Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Heather! And what'd you think about The Spiral Staircase (you saw the old one, right?)? I thought I would end up liking it much better than I did.

I'll see if I can keep this list going. Last year was the closest I'd got to keeping it up but I hated doing it on my phone and didn't really have a PC and always forgot what I'd watched between updates so I said screw it around July/August

2014:

American Hustle
The Naked Gun: Files From Police Squad (RW)

So did I. I was a little disappointed because I thought it was going to be a lot better.

Yeah, I got really bad with updating the list at around July of last year and I ended up just saying fuck it. Hopefully I'll be much better at that this year. Same with my movie reviews.

I plan on making American Hustle my first 2014 film.

I just thought it was a new and interesting twist on a genre that has been over-saturated in recent years. I ranked Warm Bodies #2 on my most underrated films of 2013. Here is an excerpt from my list:

The zombie genre has really blown up over the past few years and maybe people are just exhausted by it now. Warm Bodies is a new twist on the genre though.

A coming-of-age zombie story that has more romance and comedy than most romantic comedies. Warm Bodies did okay at the box office, bringing in 66 million dollars, but it should have been even better.

Nicholas Hoult plays R, a zombie with a heart, he just can't express his feelings. On the outside, he looks like a zombie, but the person he was before is still inside. Soon he meets Julie, and something begins to stir in his body. Is it possible he could be human again?

What transpires is very much like the story to Romeo & Juliet. Many of the best scenes deals with R trying to awkwardly get to know Julie. Many of the scenes deal with normal problems of any teenage boy.

BTW - I loved Warm Bodies. I got a signed copy of the book when it was released and was so excited when I found out it was being made into a movie. Saw it opening night and the family and I had a great time. We now own the DVD too! I believe there will be another book or more if I'm not mistaken.

Ricky
01-18-2014, 08:46 AM
I liked it. I was really impressed with the first half and thought it was really unsettling in a way that most recent horror films aren't. Then when you figure out that Kevin Bacon is having those visions/hallucinations because of the girl that was killed in his house, it started feeling a little generic like I had seen it before.

I think I remember reading that they're going to make Insidious III, but without James Wan (I might be getting that confused with The Conjuring, though). And at the end, I thought that Elise was looking at the red-faced demon from the first movie, so if they make another, I think that'd be a good direction to go in since I thought it was much scarier/intriguing than the Parker Crane storyline.

Also, did you hear that they're moving forward with the Annabelle spin-off? :panic:

I've been wanting to watch it for 20 years, basically since it was nominated in 94. Watched it as soon as I had it lol, I wasn't waiting a minute longer. It's such an important film when you really think about it, in the sense that intelligence was a markettable attribute in the 50's and ever since then it just hasn't been so. Robert Redford has directed some damn good movies, that's for sure.

It definitely had some hilarious moments. Especially the ending. I couldn't stop laughing. I just wish they had condensed it down a bit, it was quite long.

Mike, how did you like Machete Kills?

Heather, I thought Machete Kills was pretty good. I didn't enjoy myself as much as I did while watching the first one though. Still a decent sequel.

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World is pretty long. It has so many great cameos in it. I think that's my favorite part. The film Rat Race is kind of a loose remake. It's no where near as good.

Did you like Blue Jasmine? I thought Cate Blanchette was fantastic.

Ricky
02-07-2014, 03:58 PM
I loved it. I really didn't know what it was about/what to expect (other than hearing that Cate was fantastic and Woody Allen directed), and was pleasantly surprised by it. Easily on of the best films I've seen in awhile. (I was all for Amy Adams winning at the Oscars, but Cate was really good.)

Also, on some other sites, I keep seeing reviews referring to it as a chick flick, which I don't understand. Female characters don't equal a "chick flick."

Mattrick
02-07-2014, 05:06 PM
I felt the same way...I thought it was Adams year but Blanchette was so damn good. The last scene in Blue Jasmine alone is enough to win her the oscar. Woody Allen kicks ass, every film of his I've watched I've loved and I know it's wrong to expect greatness every time I watch one of his films and based on the depth of his filmography there must be some average films. I've got Manhattan, Sleeper, Match Point and Vicky Christy Barcelona all sitting here to watch as well.

Ricky
02-07-2014, 05:10 PM
Midnight In Paris was the first film of his I saw (I think), and I loved that, too.

And I've had Match Point in my queue for awhile now, but didn't know it was Allen.

Still Servant
02-07-2014, 05:24 PM
I've never been a fan of Allen's work. I can see the greatness in it, but he's not my cup of tea. I actually thought Midnight in Paris was a tad overrated. McAdams' character was so unlikable it made me wonder what Wilson's character would have ever seen in her to begin with. Maybe I'm just not used to McAdams playing unlikable characters.

The only other Allen film I'd ever seen is Cassandra's Dream which is a film that is different than most of the other work in his career. I thought it was better than most people thought.

Mattrick
02-07-2014, 05:24 PM
Midnight in Paris was my first too. Since then I've watched Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Mighty Aphrodite and Blue Jasmine. The amount of films he's directed is insane...he's the Elton John of directing.

He did Cassandra's Dream, too?! Well, guess I've seen three of his movies then.

(And I really liked McAdams in Midnight In Paris specifically because she played an unlikeable character. It was a nice departure from her more usual "romantic" roles, I thought.)

Good to hear. I'm glad you both enjoyed it. I'm assuming this is the kind of animated film where there are tons of laughs for kids but also tons of laughs that only the adults will get. This seems like the case for most animated films anyway.

Exactly. My son has a more mature sense of humor since he's an only child and we probably treat him too much like an adult. There were quite a few kids there but most of the audience was adult or older kids. I would definitely see it again.

Heather, I just realized that you asked me if I liked Stoker in the "2013 Thread" way back in January. I never went back in there, so I didn't notice it.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. I thought it had real style. I loved the whole look of the film and the fashion. I thought Mia Wasikowska did a nice job too. I got a real Carrie vibe from her. I'm a big fan of Chan-wook Park's work. Oldboy is one of my favorite foreign films. I hope he gets to do more American films.

Lookwhoitis, I have so many questions for you. Do you go to Sundance every year? How was The Raid 2? I loved the first one. How was The Battered Bastards of Baseball? What was your favorite film? Can I go with you next year? That's it for now.

Agreed, I've always wanted to head out to it. How was Dead Snow 2? As good as the first, or is it one where they should have never made a sequel?

Mike, really glad you enjoyed Stoker. I loved the style to that film. Maybe I need to give Oldboy another shot.

Count me in as a huge Chan Wook Park Fan too! I first saw Oldboy at Sundance and was blown away! I also really dug Stoker. He really is one of the leading stars of the Korean New Wave. He reminds me a lot of Kubrick, in how he uses psychological tension in his films. I need to see Joint Security Area which was one of the first films that really got him famous, plus do a triple feature and watch the whole Vengeance trilogy in a row.

Lookwhoitis, I have so many questions for you.

Do you go to Sundance every year?
I have been for ten out of the last 11 years. I go and work as a volunteer, which is how Sundance staffs a large portion of their labor for the festival. I get perks such as lodging in a ski condo and a credential that helps get me into the events and screenings. It is a heck of an experience.

How was The Raid 2? I loved the first one. The Raid 2: Berendal was MINDBLOWING. Best martial arts picture I have ever seen. Gareth Evans is a real talent to watch as a director. I am guessing we will see him helming some giant budget action pic soon. The Raid 2 was amazing. Just the creativity of some of the shots in the film (the car chase, falling down the stairs) and the execution and quality of practical effects in the movie were unbelievable. I mean i really saw things on screen in this film that I have never seen before. I wanted to see this film so bad that I got up at the crack of dawn to wait in line early in the morning after working till 2am. It was wholly worth it. Evans and cast were in attendance and I heard the star, Iko Uwais, was doing live pencak silat demos at some of the Q&As (although he didn't at the screening I was at, must've been too early in the morning) Take my word for it, when you see the Raid 2, you are going to get the fishmouth. :0 My favorite scene: the Prison free for all riot in the mud pit.

How was The Battered Bastards of Baseball? This doc was a great story. Particularly because I had never heard of the Portland Mavericks before. I am not the biggest baseball fan, but do love sports and the story was interesting and engaging. If you are a baseball or sports fan you will probably be engaged by it. For those who haven't heard of it, this doc shows the history of the independent minor league ball club that Bing Russell (Kurt Russell's dad and Deputy Clem on Bonanza) built in Portland. Part biopic of Russell and part story of the history of the team, this movie seemed like it was the story of the real life Bad News Bears. Kurt Russell, who played on the team was in attendance at the screening and spoke at the Q&A with the directors.

What was your favorite film? As far as genre films go I liked the Raid 2 the best. I also liked the Skeleton Twins with Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig and Whiplash.

Can I go with you next year?
:orely:

That's it for now.

I was just going to ask how you saw so many movies that hadn't been released yet, then I saw your Sundance comment at the end of your post, Lookwhoitis. I'm so jealous that you went. Details!
I OD on film for two weeks every year in mid january. I have been to ten Sundances and have seen almost every big film that came out of there in that period. I was at the opening screening of Napoleon Dynamite, saw Morgan Spurlock and talked to him on mainstreet before Super Size Me had even screened and then blew up at the fest, and was in the most emotionally wracked audience I have ever sat in when I saw Fruitvale last year (I mean you could literally hear people sobbing in the theater). I usually average about 25 screenings a fest. It has been a heck of a ride

How was Dead Snow 2? As good as the first, or is it one where they should have never made a sequel?

Here is my deal with Dead Snow 2. First of all I loved it. Crazy creative, funny as hell, and a heck of a ride. If you think they come up with creative deaths on the Walking Dead, then try watching this movie!

The crazy thing about this is, I cant compare it to the first film, because I never saw it! Not when it played at Sundance (you cant see everything) or in the year following. Funny thing is this is the exact same thing that happened to me with the RAID. I have still never seen the original pictures for either franchise. When I should have been watching the Raid and Dead Snow in preparation for my Sundance Journey, instead I went to a double feature of Lone Survivor and her before blasting off for Park City. Needless to say, I loved both of these films so I will be watching the first ones in the series soon...

I cry your pardon Gunslinger! :shoot: Easy now, though, dont hurt yourself! :P

Here is how the past month for me has gone: Upon returning from Sundance I had 4 days to MOVE  which if you have seen the depth and breadth of my comic and book collection you would understand how much of an undertaking that is! Plus I just got off of working close to 100 hours on a convention in 8 days, so I've been a little busy as of late and couldn't reply to these posts. (The fact that I was binge watching True Detective every night even though I had 430am wakeups didn't help either, lol)

Plus there is the fact that I spend most of my time on these boards in the Calvin's Corner. Also, I surf by using the UNREAD POSTS tab at the top corner, so I often am going through posts that have recently been put up. I do really dig the film section though. We seem to have a lot of passionate film lovers with whom I definitely fit in with!

We definitely do. I hope you continue to post more down here :)

Once you finally watch the first Dead Snow you'll have to let me know what you think. And now you have me excited to see the second one. It looked good based on the trailer but I was worried it was going to turn out to be one of those bad sequels.

I was pretty drunk that night and me and my friend were hoping we could laugh it it because of Ebert's review: "There's obviously an audience for the film, probably a large one. They are content, even eager, to sit in a theater and watch one action figure after another pound and blast one another to death. They require no dialogue, no plot, no characters, no humanity. Have you noticed how cats and dogs will look at a TV screen on which there are things jumping around? It is to that level of the brain's reptilian complex that the film appeals." - Roger Ebert I love his negative reviews lol

I couldn't disagree more with Ebert. Sure, the film isn't going to win Oscars, but it's an action film and it knows it. Some of the scenes are like watching dancers. It's violently beautiful. The choreography is some of the best you will ever see in a Kung-Fu film. You should give it another shot while not drunk.

I am a big Miyazaki fan, so I loved it. The story was interesting too. There were some muted fantasy elements (in dream sequences) that Miyazaki is known for, but it was almost a straight biography. The earthquake scene was really good. Miyazaki is a Master craftsman. He deservedly (in my mind) is compared in the same realm as Disney and Spielberg.

I've never been able to get into Kung-Fu films at all. I guess the way I see it, if you can spend all that time and money into action choreography and special effects and dreaming up stylistic ways for your characters to fight each other then they should be able to come up with a plot that isn't awful. Like you said, if I want to watch fight choreography I already watching 3-6 hours of wrestling a week lol The Raid took itself really seriously where as Shoot-Em Up doesn't...I was hoping The Raid would be over-the-top, tongue in cheek but it was just trying to hard to be gritty for me.

How did you like Sin Nombre? I've been meaning to watch that for years.

It was really good. The director is the guy who directed all the True detective eps (and also is slated to do the IT remake), Cary Fukunaga. I missed it at Sundance when it played (and won awards) and heard good word of mouth from friends. Had to check it out after being pretty blown away by True Detective.
I mean I usually like most gang related pictures right off the bat, but this one was pretty good. It wasn't just a gangbanger movie.

Yeah, since I'm a fan of True Detective, I did some research and found out that the director of True Detective also wrote and directed Sin Nombre. It made me move it back up the list.

Cary Fukanaga won over my heart as a director with his Jane Eyre re-make and I patiently awaiting a release date for IT so I can finally read the book. If there is one thing he is very skilled with it is envisioning an atmosphere and making sure that his film is imbued in that atmosphere. From the previews I've seen of True Detective it looks to be more of the same and I think that skill will be invaluable for adpating IT.

When I read Fukunaga's comments about his take on IT, I poo-pooed them because I had not seen his work. After seeing his development of atmposphere and suspense in True Detective, I believe he can pull IT off.

Lol, yeah I've seen a couple. But my list is laughably bad compared to other years. It's a combination of TV shows being my primary source for visual entertainment lately and focusing more on my physical health these past 12 months, vis a vie exercising and working out.

I'm watching The Sopranos and The Wire, I just finished up my 3rd Breaking Bad rewatch, and I just got into Mad Men. Each one of those is -at minimum - a 60 hour endeavor. So many stories to consume so little time!

Not sure if this is the correct thread for this, but Regal Cinemas was showing The Shawshank Redemption today, as part of a cinema classics series. And of course I had to catch it on the big screen as it is one of my two favorite films! It was great seeing it in the theater again, it doesn't seem like it has been 20 years!

You won't be disappointed. So well acted and written and the production value in terms of creating the time period is bar none the best production value I've ever seen on a TV show, and the acting and writing is top notch. Right now my top three shows are Soipranos, Six Feet Under and Man Men. I'll be starting Breaking Bad in a few weeks and find out what all that fuss is about.

it was okay. I don't know if I think anything about it - I enjoyed it last night, but it doesn't seem to have stayed with me into today. Liked the Gordon line, hence the plus I added to the grade; it sure was creepy and convincing, and Will Patton was very good in it.

I saw The Mothman Prophecies on tv when I was rapidly skipping between channels . I watched 5-10 minutes of it; but then I thought I had to see it from the beginning and I quit.
Since then, it is in my mind but somehow I couldn't get my hands on it.

I agree. Don't waste your time. I didn't care for it at all, and now know why it took a few years to get it released. When I first saw the previews it looked like a bloody slasher film (which I love), then I started hearing poor reviews, and then I heard it compared to the likes of Cabin in the Woods a few times (which I'm not sure where that came from cause it didn't have those elements at all). It was definitely a straight up horror film, but a very boring one at that.

Well, I guess I'm going to complicate things for you a bit more. I enjoyed You're Next. It's hardly an amazing film or groundbreaking in anyway, but I enjoyed it. I'm not exactly the horror aficionado of some of the people here, but I don't see why so many people hated it. My favorite part of the film is the fact that it's super empowering for females. Most females in horror films are weak and portrayed as stupid. The main character in You're Next is smart and she kicks ass. We should be applauding that kind of film making.

Also, in general, You're Next got good reviews. 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.

by the way, I am right now watching a horror film (Ghost Ship) with a female protagonist who is, surprisingly, not annoying and quite believable - unlike many other movies where female leads are also cool, strong, competent and all that, but at the same time totally unbearable

Agreed. I'm all for having a strong female lead that can kick some ass. But the character was so boring and forgettable, that even though she was this strong woman, I really could have cared less what happened to her, or anyone else in the film for that matter.

I also just noticed that you watched Mr. Nobody? How was it? That's another that I've been wanting to see.

Well, I like Jared in all things (even when it's bad, although this one is not). It's a very quirky, sci-fi movie. If anything, it could have been edited down a bit... it seems long. It's loosely based on string theory - Nemo Nobody, the main character and last mortal on earth, lives out a number of alternate lives simultaneously... all being shown in flashbacks from a distant future. Great cinematography and effects. And, of course, it has Jared Leto ;)

Yes, that's always a good thing! Plus it has Sarah Polley who I love. I'll check it out soon, netflix has it streaming at the moment.

What did you think of The Raid? I know you saw the second one first.

Dug it whole heartedly. The fight choreography in it is amazing. Gareth Evans is a talented fellow. I see Raid 3 is announced on his IMDB page already and I expect him to be on some big budget action pic soon as his name and legacy grows.

The little guy who played the badguy henchman was a bad ass.

Really dug how the score of almost techno music adds to the action and tension

The production values in the first film were lesser, but Evans still did a lot with what he had. Raid 2 you can tell had more money put into it. Wish I could have watched em both back to back.

I'm not a huge martial arts film aficionado, but I've seen most of the good ones and I enjoy them. I remember fondly watching Kung Fu Theater on Saturday afternoons as a kid lol.

It seems like Martial Arts movies follow a curve like the new Horror films have. Each one tries to out do the last.

Evans' Raid films are certainly the best I have seen in the Martial Arts genre, although I am a layman and not qualified to know if they are really doing it the best from a technical (fighting) standpoint. It sure looks cool as hell!

Totally agree. The thing that is going to piss me off is that Hollywood is going to come knocking and hire Evans to direct some big budget sequel or remake. I want something original out of Evans like The Raid films. He even said he wants to branch off and do some new stuff. Hollywood needs fresh new ideas, especially when it comes to the action genre. There's almost nothing new in that genre.

I'm glad you liked the original Raid. There are so many memorable scenes for me. This is probably my favorite scene. I just love how the camera follows the guy down the hole. Good stuff. I also love the sound from The Raid. A very underrated part of those films.

Mike, what'd you think of Noah (I can't remember if you posted your opinion already). And I was disappointed in Parkland.

Mike, what'd you think of Noah (I can't remember if you posted your opinion already). And I was disappointed in Parkland.

I can't remember if I mentioned it or not either, but I didn't love Noah, but I didn't hate it either. I saw it with three other people and they hated it.

I was also disappointed in Parkland, but I kind of figured I wouldn't like it. You know a film like Parkland is a skunk when it has a cast like that and is produced by Tom Hanks and goes directly to DVD/instant stream. Parkland is a perfect example of a film that strays from the normal Hollywood formatting for a film.

You guys all know a lot about film, but a lot of people don't even realize there is a formula to almost every film. Every film is broken up into 3 acts and in those acts, there are certain plot points that move the action forward. Almost every film follows this formula. Parkland is one that doesn't. The other problem with Parkland is it has no clear protagonist. The film lacks focus and seems to wander from one scene to the next.

I find it kind of funny that you mentioned Noah and Parkland because they both suffer from the same affliction and that's the fact that you know what's going to happen. Neither film really brought anything new to the table. Noah also has a very odd sequence that had me kind of scratching my head.

Keep in mind, I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten through High School, so I'm familiar with a lot of the stories in the bible. That being said, when Noah introduced massive stone creatures that talked, I was more than a little confused. It ended up making sense, but I don't remember anything like that in the bible.

It's worth a rental, but I wouldn't rush out to see it.

It's slow in places but it never lost my attention, is what I meant to say in my post above. The story unfolded rather well in a nice slow burn. This is the sort of movie that Insidious was trying to be but failed at because The Sentinel is far creepier in it's execution than Insidious ever dreamed of being...I only bring this correlation up having watched the Insidious films last night lol

Do you use torrents? If so I have a link that might work.Do bears, you know, in the woods?
My download appears to have come back to life, if it freezes again, I'll be very grateful for a link!
(how else do you think I watch all these movies???)

Check out kickass.to. It is the only website I will use, just double check a torrent is verified/paruse comments for quality and git er done. Been using that site for about four or five years and have never had an issue, virus or a bad file.
