period-as-prophesized-in-the-Bible/answer/Andrew-Weill?comment_id=283192717&comment_type=2

An update to the above post, which either punctures the whole thing, or makes it a bit more intriguing:

Lackey responded to questions, not with a comment, but with a link to the Amazon link for The Slow Regard of Silent Things, the implication possibly being that she was thinking of Slow Regard as Kingkiller book 3, and while it is that in a sense, it is not being waited for by anyone as it was released almost 8 years ago.

One way to view this: there's nothing more to this than that Lackey made a simple mistake in confusing Slow Regard with Doors of Stone and we can all go back to listening for whispers in the void for DOS hints.

A 2nd way to view this: Lackey intentionally refrained from making an actual comment ("sorry for the trouble, gang - I know nothing of Doors of Stone") because she does in fact have the DOS info she previously related and didn't want to lie about that and/or doesn't want to start a new conversation surrounding the words she chooses for the denial (denial via Amazon link being the simpler denial).

I like the second one, but that may be because, well, I like the second one.
