I was very lucky to have seen Edge of Tomorrow at the local discount theater over the weekend and was totally impressed by it, an exceptional scifi/action movie, it gets my vote as well as Minority Report and Alien

Totally agree. I firmly believe that if we did this tournament again in 25 years, Edge of Tomorrow would once again be nominated. All I'm saying is that it didn't just get nominated because it's new and timely. It's one of the best Sci-Fi films of the decade.

I watched Mimic. It was awful. Now I need to see Edge of Tomorrow.

Yeah, was not a fan of Mimic at all.

Agreed on Mimic. I watched it for our horror tournament and was not a fan.

Typical, formulaic, predictable... not much more to say.

Well, there is "implausible," but that might be ok if it weren't just such an average movie.

Apparently the physical media (dvd, bluray) version of Edge of Tomorrow will be released under the title Live Die Repeat.

Apparently the physical media (dvd, bluray) version of Edge of Tomorrow will be released under the title Live Die Repeat.

I thought that was interesting. That was the tagline for the film. I wish they would just go back to the original name All You Need is Kill from the book/graphic novel.

Dunno, that's title is a little too out there. I've read the book and liked it a lot but what does "All You Need Is Kill" even mean? Edge of Tomorrow is super corny but it's fitting.

Love Mimic.

Still a couple of days left, EoT could very well edge its way into 4th place.

Tough grouping. Not much that I didn't like here.

I'm not really sure. I just assumed it's a play on "All You Need is Love" which is a famous Beetles song.

This is amazing. I just checked IMDB and Edge of Tomorrow is officially being listed as "Live, Die, Repeat." I thought that was just for the DVD release, but it looks like the film is officially being called "Live, Die, Repeat." I've never seen anything like that before in my life.

That is rather bizarre. I wonder why the name change? I know they'll sometimes do that if it's released in another country, but odd that they would suddenly change it now.

I love any film with a character named "Snake Plissken" who wears an eye patch, but EoT is better Sci-Fi for this tournaments purposes, IMHO

Mimic

bears love it

I thought you said as much. That was the first reason why I was excited to watch it before Videodrome. Now I'm at a loss. Love it what for? It's boooring and so conventional. :beat:

I will have to re-watch it to give a real answer. I just remember loving it, and not being bored for a second. Being conventional doesn't necessarily mean bad, especially not when we're talking about genre movies.

Mimic is a great monster film. I love the claustrophobic, otherworldly setting. Seeing characters fighting for their lives and looking up and not just seeing sunlight but people walking around and going about their day and the old, abandoned subways tunnels and stations, it's like a forgotten world out of the past. In my eyes there are only two things a monster movie needs to be successful: an interesting, original monster (which mimic had) and a unique setting, the fact that it was compentently directed by Guillermo Del Toro and competently acted by Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, Josh Brolin and the always awesome Charles S. Dutton is just a bonus that takes it from above average to very good.

The Relic is still my favourite monster movie from the 90's, with mimic at a very close second or third.

A good monster movie should also have some surprises. Somewhere. At some point.

I agree with competently directed. And the performances were adequate. The editing was acceptable. It is a movie and you can watch it.

It is a movie and you can watch it.It's more than can be said of the great majority of our nomimants. Moreover, I remember being really moved by the ending (my being a Catholic might have something to do with this, of course; then, I always love the idea of a groundless hope fulfilled against hope and all reason). I absolutely loved the boy with the shoes, and, come to think of it, quite a lot of moments. For some reason, I took them closer to heart than similar moments in other similar films, and it must say something about the quality of the movie. (well, at least for me)

I give you the boy with the shoes. There's some nice character business. Though they didn't so deeply affect me as that.

However, I don't think the ending was particularly religious. It's expected. For me to be moved by hope against hope, I will read Stephen King.

Of course not. I just meant that I know the feeling and I didn't get it. But maybe that's just me.
