I went with:

Videodrome
Stalker
Timecrimes
Robocop
Jurassic Park
Waterworld

I hope people give enough love to Waterworld, it's extremely misunderstood and under-appreciated.

I hated Waterworld... Which is too bad, because I liked the concept of the movie. It was just not something I could vote for.

Waterworld has 8 votes and Videodrome has 6..

brb, killing self.

But what about Dennis Hopper's over-the-top acting as the stereotypical head villain? Now come on: that alone surely raises it from mere fizzled concept to seriously unforgettable disaster. I mean, how many end of the world movies can make you actually wish that the world would come to an end just so that you don't have to watch any more? Remarkable!

Oh, and

Videodrome
Stalker
Jurassic Park
Robocop
Timecrimes

I never would have dreamed so many people liked Waterworld. If it has so many fans, how did it become one of the biggest box office bombs of all time?

Mattrick

Look at the money Waterworld made on rentals...there is your answer lol. (it also was a huge draw internationally...in the end the film almost doubles it's money.

A result of pure hype. The movie made tons of news for being a stinker and people wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Count me among them. After I watched it, I realized that everybody was right, for the most part.

I love Waterworld and I first saw it on cable. Lots of movies failed at the box office but then gained their following on TV and home video.

Waterworld is indeed a poorly constructed movie but somehow despite that (or maybe even partly because of it) I find myself stopping to watch it whenever I come across it on TV. I figure that if it can lure me in everytime then it must have done something right.

I find Waterworld endearing. It's like the amazing movie that couldn't lol. I watched it a lot when I was a kid on my black box.

The premise and setting of Waterworld is pretty unique.

My dad loves Waterworld. Like genuinely loves it, without a trace of irony. Pretty cool concept at least - in fact, I'd love to see it remade. If someone just took the basic concept and made a truly classic movie out of it. Better a poor remade than a great one, imo.

What's wrong with it as is? I would however love an extended edition on blu-Ray.

Mattrick
07-08-2014, 01:20 AM
Waterworld is the most expensive low budget film ever made. There is definitely a b-movie feel to it. The amount of money they spent on building massive tanks, using water etc ate up a great deal of that budget.

Jeez… I didn't sign up for freaking Waterworld addicts support. This discussion is going downhill...

Yeah as much as I love Waterworld as an overlooked classic, I hope Stalker gets more votes.

The Mist and Jurassic Park for me.

Mattrick
07-08-2014, 01:10 PM
The mist is doing way better as a Sci fi than a horror, power of multiple votes.

Randall Flagg

3 only. The Mist, Jurassic Park and Robocop.

Not that far off, but how does Heavy Metal get more votes than Stalker? A fun cartoon with tits I guess....

Basically. Most of the segments are science fantasy. A few spots do come close to real sci-fi, tho.

mae
07-10-2014, 07:35 AM
Come on, Stalker, you can do it!

Jean
07-10-2014, 11:49 AM
No, it doesn't look like it can :sad bear:

mae

Just needs one more vote to tie for sixth and 28 people voted, so this can get a few more votes (another group right now has 32 voters).

There are 17 votes for The Mist, yet I had to fight for it to be included as apparently it's not Sci-fi... :rolleyes2:

fernandito
07-13-2014, 09:13 AM
Don't be so surprised, this is a King site after all

The following films will be moving on to the next round
Videodrome
The Mist
Robocop
Jurassic Park
Waterworld

There will be a tie breaker for the final berth
Heavy Metal
Le Voyage dans la Lune

mae

Hopefully we get another last-minute vote or two to move Stalker in for the tiebreaker.

Heavy Metal was the shit at the time it was released. It deserves to move on!!!

Mattrick

The Mist just isn't a sci-fi film to me and much like Hugo, regretably, won't get votes from me.

What. You'd call it "Horror"?

Mattrick
07-13-2014, 06:24 PM
It's straight up 1950's drive-in horror. There are some sci-fi elements but they are loose and not massive aspects of the plot. In fact, I'd say the movie took a more theological approach than a sci-fi approach as the themes are more centred around faith and religion than anything else. I don't think it got any of my votes in the horror tournament either which is a shame since we only had one vote each or else I think it would have fared better if we could have picked multiple. I think it has 3 times more votes as a sci-fi film than a horror film. Don't really want to debate about it anymore though, the qualifications for a film to be in this tournament is a post mortem discussion now anyways. Just wanted to be clear that the reason I didn't vote for it isn't because I don't like it, because I really like it lol

Damn, I'm too late. Not that it matters but I voted for Jurassic Park and Timecrimes. How is it that Timecrimes did so poorly :(

It's my fault. Timecrimes has been in my queue since Heather gave me a free trial of Netflix. Still haven't watched it.
