I never saw this movie, but by the comments I've read, I am afraid it's what ruined the wonderful book for many

Doubtful. It's not good. At all. But it is also rather obscure. I bet the book is more widely read than this picture is seen. And I think that I actually can understand how people usually fail to appreciate the novel, anyway -- what's good about it is subtle beside the minor but very visible faults.

That's right - when I read it the first time I didn't like it at all. It seemed too long, sloppy, and somehow beside the point. On reread I realized that the point wasn't where I had been looking.

As for the movie, I clearly remember at this very site people saying things like "I didn't read the novel, but the film was god-awful" or "I couldn't get into the novel because the film was god-awful"
