The 2014 Constant Reader Awards (CRAs) are now underway, with Round 1 polls opening each Wednesday and Friday from March 19 until April 30. Each poll will be open for 7 days and close automatically. Then the FAS (Final Average Score, an average of all received votes) will be calculated and posted at the end of the poll and updated here as well. The top 30 books (highlighted in green) will move on to Round 2, to begin on May 7.

That first bracket is awful. I don't think I gave out anything above a 2.5 for any of the books.

I realize that my opinion of King’s books runs a little contrary to most.

I just found it odd that in the first bracket, none of them even crack the top half of my list. It’s the only one that does that too. All the others have at least one book that I’ll rate as a 3 or above

Salems Lot and The Shining are in my top 5. The other 3 being Stand, It and Pet Sematary.

Standings have been added to the first post here, and will be continually updated with each round closing. Since there is no automatic advancement as in prior years, and only the overall Top 30 move on to the second round, please keep in mind that, looking back, a book needed to get a score of just above 4.0 in order to get to the second round.

Out of curiosity, why is there a score of 0, as opposed to 1 and 1.5? I was taking 1 to mean you didn't like it, but would you then vote zero?

I believe a while back there was talk of being able to vote for zero because 1 is still a rating of some small merit while zero really means you didn't like it at all.

Jean
03-27-2014, 12:16 AM
how would you calculate the ratings if there's even one zero? I thought you were multiplying and dividing, but then one single zero would make it all a zero

No, it's an average of all the votes. So that means the total sum of the votes divided by the number of votes. If we take Carrie as an example, it received two 5s, three 4.5s, nine 4s, two 3.5s, six 3s, two 2.5s, and one 2. Added together this gives us 91.5. Also, it's a total of 25 unique votes. 91.5 divided by 25 equals 3.66. That's the rating that Carrie received (officially 3.660000000, with a few trailing zeros, since for our purposes we count to the ninth decimal point). If there was a 26th vote of zero, the total would remain the same, but the number of votes would be higher and thus the average lower: 91.5 divided by 26 equals 3.519230769. So you can go ahead and vote zero if you feel so inclined.

I don't think books should be penalized in their rankings because people havent read them. Zero's can have a profound affect on average scores, and therefore someone voting that they havent read the book has more impact on the score than someone who has read the book and hated it. I think that scores of zero should not be included in your figures at all. Just my thought.

mae
03-30-2014, 04:17 AM
Never read votes are not counted for the score. But if you disliked the book enough to give it a zero, you're free to do so though I can't imagine anyone really doing so.

IMHO If you have never read the book, you should be precluded from voting on it. Of course, we are on the "Honor System" in that regard.

I'll give it at least 1, I promise. Maybe even 2 if I feel generous. But yes, it will be interesting to see how many zeros will appear with voting on later books.

2. It - 4.709677419 (94.19%)
3. The Long Walk - 4.640000000 (92.80%)

This makes me very happy :D My two favorite books appear to be sitting right near the top at the moment. Hopefully they'll stay there.

I gave a "1" to Gerald's Game because I put it down and never had the desire to pick it back up again. I'm reserving my "0" for Under The Dome . . . because I SHOULD have put it down and never picked it up again, but didn't. And I am all the dumber for having slogged through it to the bitter end. I posted a scathing review of it on Amazon, which drew a fair degree of pissed off replies.

How the hell can DTIII exceed DTII, and The Long Walk?

Wow, I'm surprised it's above The Long Walk. It seems like the voting this year seems to be more on the higher side? Is that true?

Jean

the three are brilliant, but TWL is three times as brilliant as either of the two, just due to the number of pages the brilliance issues forth from

I voted DT III half a point higher than DT II. But I have no idea why it's ahead of TLW.

Jean

I gave each of them a 5

but if I could, TWL would be a 5+

someone else gave W&G a zero. I will not point.

Deservedly so. Not in the case of DT2.

Song of Susannah is easily my second-most favorite of the series. That's at least one five from me.

I think I see one more "0" in the upcoming five or so brackets left. But perhaps it will be a 1. Depends on my mood at the time. Certainly some good 4.5 and 5 ratings yet to come.

Not from me. While SoS is my least favorite DT book, it is entertaining enough to stay out of the 0 - 2 territory. And I rather liked Wolves.

With today's bracket closing, The Running Man, Roadwork, Rose Madder, and Nightmares & Dreamscapes have been eliminated. That last is interesting, because N&D has rated 31st, 29th, and 26th in our last three Constant Reader Awards, making it to the second round the last two times.

Cujo might get some from bears once bears do the reread (although I think I already gave it at least a 4)

Firestarter never will, not from me. It's boring, and I didn't like the characters.

Yes, this is the first time Everything's Eventual won't be advancing to Round 2. Also, The Dark Half, Hearts in Atlantis, Danse Macabre, Blaze, Just After Sunset, and Blockade Billy have all been eliminated.
