Note:
Although you can vote for a maximum of 6 films in the polls, it doesn't necessarily mean you HAVE to vote for 6. We encourage you to vote only on those you strongly feel deserve to move on to the next round.

I agree about Primer. I didn't like it as much as I wanted too.

Note: I edited the poll and changed "Max Max" to "Mad Max".
I only voted for 3: Mad Max, Starship Troopers, and Gorjira.

Same here, really. I thought it had some clever ideas, especially the idea that time travel is accidental and not in a wacky way, either, but...I don't know, it just seemed a little too clever for its own good at times. I love great time travel stories, so much so that I'm trying to write one, but there haven't been too many great fresh time travel movies in recent years, and oddly enough the ones that I've enjoyed most have been based on existing scifi properties.

It appears the voters understand the difference between a civilian and a citizen!

Voted:

Starship Troopers
Men In Black
Primer (my nom)

The rest I either wasn't a fan of or haven't seen. I've been meaning to watch Brazil since it made a splash in the greatest film thournament we did a while back. (EDIT - Watching Brazil tonight)

Brazil is the best film on this thread. Maybe not most representative of the genre but the best film.

Brazil is one of the best movies ever. I'm positive you'll love it.

Starship Troopers works as both an action film and biting social commentary. Plus, it has Michael "YOU WANNA LIVE FOREVER!?!?" Ironside!

Men In Black doesn't nearly get the recognition it deserves as a perfect blend of sci fi and comedy. There are not many duos out there with better chemistry than Jones and Smith.

mae

But it would be a crime if Brazil is eliminated and Men in Black moves on.

fernandito
07-06-2014, 10:32 AM
It just doesn't have as big a fanbase. It's very niche.

mae
07-08-2014, 05:59 AM
Not that niche, I don't think. It's one of the best movies of the '80s, I believe! And looks like it's four votes back of sixth place. Shameful...

I haven't seen any of them, and none of them really catch my interest enough to watch them before the bracket closes.

Mad Max is good but I feel that The Road Warrior is a much better all around film. Don't even bother with part III, Rick. It didn't exist. IT WAS NEVER MADE

Totally agree. The Road Warrior is the more iconic film.

I disagree with not watching part 3 though. It's a bad film, but it's worth a watch for a few reasons. The first reason is that it's become a part of pop culture with the phrase "TWO MEN ENTER, ONE MAN LEAVES!" The other reason is that it's so cheesy it's fun to laugh at. This is especially the case with Tina Turner.

Are you looking forward to the new Mad Max film coming out? EW just did a big spread on it.

I think it's a fun summer Blockbuster. I marvel in the craziness of the whole plot, but it works for me. I think it has some redeeming qualities, you just can't judge it on the same curve as you would some of the other more classic films in the tournament.

The Armageddon sountrack was almost more successful than the film haha

You know, I'm positive I watched Armageddon a year or so ago on a Netflix rental but I'll be damned if I can remember anything specific about it at all.

Steve Buscemi and Michael Clarke Duncan singing Leaving on a Jet Plane cracks me up.

And the part where the kids yells “Look mommy, that salesman is on TV!” gets me everytime.
