My favorite site of old was The Brunching Shuttlecocks (http://www.brunching.com). It's defunct now, but they kept their archives up for perusal because we Brunchers begged and pleaded. There is a spinoff site for The Ratings (http://www.bookofratings.com), so at least you can still get your fix for one of the more popular Brunching sections. LOL, you sound like my mother. Well I for one did put organ donor on my license pretty much again the suggestions of my family (I don't even think Will did on his), but it is what it is. And if I wreck and die, or just die and someone can harvest something useful from this body, then they can have it.
I have a hard time believing that just because someone has "organ donor" on their license they won't have the same type of medical attention because of organ-hungry hospitals/doctors out there. That just sounds ridiculous.

Although, at the same time, I believe people SHOULD be able to sell their own organs while alive, especially, kidney's ovaries, a bit of a liver, bone marrow. I mean it's their body, they can do what they want to with it.
But it leads to other problems, capitalism, rich people buying their lives while the poor die (which happens already) blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, I'm not suggesting that hospitals are scavenging every body that comes into the ICU for spare body parts-in the manner of a Quentin Tarantino flick or something that would happen in the PRC or DPRK-but if you think you can prescribe what happens to you after you lose consciousness you're not being realistic.

For all this talk of living wills they can be disregarded by the hospital administration if it's in their best interest to discontinue life support, or if there's a pre-existing statute that allows them to discontinue life support, even if you haven't signed a DNR order.

I don't see the problem with healthy young people donating their organs for money-in fact, you could make the argument, as I would, that it's a lot more ethical than single men donating their sperm cells or single women donating their eggs-especially when you have people on dialysis for years, or dying as they wait for organ transplants.

Yes, most of the people who will be able to afford these organs will be wealthy, but I don't think they're any less worthy of life-saving medical advances.

It would also free up spots reserved for people who can't afford to pay whatever the market dictates, but who desperately need organ transplants.

People currently give their organs away, out of pure generosity or because of a dying loved one etc. Offering another tier of organ availability in the form of people willing to sell organs for money would just increase availability, even if it is for the more wealthy. If it means more organs available overall, then it can't be a bad thing.

As far as I knew, hospitals cannot arbitrarily decide to take patients off life support - its a decision from the family, from a document like a will or DNR or from a court order on request from a family member or spouse.

Its a tough issue, I guess - but remember we are talking about people on life support with terminal prognoses.

If you want to take this issue out of the medical arena (which is what is occuring when you opt a course of action against medical advice) then these people would already be deceased. Its through the intervening actions of the hospital doctors and staff that blood and oxygen is being pumped around their body - I think people confuse taking someone off life support as euthenasia, which it is not. Its a rational argument versus an irrational one due to the grief process, and as that legal article stated most parents end up changing their mind during the ethics committee process.

Is it ethical (or fair) for an ICU bed to be occupied indefinitely by a terminal partient on life support at the expense of a patient with a chance of recovery? Who's family is worth more?
