Foxcatcher

I got lucky. :lol:

My sister got my Mom tickets to see White Christmas at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven. I tagged along to go see Foxcatcher. I've never been to that theater before and I knew that I'd better take the opportunity to see Foxcatcher just in case it doesn't open closer to me.

New Haven is a big city and they tend to get films like Foxcatcher. It's not that New Haven is very far, it's just that it's a pain in the ass to go down there. You have to pay for parking and the prices for a ticket are crazy. It cost 11 bucks to see Foxcatcher and that was a matinee. A small popcorn and a kids soda were 10 bucks.

I just like good movies, regardless of where they come from. The trailer looked fun and apparently it's the highest-grossing Indian film of all time. I posted the trailer just the other day in the trailers thread here.

They have a different style and some do not happen to like it. Their movies are too long and they dance in weird situations. (Which I quite like.) :D Still I am a Bollywood fan. I would love this movie if I wasn't. So I hope you watch it and then we can share ideas. :D

I think those glasses definitely help. I pretty much watched it because Matt has been raving about it non-stop. It was a good film, but a little slow at times and wasn't anything outstanding to me. I doubt I'll ever watch it again. I wouldn't say to rush and see it, but if you get the chance its not by any means a complete waste of time.

I have it queued up. It looks interesting and I enjoy the main players. I also look at it like the companion piece to Enemy, which is the other underrated film about a character who has a double. They are both very different films though.

I liked it, especially how it presented thoughtful cases for both science and religion, rather than picking one over the other. I do think it slowed down a bit after Sofi died in the elevator, though. I really liked her character and wished she would've stayed around a little longer.

Also, did you know that it's a prequel to a film they haven't even made yet? They wanted to make a film called "I", but it was too expensive and complicated, so they made I Origins as an origin story before the events of "I". I just found that out yesterday.

Interesting. What's the status of that? It's not like this film made any money or anything.

Pretty sure the script is done, but I don't see it getting made. I think Origins only made about $400,000. Sound of My Voice was supposed to be the first in a trilogy, but that never seemed to get off the ground either.

I guess my main question is what did Shasta have to do with it? Was she just concerned about her boyfriend, and these other things just randomly all tied together? But she did know about the Golden Fang? So what was the deal with her boyfriend, was that storyline about him getting put into an institution completely separate, because nothing really came of it once we found out where he was?

If you blind yourself and try hard not to see plot holes you can enjoy it Ricky. Acting is really good like Mike said.

Probably not a full review, I'll have a mini paragraph review shortly. You should definitely see it. It's really well done and Cumberbatch is fantastic. Keira Knightley is also very good.

There's a huge aspect to the story that is vaguely hinted at in the trailer. I think a lot of people who are unfamiliar with Turing's story were probably caught off guard. That aspect of the film packs an emotional wallop.

Especially when they are sailing away. Not a bad movie, but not one of Anderson's best either.

This weekend, I'm catching The Imitation Game, American Sniper, and Boyhood.

Will just need Whiplash and Birdman under my belt.

I enjoyed American Sniper. It's not better than Hurt Locker, but it's pretty intense. I viewed it as a movie, blocking out all the extra stuff that has come out recently. The supporting cast outside of Sienna Miller is faceless and nameless and they really do build up Kyle as the savior of the war. He's portrayed as the most heroic and most competent of the soldiers we see.

The film is one-sided, but that doesn't bother me. We are seeing the war from Kyle's eyes, through his scope if you will. This is how many of the soldiers viewed the people they were fighting against, and in some cases, the people they were there to liberate. Eastwood has shown the other side of the enemy in Letters From Iwo Jima, so I take offense to the people who are knocking him for being an overly patriotic old fart.

I just need to see Selma and I've seen all of the films nominated for Best Picture.

It's funny. I went into The Hurt Locker thinking I wouldn't like it, and went into Zero Dark Thirty thinking I'd love it. It was the opposite for both films.

Wow. You're ahead of the game. I haven't seen any yet (though I've seen some of the "second tier" nominees like Wild, Gone Girl, Foxcatcher, etc.). :lol:

I don't know a lot about Green Inferno aside from the fact that it's directed by Eli Roth. I remember hearing something about it a while back, but lost track of it. I decided to look it up and I found this quote from Eli Roth. I guess the film has been in the middle of distribution problems. Roth has been a pretty reliable director for studios, so I'm sure this film will make it to theaters at some point.


As of right now, all systems are go for the theatrical release. Here's the thing: everyone is working to resolve it. Open Road has been amazing through this entire process. I really love them, they've been great. Even with whatever situation World View is going through, everyone is working together to find the best, cleanest, most positive resolution and get the film out in the widest release possible. I think realistically it would be in the August to September range. We wanted to have an announcement at Sundance. Trust me, I check in with the lawyers every day. Everyone is working to resolve it as soon as possible and we have hope to have an announcement within the next couple of weeks for the definite theatrical plan for the film. Everyone's been so supportive. It's almost been like "Save ‘The Green Inferno,'" in the same way that the students in the film want to save the Amazon.

Matt, I've only seen Hostel, to be honest. I do think Knock knock looks good. As for Bay, I know he gets a lot of hate (from me included) but he's made some pretty enjoyable movies. Especially early in his career. I enjoyed Bad Boys, Armageddon and The Rock as a teen. And I actually think The Island is somewhat underrated.

I thought Z for Zacariah was good but not great. The acting was good in it and margot did an awesome job. The survival themes of the film reminded me of the walking dead (sans zombies) and I wondered if the filmmakers were trying to recreate the appeal of that series. Id suggest giving it a watch when you get a chance but it doesnt make my top 5. It is supposedly based on a book but I havent read it.

The Witch was a great attempt by a first time director but it fell just shy of being really great for me. I liked many aspects of the film but felt that the cohesiveness of the interrelated storylines just didnt gel completely. It was like the guy was making two films ( a historical period piece and a horror film) and mashed them together.

There are a lot of great things about the movie that are really noteworthy and well done and I am certain the director is meant for bigger and better things. First of all the film is beautifully shot. I had impressions of like a Terrance Malick style art film with the use of natural settings. Also it is impeccably researched. The production design is fantastic and the historical research was done.

I feel like the director would have been better off to concentrate on making more of a Horror movie (since the work he did towards that was very creepy). The snippets of the supernatural elements are sparse and very jump cut scarey and hallucinatory in imagery (although i guess that distribution of the "scary" stuff helps build the suspense).

I am pretty certain most who comment on these threads will eventually see this one and probably like at least elements of the film.

I thought it was cool that there were tow Game of Thrones actors in the movie. The male lead plays a member of the Ironborn in GoT and the mother is Lysa Arryn.

The girl who was cast as the eldest daughter (and the one accused of witchcraft) Anya Taylor-Joy is most probably on her way to larger stardom though this role. She was really good and has a great look and will be working on larger projects soon, i'm guessing

Eli Roth is an acquired taste and this film was a little over the top for me. Worth a watch to form your own opinion though.

Anyone use Google Chrome? I just started using it but using say ctrl+B isn't changing my text to bold like it does on IE. What setting do I change?

At least when it comes to forums ctrl+ functions still work on IE lol. It's way easier than typing inside tags, especially when copying the movie list and having to remove them. Highlighting and ctrl+b is way easier. I just used what was on my laptop. For as much web surfing as I do (virtually none) IE suited me fine, but it bogs down on youtube and got sick of it lol

I've never had that message and I've used Chrome for years. Actually, I've never really had any problems with Chrome.

It's on the right side of the address bar, next to the bookmark star if a pop up is being blocked, little square window looking thingy. Putting the cursor on it it says it blocked pop up windows yet it only shows up when pop ups show up. I've looked everywhere in the settings and have found out how to modify it yet or what.

I kind of feel the same way. I was enjoying it at first, but was a little disappointed by the end. It had a couple good scares, though, and Sarah Snook as Jessabelle was the best part of the movie.

Ehh, could have been a lot better, but it wasn't a complete waste of time. Although I kind of guessed that considering it went straight to DVD. What'd you think?

I kind of feel the same way. I was enjoying it at first, but was a little disappointed by the end. It had a couple good scares, though, and Sarah Snook as Jessabelle was the best part of the movie.

I just saw Sarah Snook in Predestination. She was fantastic. An actress to keep any eye on.

Europa Report - Skip this one. For some reason it had high ratings on netflix, and the story sounded good, and it could have been except for the fact that it failed to create any sort of tension at all.


Europa Report was terrible. I was so disappointed. The trailer looked so cool, you're so right about the lack of tension. Honestly, they failed to build pretty much anything in that film. A waste of potential.

I love how funny Rec 3 is. It had fun with so many tropes. The knight armour is hilarious...guy literally dons a shining armour to go rescue the damsel in distress lol. Using the chainsaw to cut the wedding dress, becoming the 'sexy survivor' haha. The ending was completely awesome, too. I've seen Rec 3 more than the rest of the series combined, I think. I wanted to see Rec 4 at TIFF but would have cost me 45 bucks :/

What did you think of American Sniper, Rick?

I really, really liked it. I think they could have handled the cohesiveness of the search for the Big Bad a little better, but overall the film was tense, well-paced, and Bradley Cooper nailed it. It was my second favorite BP nom (behind Whiplash).

Oh, I loved Stake Land, what'd you think of it?

Definitely one of the better horror films. It reminded me a lot of 28 Days Later. The action was sparse but intense with a strong emphasis on character and atmosphere.

That's what I was thinking when I saw it too. I always describe it as an apocalyptic vampire film. It was a refreshing take on something that we're so used to seeing.

Is it as bad as they say Ricky?

Well, I really liked it at the beginning. It had a nice build-up with focusing on the characters and a lack of jump scares, but the slow pace kind of stays for the whole film and makes it feel a bit boring. The second half seems more complicated then it should be. I went online after I watched it and read that they pretty much re-shot most of the second half at the studio's request, so I guess that's why it feels disjointed.

Overall it was good for a Saturday night movie, but I wouldn't rush out to see it. (Olivia Cooke is great though.)

I felt the same way. One of those movies where you're disappointed at what it could've been, not necessarily because it was bad.

I thought it was pretty fascinating. I'd recommend it. It's really crazy everything that goes on there. They interviewed a lot of long time scientologists, that have since left, and what they had to go through when they were in it and how they've been treated since they left. How people get sucked into it, I'll never understand.
