The numbers were never explained. Just one of the many frustrating things about that show.

I should know the Locke answer. I watched the entire series on DVD a couple of years ago. That's hours and hours of my life I'll never get back.

They both played Jonathan Brewster in made for TV movie versions of Arsenic and Old Lace, Karloff in 1962 and Gwynne in 1969, Karloff had played the role on stage during the production of the first film version in 1944 prohibiting him from doing the role in that film
