Time Bandits!!!!!!

Thematically, Time Bandits might be science fiction. Really, it flies directly in the face of that tradition: it is anti-rational. Few Romantic fables are quite so bold as to explicitly make technology the province of Evil. However, many of the great science fiction classics warn of various dangers -- works certainly don't have to be all rosy pro-tech to belong to the genre.

Regardless, the subject matter is fantasy. The film openly plays with epistemic possibilities -- indeed, it could be that fantasy subjects did exist or will exist in an unreachable and unknowable time. It's a good theme, and one, again, that might be encompassed by science fiction: the simple admission of how much we don't know for sure. Yet exactly because of all this, I don't see any shame in fantasy. That's another genre I love. It's just a different thing. And that's where I'd place TB.

I'd place it in both. Perhaps later we could do a fantasy tournament, too.

I'd like a tdt.org tournament just for best time travel movie that is totally open as far as approach and genre. I think we've shown how there are so many different quality examples.

I think a best worst movie tournament might be fun.

Well the clear winner of that tourney will be: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull

On every level, It's absolutely fucking shit!!!!

I'm shocked, SHOCKED! Children of Men is in third. I can't believe it even needed a tiebreaker. I'm going to need a little more information. Do you guys think the other films are better than Children of Men or have you just not seen Children of Men?

Time Bandits is classic, but it doesn't come close to Children of Men. I really like Sunshine too, but I still feel Children of Men blows it away. I thought it was going to go much farther in the tournament. I have no problem if people prefer the other films over Children of Men, I just want to make sure people have actually seen it.

I think it would work if we did movies that we think are just awful, or if we went the so-bad-it's-good route (like Birdemic. )

Sorry, Tim but, ANY movie with "Indiana Jones" in it cannot be total crap. Not as good as the others, fine. Total crap, impossible

I too have seen all three films here and the best by far is Time Bandits. It's even part of The Criterion Collection.

The fact that it was an "Indiana Jones" movie is its most heinous crime. It completely destroyed the franchise and raped my fond childhood memory of one of cinema's most iconic screen heroes!!! :onfire:

... Time Bandits (i)s even part of The Criterion Collection.
Cause it's over 30 years old. Just a shame to see two fine science ficton films eliminated by absurdism, however well it might have been directed.

I've seen Children of Men, but sorry to say, didn't care for it at all.

Same here. I heard quite a few people talk about how good it was before I watched it. I didn’t see what was so great about it. Also it just barely qualifies as sci-fi IMHO.

I don’t know… It’s hard for me to explain.

It’s a story about a dystopian future where everyone on earth is sterile. The dystopian future part makes it a little sci-fi, but other than that, there’s really not much science involved. At least not the science that would qualify a movie as sci-fi to me.

Science might advance in the next 30 years more visibly than it did in the last 30. If so, I hope the world is changed for the better.
