The purpose of this thread is to bring attention to the Calendar, mention relevant incidents in either King's personal history, or dates that occurred in a King book.
The blurbs posted in the calendar are worded to avoid spoilers. Particularly in the final three Dark Tower books.
Some items from older books, if read on a daily basis could give bits and pieces away. An example is January, which has many dates and entries for Roadwork. The book is over 30 year old, yet some may not have read it, and don't want anything given away.
For those individuals, I will try to uses spolier tags on crucial events.
Other than that, discussion is encouraged.
Some days there will be few, or no events, others have many.

Todays event:
Roadwork (1974)
At 1:15pm Sal Magliore called Bart Dawes and told him they could do business.

If anyone has a moment, you should totally check out this calendar. Randall Flagg and a small team have been working it for a few months now.

Most significant occurrences in the King world are on there.

I am jumping the gun a bit, but on January 15, in Stephen King history:

1909-Rose Red-John & Ellen Rimbauer move in to Rose Red

1969-The first appearance of King on a magazine cover, that of 'The Maine Campus' (I wonder if a collector has this?)

1974-Roadwork-Bart Dawes offers Sal Magliore $3,000 to find Olivia Brenner and invest $15,000 on her behalf.

1981-The Plant.
Interesting to note the subtle textual differences between the original (view here at the Catalog (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=1127)), and the E-version.

http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/5185/theplantpartonefacepi7.jpg

Various memos were sent between Roger Wade and John Kenton about Carlos Detweiller's letter and other submissions. Harlow Enders gave Zenith House another twelve months to get on sound financial ground.

Randall Flagg
01-16-2008, 06:58 AM
The Plant:

Roadwork:
Dawes posts checkbook to wife. That evening he saw 'The Exorcist' at the movie theater.

January 19, 1990 was an important day in Dark Tower history:
Stephen King wrote in his journal. That night he completed 'The Wastelands' manuscript after a five hour session. It was over 800 pages long and King acknowledged that there were a few continuity glitches. As of that point in his career he felt the book was the high point.

February 9th. I apologize in advance for catching your attention, but I thought this particular entry in the King Calendar (temporarily) deserved it's own thread. It will be quickly folded back into the original thread.
Apologies also for jumping the gun on the date, but circumstances dictate.

To wit:

According to a death notice in the May 1985 Castle Rock newsletter, this is the day Richard Bachman died. The notice reads: 'Richard Bachman, 40(?) of New Hampshire (pick a town, make one up?) died of exposure February 9th, 1985. Bachman, a writer is survived by his wife, Claudia Inez, and half brother, John swithen. Bachman was a merchant seaman for many years before settling down on a dairy farm to write.

In 1984 Stephen King wrote in his journal. He had received a call from Sam Vaughn of Doubleday who told him they had received over 3,000 letters wanting 'The Dark Tower' to be republished. It was Owen King's seventh birthday.

June 19th is A very significant date in King and Dark Tower History.
Siginifcant enough to deserve it's own thread (which will be later merged into the 'Today in King History' thread.

King begins to write the Dark Tower Cycle (1970)
The Dark Tower:The Gunslinger-King wrote in his journal.....(1980)-King wrote in his journal. Kirby McCauley told him that Donald Grant wanted to publish 'The Gunslinger' stories in a single volume, titled 'The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger'. King authorized McCauley to make the deal. He aslo noted that he believed 'Pet Sematary' too grim to publish. He got drunk to celebrate the likely ending of his teaching career.
The Dark Tower-King wrote in his journal. He received the author's...(1987)-King wrote in his journal. He received the author's copy of 'The Drawing of the Three' and decided to allow NAL to publish the first two 'Dark Tower' novels as trade paperbacks. He got drunk to celebrate.
Stephen King joins Alcoholics Anonymous (1988 )
The Dark Tower-King wrote in his journal...(1988 )-Stephen King wrote in his journal. He had gone a year without drugs or alcohol and thought this had saved his life and probably his marriage. He noted that he wanted to get back to writing 'The Dark Tower' series but couldn't work out how.
The Dark Tower-Stephen King wrote in his journal...(1995)-Stephen King wrote in his journal. Owen King graduated from Bangor High. Stephen and Tabitha attended the ceremony at the Bangor Auditorium and then drove to their Lovell house. King thought he was ready to continue the 'Dark Tower' series. Naomi King had an allergic reaction to something, possibly shellfish.
King struck by van (1999) while on walk.-
According to Wikipedia:
Quote:
Car accident
In the summer of 1999, King had finished the memoir section of On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Writing) but had abandoned the book for nearly eighteen months, unsure of how or whether to proceed. King says that it was the first book that he'd abandoned since writing The Stand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stand) decades earlier. He had just decided to continue the book and on June 17 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_17) wrote a list of questions fans frequently asked him about writing; on June 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_18), he wrote four pages of the writing section.
On June 19 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_19), at about 4:30 p.m., he was walking on the right shoulder of Route 5 in Center Lovell, Maine. Driver Bryan Smith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryan_Smith), distracted by an unrestrained Rottweiler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rottweiler) named Bullet, moving in the back of his 1985 Dodge Caravan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Caravan),[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_king#_note-5) struck King, who landed in a depression in the ground about 14 feet from the pavement of Route 5.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_king#_note-onwriting)
Smith was leaning to the rear of his vehicle trying to restrain his dog and was not watching the road when he struck King. According to Oxford County Sheriff deputy Matt Baker, King was struck from behind and witnesses said the driver was not speeding or reckless.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_king#_note-6) King's website, however, states this is incorrect and that King was walking facing traffic.
King was conscious enough to give the deputy phone numbers to contact his family but was in considerable pain. King mentioned in an interview that he told a paramedic he knew he was going into shock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_%28medical%29), as he had done research on the subject for his writing. The author was first transported to Northern Cumberland Hospital in Bridgton and then flown by helicopter to Central Maine Hospital in Lewiston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewiston%2C_Maine). His injuries — a collapsed right lung, multiple fractures of the right leg, scalp laceration and a broken hip — kept him in Central Maine Medical Center until July 9 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_9), almost three weeks later.
Earlier that year, King had finished most of From a Buick 8 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_a_Buick_8), a novel in which a character dies after getting struck by a car. Of the similarities, King says that he tries "not to make too much of it." King's work had certainly featured car accidents and their horrors before. His 1987 novel Misery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misery_%28novel%29) also concerned a writer who experiences severe injuries in an auto accident, and auto wrecks figure prominently in The Dead Zone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dead_Zone_%28novel%29) and Thinner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinner_%28novel%29). In Christine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine), a 1958 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958) Plymouth Fury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_Fury) runs down its enemies. 1994's Insomnia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insomnia_%28novel%29) has a main character struck dead by a car, and central to Pet Sematary's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Sematary) plot is the scene in which a tractor-trailer strikes and kills the protagonist's young son. Following his accident, King wrote Dreamcatcher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcatcher_%28novel%29), in which a central character suffers injuries similar to King's own after being struck by a car.
After five operations in ten days and physical therapy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_therapy), King resumed work on On Writing in July, though his hip was still shattered and he could only sit for about forty minutes before the pain became intolerable.
King's lawyer and two others purchased Smith's van for $1,500, reportedly to avoid it appearing on eBay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBay). The van was later crushed at a junkyard, though King mentioned during an interview with Fresh Air (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresh_Air)'s Terry Gross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Gross) that he wanted to destroy the vehicle with a sledgehammer.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_king#_note-7) Smith, a disabled construction worker, died of an overdose of pain medication on September 21 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_21), 2000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000) (King's birthday) at the age of 43.
Two years later, King suffered a severe case of pneumonia as a direct result of the puncturing of his lung at the time of the accident. The lower portion of one lung became infected and had putrified. During this time Tabitha King was inspired to redesign his studio. Stephen visited the space while his books and belongings were packed away. What he saw was an image of what his studio would look like if he died, providing a seed for his novel Lisey's Story.

DTVI-Stephen King wrote in his journal at the Lovell home..(1994)

Route 7, even though Charles McCausland had been hit and killed while walking there

Randall Flagg
07-19-2008, 08:47 AM
The 19th always seems to have something interesting from King's past:
July 19, 1977

Stephen King wrote in his journal. He went to see 'Star Wars', travelling to
the cinema by motorcycle. He thought of selling parts of his gunslinger
novel to one of the fantasy magazines. He also got 'hammered' watching
the All-Star Game (National League 7, American League 5). Tabitha King
was displeased over the drinking

Randall Flagg
08-14-2008, 03:06 PM
Today 1984:

Stephen King wrote in his journal. He met with Elaine Kloster from NAL
and Kirby McCauley. Both wanted him to allow publication of ‘The
Gunslinger’ as a trade paperback but King passed on the idea. He noted an
idea about a long novel featuring a scary clown that was really the worst
monster in the world

Sand blocks road leading to home of Stephen King (http://www.tampabays10.com/news/watercooler/story.aspx?storyid=88869&catid=58)

Sarasota, Florida - Gustav left a mess behind on the roadway leading to author Stephen King's Casey Key home in Sarasota. County workers have been working all day to clear the sand from the road.

The sand was blown over the roadway Sunday as Gustav churned in the Gulf of Mexico. Workers expect to have everything back to normal by the end of the day.

Geee I read this and thought immediatley, gee I bet there is a story hidden in here!!!! :-)

Well a few years ago we got hit 3 times in a row. Charlie was the worst! I had to fly home early from training in Texas and I sent my wife packing before I even got home so I was there alone. I sat with my back on the front door holding it in because the wind was blowing so hard it was pushing the top of the door and you could see light coming in. I was not happy and there was no sleep. The worst part was we didn't have power for 14 days after that. Plus the destruction it left behind! There were trees on top of houses, laying in the road and just debris everywhere. We even had the power line laying in our back yard...not cool!

If it's any comfort Matt, in my fifteen or so years here we've never truly been hit. Mostly all we get is rain and wind from hurricanes and pretty minor damage.

I didn't think there was such a thing as a weak cat 5. Inexperienced weatherman?

jhanic
09-07-2008, 07:31 AM
I think the definition of a category 5 hurricane is one in which the wind speed is more than 155 miles per hour, with no top limit. Maybe a "weak" cat 5 means one in which the speed is just that, whereas a "strong" cat 5 would be one with winds substantially higher.

Just my opinion, though.

John

As a resident of Florida I say 155 mph winds are nothing to sneeze at. No Pun Intended

Cat 5 = Get Out of Dodge!

I live in the Washington DC Metropolitan / Northern Virginia area and all we saw of Hannah was the rain and then more rain - and maybe a little wind. I have an inground pool and the normal water mark is about 8 inches from the top of the coping stones. After Hannah fizzled out the water in my pool was lapping over the coping stones - that's a lot of rainfall!

You should see some of the places around here still (2 weeks later) after Hannah left her mark on us. She sat on us for 3 whole days, and there is still water on the ground.

Today, 1999:

Stephen King wrote in his journal. Stephen and his son Owen stayed at the Hyatt Harborside in Boston and attended 'Hurly Burly' with King's other son Joe. The previous night Stephen had a nightmare and had written the words, 'Baby Mordred, like something out of a Chas Addams cartoon' and '6/19/99. O Discordia'

Year unknown:
Robert Browning pens 'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came'.

This is one of my favorite pics (from a BDN article 1982) it was taken around this time of year, and at that time, they were still having "open house" for Halloween.

If you've ever seen the pics of his little home office with "word processor" -it was located on the 2nd floor over the front portico (where the 3 windows are)

Halloween always makes me wanna run over to West Broadway and snap a bunch of picture like a foo' ;>

I still have VHS video of the house from 1989-92, it sure has changed a lot between the growth of the trees shrubs and the fence work. Don't know if anyone is remotely interested in it, but I would rip it and toss it up on YT.

Apart from the bat and cobweb stuff work in the fence, the house itself looks a bit creepy to me. This feeling might be in part from various American haunted house type films, (and the black and white photo). A great looking house.

25th Anniversary of the release of "Stand By Me"
Stand by Me-Film Released in the United States (1986)

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_movies_blog/2011/08/stand-by-me-turns-25-today.html

So, where were you when you saw “Stand By Me”? It was a watershed movie, in a lot of ways. People remember seeing it, remember what place in life they were in when they caught Rob Reiner’s breakthrough adaptation of a Stephen King story, that moment when River Phoenix became a star and Wil Wheaton seemed destined for stardom.

It came out 25 years ago today.

I caught it at the Colony Twin in Grand Forks, ND, and I remember because it was the first time it hit me, “Old people are watching so much TV they can’t tell the diff in the theater and just yak and yak and yak.” First time I can remember getting up and yelling at AARP peeps. Not yelling, but saying, “You are not in the den, this is not on the TV, please stop talking.”

Rob Reiner showed his latest film, the under-appreciated “Flipped” at the AARP convention in Orlando late last summer, so not that much has changed.

Kieifer Sutherland and River P. were the only kids to come out of that movie with careers. Sutherland has managed a nice career, with ups and down, in the intervening years. River? Not so much. Not the case for Wil Wheaton, either.

I met River a few times over the next few years — he was always wired, wound up. I never thought much of the fact that they had to stick him in interviews paired up with Dan Aykroyd (“Sneakers” just to keep him under control. “High on life,” I figured, innocently. Kid was obviously high on something.

I interviewed Corey Feldman a few years back when he did a Z-grade horror picture here in the Big O. got mad because I gave away his co-star’s true age, as I recall.

Many of us had given up on ever seeing another “great” Stephen King adaptation when this came out — too many “Maximum Overdrives” and not enough “Carries” or “Shinings.”

We’ve had “Misery” (Rob Reiner again) and “The Shawshank Redemption” since. So it’s not the writer. Necessarily. “Christine” and “Pet Sematary” notwithstanding.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Stand By Me” came out the same summer. Were there two movies that came out this summer that we’ll be talking about 25 years hence? I doubt it.

Where were you when you saw “Stand By Me?”

I always wondered why a "Grand Ball" would be held on a Wednesday night (8/29/1945)?
If everyone is rich, I suppose the party can be any night.

DTIII-After 5 hour session, King completes 'The Wastelands' manuscript. (1990)

Stephen King wrote in his journal. That night he completed 'The Wastelands' manuscript after a five hour session. It was over 800 pages long and King acknowledged that there were a few continuity glitches. As of that point in his career he felt the book was the high point.
