View Full Version : AutoGraph Magazine/Carlosdetweiller (Bob) interview

My brother-in-law is an autograph collector of a different kind, he likes and collects movie memoribillia, and he subscribes to a magazine devoted to the celebrity signature. He knows that I collect books myself and try when I can to get a signed copy, and of course my love for SK. So, in my mail today he sent me the new edition of such magazine (Jan) due to the fact that there was an article about SK and his signature. But the cool part is not only did they interview Stu from Betts, which would be a given I would think, but they also interviewed and have pictures of The Darktowers.com's own Carlosdetweiller(Bob)! Sorry, Bob if Im exposing you, but I thought it was very cool that you were included in that story. I will link the web site, but I didnt see the current issue on the site yet, but if you can pick up a copy its a very cool read.

The magazine is called Autograph, subtited connecting with the celebrity.

Edit: Sorry if this posted in the wrong section, feel free to fix it if needed.

I'll be interested in seeing it too! I didn't realize that it had already been published. I think it was Jon Reitan who gave my name to the writer Vince Liaguno. He seemed to be a nice guy who was really trying to do a good job on an article about collecting the works of King. He "interviewed" me through several e-mails and I tried to answer his questions as best I could. My only stipulation was that he couldn't make me sound like some sort of a crazed stalker. I hope the article reads OK.

Yes, I want one with an autograph... Better yet, one with an inscription so it'll be easier to authenticate later when the market gets flooded with fake Bob sigs.

My newest article for Autograph magazine just hit stands. From Bangor with Love: The Passion of Collecting King looks at the Stephen King collectibles market from the viewpoints of a professional autograph dealer, the owner of a dedicated Stephen King bookstore, and an avid private collector. Lots of cool pics of King signing for collectors, as well as an image of a letter from King at age 14 to legendary publisher Forest J. Ackerman asking him to consider a short story for publication --- thought to be the earliest King signature/collectible in the hands of a private collector. Lots of fun researching this one, and a special shout out to Jonathan Reitan who put me on the trail of two of the subjects interviewed for the piece. On sale now at Borders, Barnes & Noble, and other bookstores. Teaser for the 6-page article online (http://autographmagazine.com/tabid/77/itemid/98/From-Bangor-with-Love-The-Passion-of-Collecting-K.aspx)

This is the photo that, I think, is used in the article.

It is the cover letter to a short story that King sent to Forrest J. Ackerman in 1961 or 1962. Ackerman was the editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine but he was also the editor of Spacemen magazine and it was to Spacemen that King sent the story.

I believe that this letter accompanied a short story called "The Killer" which eventually was published by Ackerman in Famous Monsters of Filmland #202, Spring, 1994. The original 1 page typescript is reprinted. I don't know who owns the typescript.

The cover letter was auctioned in 1987 as part of a massive auction of Ackerman's collection in New York by Guernsey's. The catalog is now collectible and available on ABE. I think the letter was initially purchased by the late John McLaughlin. I bought it about five years ago from Stuart Schiff in a lot of several other letters.

There's no loop in the 'S' and the 'G' is off...a pretty obvious forgery by Ackerman if you ask me, trying to glom on King's fame after the fact...haha...

I wish I'd been able to go with the photo/document researcher when he visited Bob earlier this year!

I was VERY happy that he decided to come to Amarillo to do the photography in person and in my basement. We had talked a couple of times over the preceding weeks/months about my taking some of the items to a place like Kinko's for reproduction or to a professional photographer. I was so much more comfortable not having to take the stuff off site. It went well and I am really looking forward to seeing how the finished book comes out.

There is going to be some pretty good stuff reproduced in the book.

Not related to Bob but about "supercollectors" : in TENEBRES 11/12, a french book by Dreampress, there are interviews (in french) of Charlie Fried & Betts.

With all due respect Shannon, you are a wild card. You buy like crazy one month, and sell most of it the next. I was asking a serious question and your 'FLASH OF THE MOMENT" expertise is not required or solicited, thank you. Don't mean to sound harsh, but sometimes you kinda force it. Sorry!!!

Shannon
08-16-2011, 12:05 AM
Don't mean to sound harsh, but go fuck yourself, friend.

I sold items to five people that wanted them, how does that immediately disqualify me as a source of knowledge? Am I disqualified because I have only been collecting for less than a year? Does collecting for a short length of time always equal less knowledge than his or her peers? I have helped out Tomas with some info for the StephenKingCollector website. I have helped out Jerome from time to time with corrections to the Catalog that is used as THE unofficial reference guide for all collectors. I will also be shortly heading up a Short Works subsection to the Catalog that will further assist every collector that wishes to collect the first appearance of all of Stephen King's short works. I am a fan of Stephen King and a student of Stephen King Collecting. It is not only my hobby but my obsession. If my opinion means nothing to you, that is fine. My post may come off as jokey, but that's because of how I had viewed yours and my banter back and forth as a showing of friendship. Let me be a little bit more professional for you.

Bob has more total items than Betts Bookstore, the Stephen King Collector's STORE, and he has unique QUALITY items that no one will ever be able obtain including popular original artwork and rare one-of-a-kind publishing promos. A lot of his items have been photographed and scanned so that us normal collectors could have a chance to see them.

It all depends on the definition of "supercollector", but by MY definition, and I'm sure by others' as well, he is.

Next time you speak to someone in a public forum in such a rude way, please think twice. I do not want an apology, I'm simply going to change how I speak and interact with you in future settings.

Shannon

I think Carlos has one of (if not THE) the biggest collections of unique King materials in existence. That's why I recommended him to the documents specialist from becker&mayer when we were putting together The Stephen King Illustrated Companion.

biomieg

Bob does not present himself to the public as one of the 'supercollectors' (and I admire his modesty) but he is probably the supercollector (like Bev says). I remember reading something about the Betts Bookstore signing (in '98?) and the media attention that was given to the presence of several collectors (Bob, Charlie Fried and Chris Cavalier, maybe some others?) at the event. These are the guys that people usually refer to when they talk about supercollectors but I think most of them have since sold their collections.

Currently, Bob is still there and I think Hutch would also qualify as a supercollector. Mike Pasiuk as well, IMO.

Patrick
08-16-2011, 03:21 PM
I agree with the three prior responses that Bob is one of the supercollectors, by anyone's standards. Personally I always think of Hutch as well.

My understanding is also that Charlie Fried and Chris Cavalier are former supercollectors.

I've been away from the internet for a week. Just got back today and starting to get caught up with the posts I have missed. I guess I am considered one of the bigger collectors of King material. I have been at it for what seems like a very long time (nearly 30 years) and have taken very few breaks in collecting. For some reason I have never lost interest in the hobby and enjoy it as much or more today as in the past.
