Welcome to the Official Oscar Contest Thread.

Rules

Copy the list below and highlight who you think will win (not who you want) and repost it.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, who ever has the closest number without going over is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have a few months until Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions. I still have films to watch, buzz to follow and articles to read.

Somebody has to take Heather down. She's won 4 years in a row (there was a 3 way tie in 2012 between me, Heather and Ricky.) I, for one, am tired of playing the role of the Buffalo Bills. I've come in second to Heather all 3 years, besides of course 2012.

Golden Globes are this sunday. Can't wait to watch them. I also need to get to watching some of the films. What I hate is that most of them are released in limited theaters right beforehand, so I never get to see alot of them prior to the awards shows. I really wish the studios would do something about this. There's been many films in the past that had earlier releases and done just fine.

So true, Heather. I wish more studios would go the VOD route with their films. I'd be more than willing to fork over 7 bucks to watch for 12 Years A Slave at home.

Films like that should really think about that.

There were a number of films nominated at the Globes that I had never even heard of. Either I'm completely out of the loop or were there some that haven't even had a limited release yet?

I never thought of VOD, but that would be a great way for small films to be seen. And the more people that see them prior to the award ceremonies, I think would give the films an even bigger push.

Yeah, there were a bunch of movies that haven't gotten a wide release yet, or just came and went. Kate Winslett was nominated for Labor Day, a film that doesn't get a wide release until another week or two I think.

The Globes are never a great way to predict the Oscars because they split the movie categories into comedy and drama. I think it's safe to say that 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle are the front runners for Best Picture. No surprise there, we kind of knew that already. I think it's clear now that Matthew McConaughey is the leader for Best Actor. He's really hot right now. Then again DiCaprio could come on strong and steal it. I was a little surprised he won the Globe.

It looks like Cate Blanchett is the leader for Best Actress. I thought Sandy B was going to be the front runner, but it looks like it's Blanchett now. Although watch out for Amy Adams. She's been nominated so many times in her young career but has yet to win. She took home the Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. That should help.

I think Jared Leto is a lock for Best Supporting Actor and I'm starting to think J-Law is going to win her second Oscar in a row.

In the directing side of things, I think Alfonso Cuaron will be considered the front runner. The directing category should be especially interesting come Thursday when Oscar nominations are released. If you remember, last year turned the category on its head when Affleck, Bigelow and Hooper were all snubbed. Should be interesting.

Yeah, last years picks for director were bizarre. And while I haven't seen his movie yet I'd love to see Leo win an Oscar. I think he's highly underrated and just seems to be getting stronger and stronger. But I'd also be extremely surprised because the Oscars don't seem to be a fan of his. Honestly I'll be surprised if he even gets nominated, but maybe his Globe win will help. The Oscars kind of irritate me in a sense because its always the same group that gets nominated year after year, regardless of the film they're in.

It does seem like 12 Years and Hustle seem to be the frontrunners for BP. Then again, this time last year I never would've thought that Argo would've won (I still don't think it deserved to).

I don't know how I feel about Sandra winning Best Actress. She was great and carried the film (pretty much) by herself, but I think the script didn't give her as much to do as it could've. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing Cuaron winning for director. Gravity is my favorite film from this past year.

That, in addition to horror films always getting snubbed. :(

Wow, a very interesting morning. It's clear to me now that 2013 was another strong year in film. Packed with tons of great performances for A-List actors and newcomers alike. There were a few surprises for the actors that got nominated, but more surprises for the ones that didn't get nominated. I suppose this was inevitable considering how strong of a year it was for actors, especially in the lead category. Actually, that seems like a good place to start.

I'm shocked to see Tom Hanks get snubbed for not one, but two movies (Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks) I thought he was a lock for at least one nom. I think it surprises a lot of people that Robert Redford wasn't nominated. Leading to today, many people expected the 77-year-old actor to pick up his first acting nomination since 1974 (The Sting). I'm also surprised Joaquin Phoenix (Her) didn't get nominated. I'm starting to wonder if his attitude toward the Academy is starting to hurt him. At least when it comes down to a strong category filled with other deserving actors.

In the Best Actress category, Meryl Streep continues to get unconditional love from the Academy. Saving Mr. Banks continues to get snubbed as Emma Thompson, a virtual lock many thought, is left without a nomination.

I'm not sure I'd call it a snub, but I really wanted Daniel Bruhl to get nominated for Rush. The film didn't really connect with audiences and kind of disappeared. I never thought Wil Forte would get nominated. I must say though, Jonah Hill picking up his second Oscar nomination is quite a surprise. He's certainly deserving, I just never would have thought he'd be a 2 time Oscar nominee after watching films like Supebad and Knocked Up. Two films I love, but didn't think he'd be that kind of actor.

Best Supporting Actress was pretty standard. I didn't think Oprah deserved a nomination. You have to do a movie more than every 20 years for me to pay attention.

The overall snubbing of Inside Llewyn Davis was also surprising. No Best Picture nomination, no Best Actor nomination for Oscar Isaac, no Best Director nomination for the Coen brothers. Not even a nomination for best song. Davis seemed like one of those films that was bred for Oscar season. I'm not sure what happened.

I'm also surprised about Her. It gets nominated for Best Picture, but not directing nom for Jonze or and acting nom for Phoenix. Jonze did pick up an Original Screenplay nomination.

Some other odds and ends: I'm a little surprised Monsters U didn't get nominated in the animated category. I'm surprised Blackfish didn't get nominated for Best Documentary. It seems like that film has been getting a lot of attention lately.

It's not all bad news, I'm really happy about most of the nominations. Especially Leo for Wolf of Wall Street. I feel he's been snubbed by Oscar in the past. He's more than deserving. I'm rooting hard for Amy Adams who has 4 Oscar nominations in her young career. This is her first in a leading role and she is going up against some Oscar stalwarts in Dench, Streep, Blanchett, and Bullock. I'm also happy that Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa got a nomination for Best Makeup. The makeup really is great in that movie. Glad it got recognized.

Okay, that's enough for now. Once the contest actually begins, you can copy and past the list above and highlight who you think will win. It should be fun over the next few months discussing some of these films, especially once more people get a chance to see them.

Stay tuned in this very thread. I have a stance I'm taking against Oscar that I'm interested in getting your thoughts on. It's time for Oscar to change a little.

I agree, which makes this a perfect time to talk about what's been bothering me about the Oscars more and more every year. A few years ago, they changed the rules to allow up to 10 films to get nominated. A change that wasn't that drastic considering this is how it once was. My question is, why stop there?

Why not expand the acting categories along with the directing categories? I don't see any reason why allowing more than five great actors to be nominated for Best Actor is such a bad thing. Film has evolved since the first Oscar ceremony. There are more films per year than ever before. It only makes sense for the categories to expand.

I just think it's a natural progression. If we are going to honor up to 10 films, why not honor up to 10 directors as well as actors? Thoughts?

Dallas Buyers Club looks really good. I'm not interested in the rest. Except maybe Nebraska. That could be interesting in a quiet kind of way.

Feev, I know what you're saying about time constraints. They're always worried about that stuff. I don't think it will add a whole lot of time onto the show. How long does it take to list 4 or 5 more names? It's not like they show clips. Most of the time they cut those too.

I'd hate to say it, it might be time to cut categories (when I say cut I don't mean get rid of the award, just don't give it away live). I'm mainly talking about Best Short Film Live Action and Best Short Film Documentary. These are typically two categories 99% of the audience hasn't even seen the nominees. There's no place to even find them without digging around the internet. I respect anybody who gets nominated in those categories, but they're too obscure for mainstream audiences.

Now, if the Academy would make the available to the public somehow, I would be more than happy to watch.

Then it'll turn into the Grammys. I have a huge pet peeve with those awards as only a small fraction of awards are shown, and those are usually ones I don't even care about. I never even watch them anymore. So honestly I would hate it if they cut anything from the Oscars. There's not that many categories so it'd be weird if they cut one or two out. Also I like that there's only 5 nominations. I actually wish they would go back to just 5 for films. I know they had more nominations in the past but to me it just feels like a money making ploy. I think if you increase the amount of nominations then it lessens the others. It's an honor to get nominated. Of course there will be those times when it's a really strong year for film and people or films get snubbed, and then also the opposite where it's weak and films get nominated that wouldn't otherwise. That said, I think I've mentioned my complaints above. But the Oscars are progressively getting me more and more irritated over the past few years. I wish they would broaden their horizons when it comes to their nominations. It's almost the same circle every time.

They should cut shit no one really cares about. Best costume design, anyone?

I hear you, but it's important to the costume designers and to the films, right?

Well there is one thing that annoys me about the oscars. The show no love for Horror films at all...except for one category and that is maybe special effects and only one time did they win.....(American Werewolf in London). If you are going to have an awards show about movies consider all of them not just the thought provoking ones or have a category for horror films.

Now that is a great idea. Maybe they should have a "Best Picture" for every genre instead of just one.

Agreed. There's a certain type of film they go for and rarely go outside that. Just because it's horror movie, doesn't make it a bad movie.

Horror films don't get any love because most of them are crap. Comedies rarely get any love too. Most of them are also crap. I'd be all for genre specific categories, but where do you stop?

As far as expanding the acting categories, they wouldn't be forced to nominate 10 actors. In years that are light, only the deserving actors would get nominated. There would be a percentage taken just like Best Picture. So it wouldn't necessarily have to be 10 actors every year. Some years it would be 6, some years it would be 7.

I also understand what you're saying about the same old crew getting noms, but they are all giving solid performances. They deserve it. That being said, there are a bunch of first time nominees this year. Ejiofor, Abdi, Squibb, Hawkins, Nyong'o are all first timers. Dern has been around forever, but hasn't been nominated since 1979. This is also Leto's first nomination. He's been around for a little while, but disappeared from Hollywood for almost 5 years.

So I think there's just enough new faces to keep things interesting.

I'm also surprised Joaquin Phoenix (Her) didn't get nominated.

I'm also surprised about Her. It gets nominated for Best Picture, but not directing nom for Jonze or and acting nom for Phoenix.

Some other odds and ends: I'm a little surprised Monsters U didn't get nominated in the animated category.

I was super surprised that Her was nominated for BP. I thought it might get something for the screenplay, but not BP. If there was anything about the film that deserved a nom., though, it was Joaquin, who definitely deserved it. But I think you may be right about his attitude getting in the way of that.

Another big surprise for me was a lack of Monsters University, too. Hopefully its absence will give Frozen the win it deserves. (I also feel like that Pixar movies tend to be nominated just because they're Pixar, so it makes me happy that this isn't the case this year.)

Dammit, now I have to watch a lot of movies I don't really want to. :(

Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club, Blue Jasmine, and Philomena; I'm looking at you.

I thought the same thing this morning.

I totally agree, Heather. When they first expanded the amount of BPs allowed, I liked it and thought it made sense to open up the category. But now it seems like it's just serving the purpose of showcasing what other members of the Academy picked as their favorites. Looking at the nominees the past few years (today, too), it's obvious what films won't win BP: Philomena, Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club, etc. Like you said, if there were only 5 slots for BP, would any of these end up nominated? I doubt it.

Still Servant
01-16-2014, 05:54 PM
Well, you guys are both totally right about the way BP has gone in recent years. The idea behind expanding the BP category was to allow more mainstream films to be nominated, which in turn would bring in a bigger audience to the telecast. That has seemed to backfire. Like you said, it's the smaller films that have wiggled their way in instead.

The few exceptions have been District 9, Inception, and Avatar. I guess you could consider films like Up and Toy Story 3 as films that probably wouldn't have gotten nominated if it wasn't for the expanded category.

The academy is extremely rigid when it comes to genre. Something I find rather archaic considering how many films are blurring the lines between genres these days.

Take The Dark Knight for instance. A fantastic crime thriller that was expertly, and meticulously crafted, yet the academy decided to not give it any love since it was a "comic book movie".

01-17-2014, 03:59 PM
True. I don't think they ever release any official stats on the subject, but from what I hear, Dark Knight was really close to getting a Best Picture nomination. I think they have to change in a bunch of ways actually.

There's no reason why Scarlett Johansson shouldn't receive more consideration for her voice work in Her. Don't even get me started how Andy Serkis should have been nominated for Lord of the Rings.

Best Picture Nominees:

“12 Years a Slave”
“American Hustle”
“Captain Phillips”
“Dallas Buyers Club”
“Gravity”
“Her”
“Nebraska”
“Philomena”
“The Wolf of Wall Street”

I need to view "Her" and Philomena"

Having not seen 2 of the movies, my favorite is "Gravity".
My prediction (non-binding at this time) is "12 Years A Slave"

Mattrick
01-18-2014, 02:24 PM
I predict that Her/Gravity and American Hustle will be the big winners with 4-5 oscars each. Gravity will take technical oscars. American Hustle/Her I think are pick em odds for Production Design and Original Screenplay. American Hustle will get 1 or 2 acting Oscars. Predicting either Her or American Hustle will take best picture, though I have not seen the rest I just can't seem be that good. Even Gravity as great as it was wasn't as good. Captain Phillips tonight. Saving Marty for last. Also going to watch Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight since Before Midnight has an oscar nomination for Adapted Screenplay and I've put off watch them long enough as I hear they are amazing. Hopefully I can find some of the foreign film nominees but those are usually very difficult. Even amour was difficult and it had a best picture nomination.

Well, since some people are already posting their Oscar predictions, I guess now would be a good time to post the official rules. I also ask the Mods to change the name of the thread to "The Official 2014 Oscar Contest Thread." Thank you.

This is the fifth year I'm running the Oscar contest. We had 7 participants last year, which is good, but we can do better. I'm hoping to build on that this year. Don't forget to tell your other DT.org friends to come on over and submit their predictions. All are welcome. We always have a lot of fun predicting the winners and seeing who comes out on top. It's just for fun.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess. For those of you who have access to time machines or have the ability to alter time and space, you will not be allowed to participate in this contest. Fuck you time traveler.

Good luck and have fun.

I've got to alter my strategy and not take a few dark horses but at the same time, I took Ang Lee last year and I doubt many people did and he won. I just can't go againt a sure, sure bet like I did with Day-Lewis last year. I'm great at picking things like Production Design, Cinematography and Editing but sometimes the acting ones can be so subjective it's hard for me not to pick my favourite and think like the Academy.

I hope Jolie's film as a director is better than her acting career...yipes, she didn't make a good film for a long, long time...though I never saw Eastwood's Changeling which is the only thing she's done in a decade I'd care to see.

Well, she's off to a shaky start as a director too. Her first film, In the Land of Blood and Honey, was critically panned.

Heather's right, Changeling was a good film and she was very strong in it. I think she was nominated for an Oscar. I think the odd name of the film turned people off. Eastwood had a streak of directing films with weird names. Invictus is the other. I also loved her in Girl, Interrupted. She had a small role in The Good Shepherd, for which she was also good.

Unfortunately, she chose the the big budget action route. Not sure why she couldn't do both. That being said, I thought Wanted was entertaining. Even though it was nothing like the graphic novel.

Should be interesting to see her in Maleficent.

Very strange. No offense, but hasn't it been known that people have lobbied for votes in the past, or am I mistaken?

That's what I always thought. I guess the guy that urged people to listen to the song was part of the Academy and is a voter. I still find it hard to believe he's the only one that's ever done that.

Also, thanks, Merlin! That's great.

Don't thank me. Thank, "Oscar" and Mr. King!!!

That's for sure. I can imagine that Her would have to be one of the worst "first date" movies around. Talk about awkward.

There were a few old people in the theater when I saw Her. I could have sworn they were going to walk out after that scene, but they stayed.

This is the Official 2014 Oscar Contest Thread. This is where we can talk all things Oscar. As we get closer to the show, more people will post their predictions. There's no rush in that department. Most people are still watching movies or waiting to hear more predictions as we get closer.

I'm REALLY interested to hear your thoughts on Wolf. Unfortunately, I have a hunch that you might not enjoy it. My theory behind this is that you don't really like Goodfellas and the Wolf kind of feels like that film. It's mainly because of the voiceover. I hope I'm wrong though.

My picks are in bold. Let the games begin!!

Went to see the nominated animated shorts this past weekend.

Get a Horse - Starts off as an old school Mickey Mouse cartoon which gets brought into the current day. I quite enjoyed it. Reminded me a lot of the cartoons that I grew up watching.

Mr. Humblot - Really liked the animation in this one, and a cute story.

Feral - Definitely my least favorite of the bunch. Too artsy for even me. Funny thing is the whole time I was wondering how on earth this even got nominated, but turns out it was my boyfriends favorite. Go figure

Possessions - Eh, it was ok, but nothing spectacular.

Room on the Broom - My favorite of the bunch. It was a cute story and funny. However that said, I didn't care for the animation at all. I really miss old school animation, nowadays it's all computer and I'm not a fan.

Overall I was a bit disappointed. I've seen many great animated short films in the past, and all of these just fell a bit short for me. I imagine there must be better ones out there, they just probably didn't get the attention, or have a big studio backing them.

Get a Horse was the short that played before Frozen. I thought it was really good. A nice mix of old and new.

How much did it cost to see these? All together, they couldn't have been more than 30 minutes total.

$7.75, actually the runtime was 110 min I believe. They also showed 3 other critically acclaimed shorts along with these. And they interspersed the stories with some animals that were dressed up and telling funny jokes, almost like they were introducing the films at the Oscars or something. Most of the shorts were around 13min each, except for Room on the Broom which was at least 30min.

Gravity - 8

My Locks:

Technical awards (Sound Editing/Mixing, Visual Effects): These are obviously going to Gravity and the fact they even nominated anyone else was kind of the Academy.

Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto had his name on this thing the moment Dallas Buyers Club premiered. Johan Hill is also very deserving but Leto has this.

Cinematography/Director: While I loved what Nebraska and Prisoners did, Gravity will be this years Life of Pi and take Director/Cinematography.

Long Shots:

Her: I thought this was the best film of the year and I take it for best picture because if Gravity is this years Life of Pi, Her could be this years Argo (no director nom for Jonze) and take Screenplay/Best Picture. I doubt it will win production design but through and through it's the most creative of all the nominations. It's score is very minimalist which is why I picked it but I won't be surprised to see Alexandre Desplat take it for Philomena's terrific score.

DiCaprio: Everyone seems set on McConaghey these past few weeks but I have to take DiCaprio, he gave what might be his best performance which was everything I loved about him in The Aviator but even moreso. It's been 20 years since he was nominated for Gilbert Grape and DiCaprio after 20 years of not winning wins tonight.

Dench: While I think Blanchette was phenomonal in Blue Jasmine and was my original pick to win I just think there was a certain quality to Dench's work in Philomena that was very endearing.

I get what you're going for there, but the biggest difference between Her and Argo is that Argo had massive mainstream appeal. It's a film that even average movie goers saw and enjoyed. Her just isn't like that. It has its niche audience. For that reason alone, it won't win.

Wow. The list of nominees made me realize just how little I was able to go to the theater this past year. I have not watched any of these movies (minus a couple animated ones). I definitely will watch the Academy Awards but I don't have anything to go off of to make any predictions. Oh well. One day my son will be able to watch movies with me and then we can go (or at least he can stay at home by himself.)

Well, another Oscar show is in the books. I enjoyed the show. No real surprises, but it was a decent show. I will give my full thoughts tomorrow, for 'tis getting late. Without further adieu. The envelope please...

The winner...and still champion, Heather with an amazing score of 22, the highest score since we started this competition. She only got 2 wrong. I don't know how you do it. I thought Ricky and I had great scores, but it just wasn't enough. Any other year, it would have been. You are truly the queen of Oscar. Congrats.

Sweet  Next year I'm aiming for a perfect score.

Go figure the one that would give me trouble was the animated short category, which is what I went to see  Although I will say, I think Mr. Hublot was deserving of the win. And I knew I should have picked Lupita for supporting actress. She was easily the front-runner, and I should have known they wouldn't give it to Jennifer Lawrence two years in a row, but I just couldn't vote against her.

I think last year and especially this year were very predictable as to who was going to win. Really the only surprise of the night for me was the animated short category. I really wish that there was more suspense and surprises throughout the night.

And I agree about Ellen. I thought she did a wonderful job of hosting the Oscars.

Hmmm, you have me curious as well. I think the Academy definitely has their favorites. Leo is long overdue for a win. I just don't think they like him for some reason. Granted I've seen neither his film or Matthew's so I can't judge who had a better performance, but my personal preference is that Leo is a stronger actor. Was he even nominated for The Departed?

You said it. I think you should take the black and head to the wall. Do not pass Go, do not collect 200 dollars.

Anyway, I don't know about everybody else, but I always suffer from the after Oscar blues. I look forward to the show all year and spend the better half of the last few months consuming every film I can that might be nominated for an Oscar. Oscar night is a lot of fun. I love watching people get recognized for some of my favorite films of the year. Then there is just this let down. I look at the films in theaters now, and there's nothing that excites me. This time of year is just a dumping ground.

I thought the show was enjoyable. Ellen did a nice job. I'm not a huge Ellen fan, she's a little too tame for my tastes. She did have a few nice jokes early that had some bite to them. I just wish she would have done some more creative things. I would have liked to see a pre-taped bit or something. I'm not a huge fan of the "in the audience" segments. I think they can be very hit or miss.

As for the actual awards. Leading up to the show, all the experts said it was going to be the closest Oscar races in all the categories in years. While I agree that all the categories were particularly strong this year, they were all pretty much locked up before the show even started. Except for Best Picture, which was between two films.

I have no problem with 12 Years A Slave winning. It wasn't my favorite film of the year, but it had everything the Academy loves. I knew months ago after seeing the trailer that it would be a front runner. I'm happy for McConaughey, I think he's really hot right now. I'm loving his performance in True Detective as well. I think we have a really interesting story developing with Leo. It's going to be very interesting in the coming years to see if he finally wins an Oscar. Stay tuned.

It should be interesting to see what Leto does from here. He clearly has talent, kind of makes me wonder why it took him this long to utilize it. As for Lupita, I don't want to sound like a Debbie Downer, but Lupita's career peaked last night and it will be downhill from here. I hope she proves me wrong, but I don't make the rules. Hollywood is not exactly kind to young, African American women. I can't wait to see what kind of path she chooses in the wake of hear Best Supporting Actress award.

Well, this was a lot of fun, guys. Heather won again, we gave it our best shot and a few of us came close, she was just better last night. That being said, why on Earth did you not pick Lupita, Heather? :P

Good point. I'll clarify. Why hasn't he utilized it since 2002? Don't say it's because he went to pursue a music career. He made a few average movies before having the roles dry up in the mid-2000's. Obviously, he wasn't getting the scripts he wanted and decided to do something different. Hopefully there's more to come.

That being said, why on Earth did you not pick Lupita, Heather? :P

Jennifer was my wildcard spot. If there was going to be any surprises that night, I thought that'd be the one.

This year was filled with so many movies that honestly I could really care less about. I have no desire to see 12 Years a Slave, Captain Philips, Philomenia or Dallas Buyers Club. Even Nebraska doesn't interest me too much. The only ones I'm wanting to watch that I have yet to see are Gravity and Wolf of Wall Street. And out of the two I have seen, I absolutely loved Her, but hated American Hustle. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd like to see more films with a wider appeal get some nominations.

I think I'm the complete opposite of your view, Heather. I think this was one of the strongest years in terms of Best Picture nominees. Ironically, though, most of them I didn't expect to like, but they blew me away.

Way back in 2013, pre-Oscars buzz, Captain Phillips and Gravity didn't interest me at all (Gravity especially. I actually laughed at the trailer in the theater). I only saw them because they were nominated for Best Picture, and I am glad that I did. I really liked Captain Phillips and Gravity ended up being my favorite movie of 2013.

Philomena and Blue Jasmine (not BP-nominated, though) I didn't really know about pre-Oscars, but was really impressed with both.

I just enjoyed so many good films this Oscar season, and can't remember a past year's nominees that made me enjoy (or be excited from) film as much.

(I still haven't seen Nebraska or 12 Years a Slave.)

This still somewhat pertains to the Oscars, so I will put it here.

Matthew McConaughey just won his first Oscar after putting together a great year with a small, but memorable role in The Wolf of Wall Street. A great performance in Mud and of course his Oscar winning performance in The Dallas Buyers Club where he literally transformed himself. That's just on the big screen. As we speak, McConaughey is turning in a powerhouse performance on a weekly basis on HBO's True Detective. His Emmy is surely already being carved.

McConaughey's rise from rom-com purgatory, to awards season staple even has its own name - mcconaissance. With all that being said, it didn't just happen over night. McConaughey has put together a bunch of strong performances that deserve some attention.

If I had to pinpoint a film where Matt started his rise, it would be 2008's Tropic Thunder. That's right, a comedy. McConaughey plays Ben Stiller's cooky agent that will stop at nothing to get his client TiVo. You could make a case that Matt already had a mcconaissance back in 2011. He turned to familiar ground as a lawyer in the criminally underrated Lincoln Lawyer. 2011 also included to Indy films. Bernie, where Matt turns in another strong supporting character performance and Killer Joe. In Killer Joe, McConaughey does some of his best work in years.

Now that McConaughey is hot, I hope people will go back and watch some of these films. McConaughey's rise didn't happen over night. It's been a few years of smart script choices and strong performances.
