Just watched the first episode tonight, and I loved it so, so much. Here's what I loved about it:

It's not a remake of the film, which is a great first step right there. The TV series and the film share absolutely nothing in plot. What they do share, however, is a great deal in tone and atmosphere: there's quirky characters, some gorgeous snow blanketed scenery and of course, some very, very dark humour mixed with violence throughout. This is the kind of tv adaptation I'd love to see happen more: something that avoids telling a story that a previous film or TV series did so well and instead tell a story all of its own while keeping the core elements of what made the original work so successful, which in most cases is the exact opposite what most remakes do.
Some really strong performances, including from Billy Bob Thornton as the mysterious stranger who arrives in a town to create some very evil mischief (the kind of story I always enjoy, which is why Needful Things is next on my 'to read' list), and of course what drew me to the show in the first place, Martin Freeman. It's interesting watching him here, as in some ways, it's a great deal similar to previous comedic performances, including oddly enough The Office, as he can be so fucking hilarious with just a single look, but there's also a great deal different here, as the incredibly wound up insurance salesman he plays here commits some truly terrible actions. It says a lot that even in the most terrible moments, you still end up finding yourself some sympathy towards him, a testament to both the quality of the writing and Freeman's acting.
The first episode alone is just cracking good television, filled with not just great characters and some of the great humour as I mentioned earlier, but also some really nasty shocks and moments you don't see coming. It's fantastic the false sense of security just the first episode provides at times, and it's definitely keeping me glued to the screen to find out what happens next.

It's nice to find a show that comes along that has a great deal of what you're looking for and you just know that you may very well have found another show to add to your "must-watch" list.

So what are everyone else's thoughts on it so far?

James, I'm so glad you really enjoyed the first episode. I thought it was great too. I love how it has already taken some turns I wasn't expecting. Most shows would drag a lot of the story out, but they put a lot of it in the pilot.

Webstar is right, I think TV is going to start doing more limited series'. I know it's a lot harder to keep coming up with fresh new ideas, but I prefer that to dragging out some of the shows far past their expiration date. That being said, if Fargo does well, you will see a second season. Probably with new characters and a new story. Very much like True Detective and American Horror Story.

I don't want to change the subject, but FX has some pretty good shows right now. The Americans is a show I'm not sure I've heard anybody talk about here, but it's one of my "must-see" shows each week.

It has some great supporting actors: Kate Walsh was hilarious as the widow, and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) as the cop with the weak stomach.

Just watched episode 4. Now, how amazing was that beginning? "God is real."

Since the series was announced, I was hoping that there would be some link to the original film and that the stories would share a universe so to speak. I've been really enjoying the story so far, but I appreciate the link between the two, especially as it's a relatively small link that still answers a major question. Gotta admit, I really appreciate it when completely different stories not only share the same universe, but also give you another perspective on a key event and characters - it's what made me such a massive Dark Tower fan in the first place - so finding out what happened to the money in a very natural and believable way to a main character's story was a plus for me. :)

Gotta say, this show is currently the only current show that I have to sit down and watch every week at the moment. I love the quirky characters, the slow burning, over-arcing plot, and especially the dark humour that nicely reflects the original film. Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton are especially excellent to watch, but all the other performances are great, especially the two hitmen who have silent conversations, those two are hysterical!

The "based on a true story" thing is a lie! The truth behind Fargo's 'true story' (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/10792814/The-truth-behind-Fargos-true-story.html)

...the opening explanation is an untruth ("The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred"). But, in the internet dawn of 1996, only a handful of critics decided to check whether such a crime had happened in Minnesota less than a decade earlier. So the myth that Fargo's brutally violent plot really did happen pervaded.

The Coens stuck to the story during the promotion of their film, too. In an interview with Premiere in March 1996, Joel is quoted saying: "we wanted to try something based on a real story, and tell it in a way that was very pared down", before adding that the script was "pretty close" to the actual event.

However, his brother Ethan revealed the truth behind the 'true story' in the introduction to Fargo's published screenplay, the closing sentence of which read: "[the film] aims to be both homey and exotic, and pretends to be true."

Holy shit, that last episode! How fucking amazing was that?

Seriously, they must've killed off half the fucking cast in that last ep!

I did feel sorry for Don, though. He got massively fucked by Lorne. Not surprising, in fact we've been pretty much expecting it since their strange arrangement began, but still, the way Lorne arranged for him to be killed by fucking cops was brutal.

Really can't wait for the next ep, that's for sure.

Can somebody explain to me why fish rained from the heavens?

I guess there are two perspectives to answer that question: Was it a biblical plague as Stavros Milos the shopping center magnate guy obviously believed?

or was it a tornado sucked up all the fish from a lake and deposited it coincidentally right in dude's path... I forget where I heard that but it is spoken in dialogue somewhere in one of the episodes (maybe even the one following the fish storm). I remember distinctly someone saying that though. It may have been said in the police station. It is very quick and you may have missed it (or perhaps you havent seen that ep yet)

I am REALLY loving this season of Fargo.

I want to watch em all back to back when the season is completed.

Especially with the one year jump out of nowhere.

I feel this really worked. Fargo the series draws parallels with Fargo the movie without them being the same characters. The flash forward is kind of jarring but it was a clever way to get Molly to the same lumbering around, super pregnant state that Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) was in the film.

I guess it was okay the way they FF, it was more that they appeared to have jumped over the fish incident, which to me deserved much more explanation than a casual remark. I don't recall the officers' remark either. I guess we trust they have a game plan as the series has been outstanding thus far.

Just, well I get nervous easy since "Lost" left a real bad taste in my mouth. It's hard to trust TV anymore.

This was something I really appreciated about last week's episode, as well. I also adore how the series has taken this long to get to this parallel, establishing Molly first as the sidekick, essentially, (with the nice little red herring of her partner and his pregnant wife drawing a little parallel with Marge and her husband,) then we had Molly and Gus working together as partners and slowly developing as something a little more than that, and now we see, as you said, the clear parallel to Marge and her rather cute, slightly laid back marriage to her husband. I think taking this long to get to this point and taking the time to establish Molly as very much her own character and not just a Marge copy really helped - seeing the parallel is something to make the audience appreciate it rather than making instant unfavourable comparisons to the original source material. I've said it once, I'll say it again: Fargo is one of the best film-to-TV adaptations I have ever seen.

It was crazy how much Lester changed in a year but the writing made it believable.

Watched the finale on Sunday and absolutely loved it. I think the only complaint I have is that Lester was found out a little too easily, with Molly just stumbling across rather neat little evidence that Lorne made. After all the work she had put into trying to bust Lester, it just seemed a little too easy, imo. But everything else was perfect, I thought. In fact, I loved the whole series, especially the parallels between Gus and Lester, and how after encountering Lorne, each went their own path towards light or darkness. I seriously cannot wait for the blu ray release, so I can watch the whole thing again (not something I often rush out to do, but I just adore the story of this show so much). In the meantime, I might check out True Detective. I've heard a lot of great things about that.

Caught the first episode of the new series. Oh, I'm so glad this show is back. Definitely one of my favourites. I was a little worried that the low reception season 2 of True Detective received would be a bad sign, (not that I watched it, I was certainly in no rush after all the bad reviews,) but despite a whole new cast of characters, it still feels brilliantly Fargo. I love that it still has the cute married couple template (loved seeing little Molly having a story read to her), I loved the moment at the diner that made you think, "Well THAT escalated quickly!", I even loved the ordinary couple with Kirsten Dunst and Meth Damon (let's be honest, it's gonna be a while before he loses that name) getting caught up in it all. I'm certainly excited to see where it's all heading, anyway.

I don't know about that, but they were great scenes. A couple of "Godfather I & II" and "Goodfellas" scenes come immediately to mind and I'm sure a few more. The Fargo scenes were pretty cool though.

Edit: Sam Jackson/John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction", Finale of "Breaking Bad", I'm sure I could go on.

Yes!!! IMO it is the best (and hippest) show currently broadcasting on television. At the very least the best in it's genre: Crime Drama. I don't believe I will be alone in that assertion.

Jeffrey Donovan is a fantastic actor. He also was great in a small role this year in Sicario. I think he gave one of the best performances on a stellar cast this year on Fargo. I hope he gets noticed for it.

I first saw Donovan on a short-lived USA show called Touching Evil with Vera Farmiga. I've followed him ever since.

As for his demise, that's what's great about this season of Fargo. There's no template. People can go at any time, doesn't matter how big the character or actor.

Yup, that was him. Actually, it was called J. Edgar. Those are essentially the move roles Donovan gets. They're usually smaller roles, kind of like his character in Sicario. He deserves better because he's a real talent. That being said, a show like Fargo is on the big screen level and, as you can tell by the cast, has attracted quite a bit of big screen talent in the first two seasons.

"Hoover" was easier to type. Actually, I just viewed that film the other day. Leo, was awesome in the flick as well. You may be surprised, but I also watch films, as well as you do. Am I being "catty"? Yes, a bit, but the "Giants" fucked up and lost a close one to the, "Jets" and I am in a quandry as to how I feel about that. LOL LOL Holiday season can be both, "Joyous" and "stressful" at the same time. Take a chill pill, Roger Ebert!!! LOL J/K, relax. Who loves ya baby? LOL LOL

Spent the day, "Christmas Shopping" after the Giants/Jets game. Lord, I wish they had some of these toys back when I was a kid!!! LOL LOL Kids today have no idea how "blessed" they are!!!! We had to play in the "dirt"!!! LOL My apologies, I digress!!! LOL LOL LOL

With the current "Whacked standings" I wonder what they have in store for the "finale". Quite a few of the major characters are headed to the clearing. I am also aware that major character deaths are common for this show. Just not totally pleased with how they have met their demise. It is still an absolutely wonderful show and I look forward to what the writers have in store for us. I am relatively certain it will be great!!!

So far, this show does not disappoint!!!! New episode tomorrow!!!!

Both Rye and Hanzee saw one outside the diner and Hanzee was missing some time. Lou's father-in-law has a whole room with UFO stuff and his wife was transfixed by their daughter's drawing that looked like it had one. There definitely have been a lot of hints.

Did you notice the author/narrator didn't mention the UFO? None of the survivors must have mentioned it later on for it to be recorded in history. Of course, who can blame them?

I thought they would have the UFO thing closer to the "actual" incident that happened to an officer in Minnesota in '79. Something like Lou traveling down a highway, seeing a light, and then waking up hours later on the side of the road.

I wasn't disappointed but there could have been a little more action in the finale. I never thought we would get as much as we did with the UFOs. It was just a quirky thing that was big in the area at the time that they wanted to include. I think where everyone ended up was perfect for what happened this season so that is why it was still a satisfying end in my opinion. I also loved the season one easter eggs.

I think Floyd Gerhardt could survive. She had a small stab wound in the gut. I was thinking Peggy could've escaped from the car while Lou was distracted getting the news about his wife.

About the UFO, I think after seeing humans killing each other they decided to leave, after being there at the beginning and the end of this story observing us. Sort of a comment on how violent we are as a race.

Well the reason I think he might survive is from Milligan's dialogue. When the King is crowned he shows an act of kindness and an act of cruelty. For Milligan's legend of cruelty to spread, Ricky G would have to live to tell the tale. That's why Milligan stays the finishing blow. We dont know if he survives, but he could (although his chest and face looked like something from the butcher shop). But then again he looked like he was going to meet his maker, lol.

skyofcrack
12-16-2015, 09:34 AM
That guy will die but he will suffer first hence why Milligan didn't want his partner to finish him off. I also remember during the shootout at the motel that one cop said, 'it's Rapid City all over again.' Maybe we'll see a flashback to that at some point.

Fargo is a solid show. Some very good storytelling. I love the anthology format. Personally, I loved Season 2 the best. Season 1 is very good as well. Season 3 has been a little slower and not as explosive, but I can tell it's about to ramp up.

Plus, I love Carrie Coon. With her work on Fargo and Leftovers, she's my TV MVP.
Agreed. She is a brilliant actress.

That was brutal at the end. I think it was worse not seeing it and not knowing if she was dead or not.

Also, this season has had at least one gross moment per episode.

Brutal was exactly the word that came to mind when I saw it, too. Whoa.

I have been on vacation and haven't checked in here myself recently but I am surprised that there isn't one comment about the last several episodes of this show.

It was a slower season and a lot of people did not like the open ending but overall I still really enjoyed it. The bowling alley was pretty cool and a nod to The Big Lebowski (as well as other things.) Mr. Wrench teaming up with Nikki was exciting and it was great to see them out-smart Varga a few times. I am a little mixed on whether Emmit deserved what he got but it did tie into the theme of the season which was that the truth is what people believe it is. Wrench thought he had a more direct hand in what happened to Ray and Nikki and punished him for it. They also left us to decide our own truth at the end, whether Varga or Gloria were right.

It's a shame this might be the last ever episode. Hawley said he wasn't sure if he had anymore ideas on where to take the show.

Hawley is turning into a rock star. He might shelve Fargo just because he has made it such a big hit and he has offers galore coming in on new and different projects. There is something to be said about an artist who wont dilute the product just because he can make some more money. I have thoroughly enjoyed all three seasons of Fargo.

Really looking forward to his Vonnegut adaptation and film directorial debut.

I've been meaning to come in here and post my thoughts on the finale and the season in general. Overall, I thought it was a very solid season. I didn't love it as much as season 2 though. Personally, I thought Carrie Coon didn't have enough to do. Of course, I might be a little biased because I'm such a huge fan of her work, but I thought she was going to play a larger role in uncovering what was going on and catching these guys.

I thought the stuff with Mary Elizabeth Winsted was great. I love how they tied in a character from season 2 as well. There just seemed to be something missing that was keeping me from loving it as much as the first two seasons.

I think Hawley is really going places. As much as I want him to do another season of Fargo, I understand and I'm excited to see anything he produces.

Also, Jessie Buckley is a national treasure.

My grandfather used that term right up until the day he died. A different generation.

2020 has been a difficult year, but Jessie Buckley singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic while giving a handjob in a car might just be the highlight of my year.

I could not stop laughing. Dude didn't even make it to the second verse.

This line has some extra significance for me tonight as I viewed the latest ep:

"You know what I think? Every country has its own type criminal.
In America we got the Confidence Man:
Snake Oil Salesman... Grifter.
He don't rob you as much as trick you into robbing yourself. See 'cause in America people wanna believe.
They got that Dream... and a Dreamer? you can fleece."

Anyone watch the finale? What did y'all think of the rest of the season?

Personally I thought it was solid with some very interesting characters. There were a few odd choices, particularly how some characters met their end and having a Wizard of Oz themed episode. The credits reveal connecting this season to season two was nice. Afterwards I read that connection was what inspired this season's story.
