The 2015 Fundraiser benefiting The Haven Foundation kicks off January 1st and will run through May 19, 2015.
Last year we raised $13,900! Our goal this year is $15,000.

From Stephen King:
"In the summer of 1999, I was struck by a careless driver and nearly killed while taking my daily walk. It was ten months before I was able to work productively again. Some years later, a good friend of mine, audio reader Frank Muller, suffered terrible head injuries as a result of a motorcycle accident. He never worked again. My luck was infinitely better than Muller’s, but the two events set me thinking about the uniquely perilous situation of many freelance artists. The majority of mid-list writers, audio readers, and freelancers in the book and publishing industry have little or no financial cushion in the event of a sudden catastrophic accident such as that suffered by Muller and myself. Many aren’t affiliated with any professional associations or guilds that can help them in the event of such reversals. Even those who are affiliated with organizations such as The Authors’ Guild cannot look for much beyond token help over a short period of time.
My response to this has been the creation of The Haven Foundation. Its goals will be threefold:
First, to establish a compassionate and committed group of board members willing to sift through cases and identify those where the need seems to be the greatest. These “greatest need” cases would be freelance members of the fine arts community – who have found themselves unable to work due to disease or accident. We will also focus on freelancers who lost their homes and work spaces (with freelancers these are often the same) as a result of natural disasters or other catastrophic events.
Second, to help a number of these individuals each year, based on need.
Third, to establish cut-off points for such help. As I have discovered, the decision to cut off aid is an agonizing one, and best made by a group rather than by an individual. I have come to believe, however, that it must be made if help is to be rendered to the many rather than the few.
Stephen King"

At the top of every page is a donation widget. Keep in mind that $10 gets you an entry for the grand prize. $100 total gets the max 10 entries.
Last year there were less than 100 unique donors and less than 420 total entries.
Pretty good odds considering the prizes.

We are streamlining this year’s event to make it easier to manage and hopefully increase the donation total.
Several book dealers have already committed to donating things that will either be used as giveaways, or auctioned off-we are hoping for more once this official announcement is posted.

100% of the net proceeds from all cash, check, Paypal gift donations and Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/) auctions will be forwarded to The Haven Foundation. (Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/) ad insertion, commission, shipping fees and shipping materials are the expenses that will be paid from the Gross proceeds).

Every person who donates $10 or more, or donates an item used for auction or giveaway (donors need to contact me in advance before sending potential items) will receive one entry into our giveaway*-maximum 10 entries per donor. Items for the giveaway have yet to be finalized, but rest assured they will be really exciting and cool! Please use the donation "widget" that is atop each forum page.

Stephen King has kindly agreed to personalize one of his books to our Grand Prize Winner!**

Personal Paypal donations must be noted as a “Gift” so that Paypal does not take a commission.
The Paypal address is Crownandcola@aol.com (Name is Dolores, don't freak out)

Checks must be made out to Jerome Smith (Please don’t make them out to The Haven Foundation as I will have to forward them and they won’t count towards our fund-raising total) and mailed to:

Jerome, tried to PM you but it bounced back.

Messages below:

(12/10/14)

Update: I received the second payment and went ahead and put the book in the mail today to Jerome. Media mail w/ $150 insurance. So if the box shows up waterlogged or full of potatoes instead of a book, let me know!

Dave

(1/16/15)

Hey Jerome, I assume the book arrived? I sent it 4-5 weeks ago. Just making sure. No potatoes, right?

Thanks,
Dave

We have quite a few things coming up for auction. One very cool item is an original drawing by Jae Lee. This is a very nice sized piece.

Ordinarilly we wouldn't attempt something like this, but McVey had the book for quite some time and after the trials and tribulations of doing the art, and such, the book DJ and cover were damage beyond repair.
I'm am in awe of the binders ability to remove the cover, yet still keep the two page FFE intact.
He literally stripped the HC binding off, and bound it with no damage to the end-pages.

The book is outstanding!!! Amazing what a professional binder can do. Lots of love and craftsmanship went into this edition. You're getting to be quite the "Re-Binder", Jerome!!! Anxious to see the finished piece.

I personally asked Chadbourne to do a piece that indicated a biohazard, and had a "Captain Trips" graffiti.
Knowing the "saturation" of Glenn's art, the hope was that this piece would be subtly but noticeably different from other Chadbourne remarques,

Good job. Simple yet, still powerful. He hit it out of the park on that piece.

Separate artwork is inside the lid. There is one more piece in the back of the book.

This is one fine collaborative piece, as the Haven Fund has been known to produce. Big shout outs to, RF, Alex McVey. Glenn Chadbourne (with one of his more inspired pieces) and of course, the amazing, "Dolso" (Dick Olson) for the case!!! A truly one of a kind item that any collector should be proud to own!!!

If you beg profusely, RF may divulge the firm that did the re-binding, but I doubt it!!! LOL Never the less, they did a marvelous job!!!

Well if last year in any indication.. a color remarqued Duma Key signed by King sold for $1200+ and the B&W Desperation signed by King sold for $800+. So I think that it is very reasonable that each these would pull in at least $800-$1000 range. This is based off of last years prices of course.

This is going to be a crazy finish. Soon to be posted for auction:

Brand new in box-16gb space grey iPad Air 2 for the auction, retail is $499 (Not King related, but donated by Tomas from http://www.stephenkingcollector.com/)
First American edition/Author's Edition of Men & Women by Robert Browning, published in Boston in 1856 (inspiration for King-"Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came")
Ned Dameron original art in Grant Gift Edition of Black House-Talisman. Not sure if it's once piece, two, or more. Details to follow.
Duma Key Trade 1st Hardback with Maitz original painting inside-Signed by Stephen King.

We hope to make our $15K goal. It's going to be a near impossible feat, but as the old saying goes-"If it's difficult, we'll have it done in an hour; if it's impossible, we'll have it done tomorrow morning".

Stay tuned...

The post speaks for itself. Please see post #1 of this thread for Grand Prize info. In addition to the Grand Prize, we will give away other cool items to donors.
I am donating a paperback copy of "The Stand", that was signed by King at the recent Brooklyn event as one of the prizes. So far none of the other prizes are signed by Stephen King, but who knows.

This is finally my year to win the Grand Prize!!!

:Ball Kick:

I sincerely hope you do, my friend! I can't think of anybody more deserving to win the Grand Prize this year!!!

Not only has Bill undertaken Herculean efforts to ensure our Haven Foundation Fundraiser achieves the "impossible" goal of $15,000 this year, but he has continuously done so during each fundraiser for the past seven years. IMHO This level of heroic dedication and commitment deserves proper recognition.

Although the prize draw cannot be rigged to allow Bill to win, I would like to help tip the scales of probability in Bill's favour.

Therefore, in order to help enhance Bill's chances of winning, I would like to donate all 10 of my entries within the Grand Prize Draw to Bill. Can I please ask that if my name is randomly selected as the Grand Prize winner this year, that the prize is actually given to Bill instead?

Whoa, guys!!! I was just doing my traditional prediction joke. I appreciate the gesture and it makes me feel great, but I takes my chances just like everyone else. Besides there are an awful lot of folks that contribute to make this a success each year. I'm just the guy with the target on his back. A whole heck of a lot of you folks put in great effort to make this a success each year.

Merlin1958
05-16-2015, 12:40 PM
For the record, if anyone deserves an honor & recognition like this it is, Jerome. I may get a lot of the "Bling" for my efforts on behalf of the Haven Fund, but NO ONE does as much to make this happen each year as he does. Jerome, keeps the accounting, posts the auctions, packages & ships the books, posts the auction threads, deals/coordinates with me, helps in the solicitation of donors, stores the donated items, updates the progress on the site and probably 25 other things I have not listed here. And he is not even eligible to be included in the drawing!!!

So, as much as I appreciate the gesture on your part (and I really appreciate it!!), I would like to dedicate my ten entries on his behalf. If, I do win it will be dedicated to "Jerome, from the Haven Fund Whore"!!! I appreciate my title and the fact that for 5 months of the year I am sort of a "Staff Member". I also take a lot of pride in my place on "The Wall". That is more than enough for me.

RF - Thinking about odds... Do you have counts on how many have contributed, and how many total entries there will be for the grand prize?

Yes. The donation period ends 5/19/2015 at 21:00 PDT (0400 GMT on 5/20/2015).

does the current total include the last auction still in progress? if not, then we have not just reached the goal - we smashed it!
It does not include that.

Also, very important, because of late delivery, we have three more unique items left to auction,
The donation period ends tomorrow at 9PM PDT, however the auctions will extend to ~5/25/2015.

Very cool!!! Not saying it should even be considered for this year, but it has been fortunate that a new winner was chosen in each of the last 4 years. Perhaps, for future drawings, we should consider exempting the previous 1 or two years winners? Just throwing it out there. I know they made their donations the same as all, but IDK. What do you folks think? Leave it alone it ain't broke yet?

Unofficial, but likely the prizes (in addition to the Grand Prize). FYI, The paperback "The Stand" was signed by King at the recent Brooklyn event. I would have donated a trade PB 1st Mr. Mercedes but it was grabbed by "The Claw". Thank that person when you meet them.

I think that past winners should be eligible. It's a relatively small active community, and as long as the drawing remains a "blind" drawing, I wouldn't want to discourage past winners from participating by having them be ineligible.

Currently past winners can win the GP.
Had Ari_Racing won 2 or 3 years in a row; we'd probably adjust the rules.

If you win one of the prizes above (Finders Keepers broadside, signed Stand, etc.), are you still eligible for the grand prize, or does that use up your entry?

divemaster
05-18-2015, 06:04 PM
Wait. Now I'm confused. I won a prize 2 (3?) years ago. Does that mean I'm not eligible for any prize other than the GP?

I'm not complaining; just trying to confirm what the rule is.

Randall Flagg

I draw the winners for everything but the Grand Prize.
A person can only win one of the lesser prizes; but they are still eligible for the grand prize.
If a person has 1..2...10 entries that number is not lowered by winning one lesser prize.

I have never won the GP, but had Ari (or any person) won three years in a row, I would be in favor of keeping things as they are.

If a member wins multiple times, my opinion is, so be it.

If I drew the winner and Bill won 3 years in a row, people would bitch.
At the Sarasota event, Ari won 3 or 4, perhaps 5 in a row. After the second one, there was a collective groan as he (fairly) won two more.

BTW, less than 24 hours to get in a donation.
Read the rules, but last year (and this year), the odds are much better than a 1/100,000 corporate drawing.
The last four winners are highly regarded members of the board; and everyone who participated was happy for them.

They are 5 day auctions, so that we can wrap this up by 5/26/2015.

The donation period ended 5/19/2015.

I'm working on the accounting to create the tickets for the drawing.

Info on drawing to come soon.

How much money did we raise this year so far???????
$16,001. Just like the header says.
We have 3 auctions that haven't ended yet, and thus their totals are not included.
Also not included (deducted) are the shipping expenses for the 8 prizes (and the Grand Prize to and from King's office.)
