TheDarkTower.org (http://www.thedarktower.org/)is proud to be the EXCLUSIVE site to auction this new, unique and fine Collectible item.
For your consideration is an ORIGINAL drawing by world renowned artist Don Maitz! (http://www.paravia.com/DonMaitz/website/index.html)
This full page piece is drawn in a 1st trade edition of Stephen King’s“Duma Key”. With splashes of color it is a stunning image.
Maitz also contacted Stephen King and had King sign the book! Yes, Stephen King signed the book!
Not only did King sign it, but the signature is not as cramped as most of King’s recent signatures.

This is a great looking piece. Are a lot of these auctions planned or will this and the "Desperation" be the only two for now?

I know of other auctions still to come, but I believe the remarqued books by Don are the only ones signed by SK.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you...

Don Maitz
04-09-2014, 04:43 PM
Wow It DOES look like Michael Jackson!! Ha! I had no idea I was doing a posthumous likeness. It is a complete accident!! The Duma Key book holds special interest to me as there are threads in the story that strike close to home. I have lived in Sarasota, FL for 24 years ,so the setting is quite familiar. I visited Casey Key for the first time with my soon to be wife, author and artist, Janny Wurts, at her parents house on North Casey Key to get research for a painting I was doing of... a dark pirate ship coming out of a dawn sky Way too coincidental that the first thing the artist character in the book sketched on Duma Key was a dark ship on a sunset horizon. I remember jogging to the far end of the barrier island where there was a house under construction, the house that Stephen King later purchased. One of the guests at our wedding on North Casey Key was Tom Cross who lived in a very old overgrown largish house on the island. His wife would see Stephen King walking past her driveway from time to time. It is likely that the overgrown property inspired King. I have been peripheral to the art scene in Sarasota, knew the bridge described in the book, and walked the beaches. More importantly, I could relate to the angst experienced by the artist character as his sold paintings influenced people in a very BAD way. This story became one I had identified with and later illustrated for the oversized book, Knowing Darkness, the Art of Stephen King. You can see this painting along with the color art I did for Desperation and the edition of watercolor remarques I did for Desperation also on my website <www.paravia.com>.- scroll under "Special Features"on the Myth And Legends toolbar at the top area of my site. The Desperation watercolor remarques inspired me to do a watercolor for this auction. I want to thank all of those that support this Haven Fund auction. Stephen King has done a fine thing by personally signing the two books for the auction. Helped by my urging through his secretary, in Bangor. Stephen King has done even a finer thing by initiating this fund. I know many creative people that provide us entertainment while living on financial thin ice. Thank you all for supporting this cause.

Hi Don. Welcome to the forum. Wow, that's a great post and some really interesting background. I found the photo you mean at http://www.paravia.com/DonMaitz/website/MythLegend/SpecialFeatures/GhostShip.html. That's a really beautiful and very cool Ghost Ship painting. It's stunning!

That is true, Simon though a $10 donation gets you an entry into the Grand Prize drawing for a King signed book at the end of the HF. The Wizard still has a few choice items in his cloak for you guys. There are more remarqued books and a special item or two yet to come!!! The Haven Fund Whore rarely sleeps!!

Btw I wanted to take a moment to point out that while all the various artists are very supportive of my crazy shit over the years, Don has always been just a wee bit over and above. I think it's worth a virtual round of applause for them all as they contribute annually and selflessly and even try to come up with newer and more marketable items. Just a great group of folks!!

As an "organizer" you occasionally come across a item you "organized", but want to own. For me, this is it, but I suppose it is just not in the cards. Best to the ultimate winner. I'm done!!

I know some of you feel that I hype these things a little much, but for your consideration, this is one of those "Exclusive to TDT.Org Auction items". The drawing by Mr. Maitz is to my knowledge, the first he has ever done, he signed it and then forwarded it to Mr. King to be signed, who in fact kept the preliminary sketch's for himself!! This item is more a S/L than any S/L before it and Mr. King has the drawings of YOUR purchased book (if you win it of course)!!! You do not get more exclusive than that!!! I would go out on a limb and say that this (and the prior auction) may be the 1/1's of all time!!

I'm still surprised "Desperation" didn't tip over the 1K mark considering it was also a slipcased Gift Edition and the great remarque and signature - but this one is already close to 1K on the first day, so this could go very very VERY high! Nice!

Wow!! I am just amazed at how well this is doing. It's a wonderful drawing, really unique, but I never would have expected this. Just great!! I couldn't be happier!!! Anyone from here still on it? I bowed out at just under a grand.

Has anyone else noted the rivulets of "red" leaping off her cloak? Like it was made of "blood"? Very cool indeed!!!

This is probably crazy, but it's fun to speculate. King kept the original sketch's telling, Don he liked them a lot. Don, forwarded the auction links to SK so he could monitor the auction. Could he be the new player? We may never know, but it is fun to speculate!!

Edit: BTW, the above statements are no "Haven Fund Whore" shine on to increase activity. To the best of my knowledge the above events are accurate and true.

I am very pleased that this item has done so well in the auction. Thank you bidders. I try to make each remarque I do is a one of a kind. I may do the same character as with Collie in Desperation, but I put him in a different scene or doing something different described in the story. I sometimes use pencil, colored pencil, or watercolor. When I am commissioned to do a remarque , I try to take into account suggestions. If I'm asked to make a remarque like one I did previously, I find what I can alter to make it a bit different.
