I'm finally getting the collection thread started. Thanks biomieg and Webstar1000 for giving me the push I needed!

I'll say up front that my collection doesn't compare to some of the outstanding collections I have seen up here, but hopefully you will enjoy seeing some of the items. It's made up mostly of the usual suspects...

I'll kick things off with a shot of what represents the bulk of the books. I will do some close up pictures and also spotlight specific items that have some sort of story. Anyway, enjoy! :)

Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate it!

racerx45, yes if you're referring to the middle bookcase, 3rd shelf from the bottom, last item on the right, that's the S/L The Stand.

I'll get some close up pics added soon and will keep things going as there's a lot to photograph.

Thanks again!

Yeah, the "I Spy" can be fun. Every time I see someone post a picture of books on shelves, I always find myself looking over every book, and identifying them. I think we know these books so well, even if you can't read the spine, just seeing the color of it, we know what it is.

I'll post up some more images soon.

I think what I'll do for this next round is focus on the 1st Trade editions as that was my focus when I first started collecting. Then after that, it might be a good idea to spotlight certain individual books.

Here's some close up's of individual shelves from the 1st bookcase, which is basically all 1st Trade editions including everything from Carrie to Mr. Mercedes.

As far as I can tell, this is a complete collection of US and UK 1st editions. I know there's various opinions (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?18785-How-do-you-define-your-COMPLETE-collection-of-1sts) as to what constitutes a "Complete" 1st/1st collection.

I think I have it pretty much covered, but if you see something missing let me know. The only one I know is missing is the UK Danse Macabre which I still need to purchase at some point.

I should also figure out how to do better quality shots as they always tend to come out a little grainy, and there's the glare from the Brodart's to deal with too. I guess these aren't too bad.

Enjoy.

Variants

Although not in the same bookcase, this is a separate shelf of all the variants I have, and a few miscellaneous books.

The UK TEOTD is just a duplicate copy and so is The Shining UK. The Mr. Mercedes is an advance copy, basically just the 1st Trade, but with a letter.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/photo_zpsa41eed81.jpg

From what I know, I'm missing these variants:

1st State Salem's (no surprise there)
3rd State Salem's
EOTD (One of the printer variants, I have 2)
Under the Dome (Grey lettering)
Nightmares & Dreamscapes UK (£16.99 price)
The Stand Uncut UK (£16.95 price)

A few more that fall within the 1st's category and a couple other items, and of course the Bachman's.

There are also a couple of US Rose Madder DJ variants, although I think they're all proof DJs with blank inner DJ flaps so I don't know if you want to count those. I have one of them (the most 'common' one), Bob has a couple of other variations. And there's a UK From a Buick 8 variant that has the same cover art as the proof. Bob owns a copy and I know a UK-based collector who has one but have never heard of another copy. And there is a UK Lisey's Story variant that looks completely different (also a proof DJ I guess).

I also like the look of the US and UK trades and I'm sort of sad that I let go of my complete collection of UK 1sts, but at least I still own copies of the Big Five plus Dead Zone and Danse Macabre!

Is your copy of the UK 'Salem's Lot price-clipped? I'm not sure why but most of them seem to be.

Sorry to turn your collection thread into a variant DJ thread but I just found a variant DJ for The Dark Half UK in my collection. You have to look very close to see the differences. The Whole DJ is printed slightly lighter and there is more detail visible as a result on the front of the cover. The main difference is the second line of the first paragraph of the blurb being slightly different. The Proof DJ is the one on the left.

I think the original UK DJ that was used on the proof is miles better looking than the eventual 1st DJ. Never seen the alternate Lisey's Story.

Michaël thanks for reminding me of the FAB8 UK cover variant. I did know about that one and forgot. I didn't know about different US Rose Madder covers or the UK Lisey's Story. If you want, post a picture here of the Rose Madder one you have, I don't mind.

You can go nuts with all these variants. I'm kind of okay with what I have right now and possibly acquiring the other ones that aren't super rare over time.

For reference, here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?9403-Book-Collection-ur2ndbiggestfan&p=726500&viewfull=1#post726500) is the FAB8 'proof' style cover.

I hear you... I guess we all have some sort of regret over selling books in years past. It's part of being a collector I suppose.

To answer your question, I checked my copy of the UK 'Salem's Lot and the jacket is not price clipped. Here's a quick shot of it. When I get to post about that edition specifically I'll add more pics.

No worries, it's totally fine... makes for an interesting discussion... I didn't know about any variant jackets for UK Dark Half... if you hadn't pointed this out, I would never have noticed. In fact, I'm looking real hard at the two and can't see much of a difference. I guess it's very subtle like you say... are you sure this is a variant and not just a normal difference in printing the jackets? Maybe it's just hard to see in the photographs...

This is the one that started it all for me... The first Stephen King book I bought, back when it was released in 1987. It's the UK edition because in South Africa, where I'm from originally, we'd get the UK editions.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/photo-1_zps29d55277.jpg

Not knowing what I was doing, I covered it in plastic and stuck it down on the inside with tape. Although the tape was on the plastic, the resin still marked the inside as you can see here:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/photo-2_zpsdec473eb.jpg

Although I've since acquired another copy, this particular one has the most sentimental value for me, because it's the actual book I purchased, and it's what ignited my interest in collecting and reading King.

It was also the catalyst for a chain of events that ended in me opening a specialty bookstore selling SF, fantasy, horror and comic books. It was the best time of my life, and I often wonder if things would have turned out that way had I not walked into a bookstore and discovered this book. Hard to believe that was all over 25 years ago now.

I've always had this dream of getting a personalized inscription and signature in this book, but that hasn't happened yet!

Earlier this year, I figured I ought to give the book some special treatment, so I had this custom Dolso case made.

Next up I'll spotlight the 1st editions of Carrie, and throw in a quick little background story for each.

UK edition first:

So this edition I bought many years ago from a 2nd hand book dealer back in South Africa. I don't think I paid more than about $30 at the time.

It's in decent shape but has the previous owners name written inside, and some tape marks to the inside boards. Otherwise, the jacket and book are in pretty good condition (in the words of an amateur book grader!)

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/carrieuk2_zps414f7b41.jpg

US Edition:

This one is in really great shape. You can't even open it fully because the binding is so tight. It's clear that it was never read.

This was around the late 80s, and back then, there were no specialty dealers where I lived so I had to find some in the USA. I don't even remember how I found them, but one was Roy A. Squires, from whom I bought this edition. I'm sure some of you must remember him? I found this information (http://www.argentleaf.com/blog/science-fiction-fantasy-history/roy-squires/) online.

Surprisingly I kept the original catalog listing the Carrie which I bought, and I've added images below. It was $250 at the time, and that was a mountain of cash for me back then. I think my parents helped me out with it.

As a quick follow up to the Carrie 1sts, here's some earlier paperback editions.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/carriepb2_zps8de32907.jpg

Basically 1st US, 1st UK, 2 US movie tie-in editions, and the UK movie tie-in I believe.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/carriepb_zps72e38d92.jpg

And one quick trip down memory lane again. I had acquired a bunch of the early 1st paperback editions (Carrie included) from Craig Goden's Time Tunnel. I'm sure those who have been around collecting for a while will remember him. He was always so courteous to me and seemed like a great guy. This was in the early 90s.

This is the only catalog I still have:

Thanks for the comments!

Keeping this collection thread updated is almost like a full time job!

I figure I'll include images of the rest of the early Doubleday/NEL books. In building my collection of 1sts, condition has been a priority, and I'd say the majority of the 1st editions I have are all in pretty amazing shape. I'd say from near-fine to fine condition. Many were bought new and never read. Of course, the exceptions are some of these early ones.

Starting with 'Salem's Lot. Both could use an upgrade, but I wanted to at least have the books in the collection for now, and possibly upgrade later.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_1795_zps25b6b373.jpg

Next, The Shining. The UK edition is already upgraded from the copy I had previously, so it's not in bad shape really. The US is also pretty good.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_1798_zpsbb359488.jpg

The best one in terms of condition is the UK Night Shift. When I first saw it, offered to me by a local book dealer, I though it was some sort of mistake. It looks like a brand new book. Jacket is fine and the book itself looks brand new.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_1799_zps9d234134.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_1802_zps76fb28b0.jpg

Probably the one that is in the worst shape is the UK Stand. It was one of the last books I needed to get the collection "complete", and one popped up on eBay earlier in the year. It looks like it just came out of an apocalypse, but hey, I have a copy. Will possibly upgrade later.

Great stuff! I don't think the US 'Salem's Lot looks too shabby actually, there aren't many copies out there that still look as new. Same goes for the UK The Stand. I owned four copies of that particular book and none of them was in particularly great shape. I think both books suffer from the materials that were used for the DJ. They seem to get damaged much more easily than most other books.

That UK Night Shift is simply lovely.

I owned four copies of that particular book and none of them was in particularly great shape. I think both books suffer from the materials that were used for the DJ. They seem to get damaged much more easily than most other books.

That UK Night Shift is simply lovely.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought of that... I have seen copies of both in slightly better shape than the ones I have, but you're right in that I haven't seen any as good as say that UK Night Shift. I'm sure there a few great copies out there in some folk's collections.

I thought about doing a restore on The Stand jacket, but never went through with it. I would never have considered it until I saw a book with a restored jacket and it was pretty amazing... I would imagine there's a number of opinions about whether to have a book professionally restored or not.

Wow guys, thanks for all the comments!!! Made my day for sure!

And please don't worry about "hijacking" the thread. It's all good stuff.

Michaël, yes I will post more pics... Just trying to find the time! My last post was only 2 days ago! But yes, I love doing this, and actually have a question for you in response to your comment about posting more pics...

Since populating a collection thread is a relatively new "passtime" for me, what guidance can you offer? What I mean is, when you say post more book pics, my main though has been, well, do I photograph all of my 1st editions? I mean, everyone has seen these books many times before. Or are you saying maybe just post some of the more limited and unique items? It's been a little overwhelming as to what to photograph and post.

Yeah, I know I over analyze too much... but let me know what you think...

Again, thanks guys. Been a real treat sharing my collection and seeing yours as well.

No, I don't mind... Unfortunately I paid top dollar for it. Just over $2K. It was an impulse buy and I had a good word with myself afterwards about not doing that again unless I want to end up broke! And yeah, although it's not an 'official' release or signed, for me the attraction was threefold: The production quality, the scarcity and the back story.

Thanks... Honestly, I don't know why. Usually when I get a book that has shrink wrap, I can't seem to bring myself to remove it. I have on a few occasions, but generally I don't. I've heard conflicting opinions about whether it's bad to wrap a book in plastic or not... Something about how the book needs to "breathe"... Aside from that, I get how you'd want to remove the wrapping, so you can see the book inside....

But yeah, I don't know...

I thought the corrected one was considered a second printing - does it still have all the other 1st edition markers ie States "First Edition" and Y38 on page 374?

The only difference between the two is the dust jacket. Both books have all the first edition markers. The 1982 dj is considered the first state.

Thanks, I appreciate that. As I was building this I was very particular about condition. I've also upgraded about 16 titles where I obtained copies that were in much better shape than the ones I had before.

The only ones I'd look at upgrading in the future would be The Stand UK and 'Salem's Lot UK. Maybe one or two others scattered around...

The next thing I want to do is get slipcases for all of them...

Yeah, no worries... and thanks so much for your comments... It really means a lot to me. I mean being able to share this with folks who appreciate it. Collecting has been quite a solitary endeavor, which I'm sure other collectors can relate to. So having an opportunity to share and discuss is a treat.

I'll keep posting close ups of the rest of the 1sts. I'm just going shelf by shelf and breaking it up with other things in between to keep it interesting. Thanks again!

And another thing Zelig, your right, it is a solitary endeavor for the most part until you pop on here. My wife likes the stories of when I track down a book for that good deal or get original art etc. How fun would it be to have all the King collectors in the same city and we could all go around and drool over each others stuff. lol

Just a quick little something completely different here. For me, before Stephen King, there was Roald Dahl. I discovered him around my early teens, and read pretty much everything available.

Although most of the books were technically children's books, I still loved them. Then at some point I wrote to him and it was back in the days when authors would send a personal note, or even sign a book if you sent one. I believe Stephen King used to do this too in the early days.

Anyway, here's a paperback I sent him and he signed it and shipped it back to me.

And here's the letter.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/Scan-Nov-20-2014-1_24-PM_zps569a89ca.jpg

If you're interested in a great biography of Roald Dahl, I read this one (http://www.amazon.com/Storyteller-Authorized-Biography-Roald-Dahl/dp/1439189765/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1416526009&sr=1-2-fkmr0&keywords=storyteller+roalh+dahl) a few months back and I thought it was fantastic.

Yeah I loved his books. 1st editions of many of the key Dahl books are way up there in price. Several thousand for a book from what I've seen. If I had really deep pockets, I'd be collecting those too...but I just have a few paperbacks...

Thanks for your comment Bob. Yes, I guess it must have. The funny thing is, I didn't keep a copy of the letter I wrote, and I don't even remember what I said in it. It's a small miracle that the reply letter from him survived over the years, as there was a period of time where I was moving around a lot. I re-discovered it about 2 years ago in a box in the garage.

On a related note, one of his letters became famous for a time. The Dream in a Bottle letter. If you're interested you can read about it here (http://www.lettersofnote.com/2011/08/thank-you-for-dream.html) or here (http://www.npr.org/2014/10/15/356451175/roald-dahl-a-bottle-of-dreams-and-a-letter-of-note). Listen to the NPR interview with the author of the letter. Very touching.

Amazing how more variants keep showing up... I didn't know about this one either. I checked what I have, and it's the red one.

Not sure if there's a thread on this topic, but here's a list I made of the variant states that I know of, based on information I've seen on various forum posts.

I've excluded limited editions, proofs and reprints. It's variants of 1st Trade editions, also includes proof DJ's. I'm sure it's by no means complete and certainly open to correction.

I also hunted down some forum posts with more information and included links to the ones I could find.

That's great! I may need the contact info for your cousin at some point! I've been looking for a paperback only type bookcase for a while... So how will that work? I mean, when you say you will display them with the covers showing? Sort of like how comics are displayed in a comic shop?

How far does your cousin travel Alan? I need me a carpenter to make a built-in bookcase!

Zelig, slightly off topic here, but do you struggle with a small bit of white from the Brodart showing above the top of the dust jacket? I can eliminate it if I'm being supremely anal retentive, but it's always a fight to get the dust jacket to seat perfectly.

Yeah, that part can be a challenge. I used to have an issue with it, but I tell ya, I've conquered that particular problem. It's really just a matter of spending extra time pushing the jacket right up against the top fold. I do one side first, then put a book on top of it, then do the other.

Sometimes, when you do the other side, it pushes the one you just did down. So it takes a little patience (which I don't have much of these days). It's hard to describe what exactly I do, but it's really just pushing the jacket up carefully and spending that extra bit of time on it. After a while I found I got quicker at it, so it's also just practice.

I don't know which version of the Brodart's you use, but I order the "Brodart Just-A-Fold® III Archival Book Jacket Covers."

Hope this makes sense.

Sounds much like my process, I haven't tossed a book on one corner to keep it still while I do the other, but I patiently push each corner in and then correct them if they come out.

I don't recall which jackets I use, but they are the type with many built in perforated fold lines, and you just fold up to whichever fits for that dust jacket. I bought a big box of mixed sizes a while ago and I've yet to run out. The popular (common) sizes and almost gone however.

Yeah, sounds like the same ones I use. I always keep a stock of Brodart covers. I just love the way they make the books look.

Regarding the JH interview.... ask and you shall receive! I found it and took some photos. Hopefully you can read it.

This has not seen the light of day for over 20 years. It's basically an exact transcript from the phone interview I did and then published in March 1993 in the store newsletter.

Simon, I believe you're interested in slipcases/traycases currently. You might like this one. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think I got this from Camelot Books. It was my understanding they produced only 2 of them and it was for their copy of the Carrie ARC. They kept one and sold this other one.

All I need now is the ARC to go inside!

Nope... it's just slightly too small for it. You could squeeze it in, but would likely damage the book, and even if you go it seated, it won't close. It was designed specifically for the ARC. I will have to get one of those some day!

If you look at this post (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?18803-Book-Collection-zelig&p=886599&viewfull=1#post886599), and scroll down to the photos of the back of the DJ, look 8 lines down from the top. One says "...at the bookstore" and the other says "...at Barnes & Noble".

Aha! I didn't see that Thanks! I assume the REVIVALs at B&N have the Barnes & Noble line then? I'll have to make a road trip. Thanks.

Yes, B&N has the Barnes & Noble DJ. But check, because when I went to the one near me, they also had the "bookstore" DJ as well on some of the books.

And when I went the B&N near me looking for the bookstore one, all they had were the Barnes & Noble ones.

I have the book store variant, so I sent to the Barnes & Noble website for one (they sent me a 25% off coupon so I took a chance). We will see. The only other edition I have is the Large Print, and hopefully will get the Australian paperback from James. Sadly, I can not at this time afford proofs like I used to.

Sounds good. Hopefully you get the B&N one. You should since you ordered it from them. I decided not to get the Australian paperback. Maybe I still will if there's any available... not sure...

Thanks. I must say, I never really got on the Remarque bandwagon as it all seemed to happen at a time when I had taken a hiatus from collecting. So I kind of missed the boat...there's so many out there...that's why I really don't have that many in my collection, but I do like this one...

I've really been out of the loop lately. I know JOYLAND had the '#1 New York Times Best Seller' variant cover, but were there any special covers or jackets or anything at all for MR. MERCEDES I missed out on?

None that I know of, Steve. The Joyland with the "#1 NYT Best Seller" is the second (and later) printing--it's not really a variant. It also has a couple corrections in the text of the story, too.

Thank you Meagan J. And Bill's right, it's starts with one book. Mine started with The Eyes of the Dragon. Only trick along the way is to not go broke or get into too much debt over buying books! Oh, and good one Bill about Jerome and Bob.

As a stay-at-home mom with 2 little kids my book budget is pretty tight. I have a blast finding trade hardcover first editions at thrift stores and garage sales though. What a rush to find something new for $1. :) I think the most I've spent on a book was when I bought a hardcover In Mint Condition 2013. But I enjoy drooling over other people's collections so keep the pics coming please! :D

You bet... I certainly will... and nothing wrong with building your collection slowly on a small budget... you never know, maybe you'll even find a real gem at one of those garage sales!

No doubt! I was at the thrift store last week and I found first trades of: Duma Key, Everything's Eventual, Blaze and The Stand uncut and I mentioned to the cashier that someone must have cleaned out their SK books and she told me that she found a signed SK at a yard sale in my area, and of course she scooped it up quick for her husband who collects autographed books. So it does happen. :)

That's great.... and yes, I'm sure there's some good stories out there where some valuable books have been found at yard sales... Well good luck!
