As most of you know, I'm a columnist, reviewer and podcaster for the comic book website, comiXtreme.com (http://www.comixtreme.com). Since my ramblings are always available there, I'd like to point out whenever I've got a new rambling available. This week's column, for instance.

This week's Everything But Imaginary: I hate speculators -- those folks who buy comic books by the boxful in the hopes of selling them and buying a house one day. And there are forces in the universe trying to FEED those speculators. I call them "Home Shopping Networks." Ugh.

I've found that whenever I speculated, it did not work. I have umpteen copies of X-Men #1 and Sectacular Spider-Man 226 as exhibits A-ZZZ. Now I just buy what I enjoy reading.

Damn right, man -- that's the only way to do it.

This week's Everything But Imaginary: Superheroes change their costumes all the time. Spider-Man has a few suits in his closet, Superman tried that ugly blue number for a while, and Iron Man can't seem to keep his armor design consistent from one panel to the next! But what about when characters as old as any of them try a whole new look? Are you ready for the "new" Betty and Veronica?

Episode Nineteen: Star Wars
by Blake Petit and Chase Bouzigard

It's a multi-fandom geekfest in this week's 2 in 1 Showcase. May is the 30th Anniversary of the original Star Wars movie, and there's no way Chase and Blake could let such an occasion go by without notice. This week our boys spend time talking about their all-time favorite Star Wars comic books, talk about the comics being published by Dark Horse Comics these days, and tell you how to get your episode idea moved up on "The List." Then they think out of the box for this week's picks -- TwoMorrows Publishing's The Dark Age and Fantagraphics' The Complete Peanuts. And stay tuned later this week for Chase's special bonus report from Phoenix Rising, New Orleans' big Harry Potter convention!

Soooo... this week's column. Some people worry that comics with a rich history will be too intimidating to new readers. Me? I think it's like a puzzle waiting to be put together.

For a few months now, Chase Bouzigard and I have been gracing your ears with our soon-to-be world famous 2 in 1 Showcase podcast (http://twoinone.libsyn.com). And it's a blast. But you can't listen to us 24/7 (mainly because we've only made 20 episodes so far). So for this week's Everything But Imaginary, I'm taking a few minutes to talk about some of the other comic book podcasts out there -- they aren't us, but they aren't bad, either.

Episode Twenty-One: Archie Comics
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit

There's something for the whole family in this week's 2 in 1 Showcase when Chase and Blake turn their attention to America's favorite teenager and the rest of the gang at Archie Comics. Blake recalls his favorite titles, Chase ponders the cartoon show, and the guys talk about the "new look" of Betty and Veronica, the AWOL Archie superheroes, Sonic the Hedgehog and everything else Archie! This week's picks stay with the family-friendly theme, with Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man and Uncle Scrooge, plus a bonus discussion on various Disney projects. Gather the kids -- young and old -- and listen to this one together.

by Blake Petit and Chase Bouzigard
In times of crisis, things always go into chaos for DC's scarlet speedster, The Flash! And if there's one thing Chase and Blake know, it's that chaos makes for good podcasting. This week the guys discuss their all-time favorite Flash stories, what they think really happened in Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #13 and Justice League of America #10, the future of the Flash legacy, and the impact of time-travel jet lag on the human body. ....

Episode Twenty-Five: The Transformers
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit
This week's Showcase is -- say it with us, folks -- more than meets the eye! Delving into the depths of their childhood, Blake and Chase celebrate the new Transformers movie by talking about their all-time favorite Transformers comics, just why it was that some kids preferred G.I. Joe to the Robots in Disguise, how much they love the classic movie, and just what it is they expect from Michael Bay's film. Then they get offbeat with this week's picks, Black Summer and Gutsville. And as always, don't forget to continue the conversation at Comixtreme.com (http://www.comixtreme.com) and the Myspace Page (http://www.myspace.com/2in1showcase) and give us your reviews!

Episode Twenty-Six: Women in Comics
by Blake Petit and Chase Bouzigard
Challenged by a listener, this week Blake and Chase attempt to tackle one of the most complicated issues ever -- women in comics. How have female characters evolved? Are female creators becoming more prominent? And is it true that a male writer can't write a convincing female character? Once the guys get deep, they have some brain candy for this week's picks -- World War Hulk: X-Men and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight.

So, gang, we're going to have a feedback-based episode of 2 in 1 Showcase (http://twoinone.libsyn.com) very soon, and I'd like a little help. We would like your questions to answer on the show. They can be about previous episodes -- "So, how did you guys wind up liking that movie?" They can be about comics we haven't discussed -- "Do you read Awesome Man? Do you LIKE Awesome Man?" They can be about us or the show. "How do you record the podcast? And how did you get to be so awesome?" They can be about comics, movies, TV or any other aspect about pop culture! The only limit is that we have to get your questions by FRIDAY. So e-mail them to showcase@comixtreme.com, PM them to me, or even ask 'em here in the thread. Just get those questions flowing!

That was, in fact, a Conan graphic in last week's logo. I couldn't see myself making a Harry Potter logo, since it'd probably never get used again. :D

After a lackluster summer for comic book movies, some nervous nellies are ready to proclaim the genre's death. A quick glance ahead shows there's still plenty of life left in Hollywood for comic properties.

Episode Twenty-Nine: Neil Gaiman and Stardust
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit

There's one last comic book movie closing out the summer, friends, and so this week Chase and Blake turn their focus on Stardust writer Neil Gaiman. Listen as the guys discuss their favorite Gaiman stories, both in comics and prose, as Chase continues to confuse "the Dream King" with Gaiman himself, and as Blake explains what's really good about his work once you get past the pretentious goths who have attempted to co-opt it as their own. For this week's picks, Blake brings us Doug TenNapel's Black Cherry, and Chase cheats and slips in two -- Tek Jansen and Star Trek: Year Four. Be sure to come back later this weekend for Blake's special Stardust mini-review, and you can join in on the show by e-mailing showcase@comiXtreme.com with your favorite Avengers, Adventure Strip heroes, and Supergirl stories for use in future episodes!

Hey, guys. I'd meant to post this yesterday, but the death of Mike Wieringo (http://www.comixtreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36136) rather took precedence. Comics have lost a true giant, and this week's EBI will be a salute to him.

But now for today -- as promised in last weekend's 2 in 1 Showcase episode on Neil Gaiman (http://media.libsyn.com/media/twoinone/Ep._29_Neil_Gaiman.mp3), I've come back with a review of the film based on his novel Stardust. Actually, I've come out with two reviews for ya.

First, if you want to use your good ol' trusty eyes to read the review, you can click here: Comixtreme.com Review of Stardust (http://www.comixtreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36131).

Or, if you've got about three and a half minutes to spare, you can listen to the 2 in 1 Showcase Mini-Podcast Review of Stardust (http://media.libsyn.com/media/twoinone/Ep._29.5_Stardust.mp3).

Actually, I'd really like it if you guys could listen to the mini-review. I tried a little something different with the audio and I'd like your opinions as to how it sounds.

Hey Blake! Have you ever read any Doom Patrol? Not the most recent run but the Paul Kupperberg/Rachel Pollack/Grant Morrison run of the 90's. I know it stemmed from DC's "My Greatest Adventure" but I've never actually got hold of any of those to read them. Anyhow, I do have the entire run I mentioned above, and would love to hear what you think.

BlakeMP

I've read a few of those, but not many, I'm afraid. I hadn't branched out into Vertigo comics too much at the period those were being produced, and I haven't gotten around to hunting for 'em since then.

Darkthoughts

It did take me a long time to get the whole collection together. I got into it initially because Jamie Hewlett illustrated a couple of issues during the Morrison run, and I was really into Tank Girl at the time.

The most recent statistics available (so recent, in fact, that I am making them up even as I write this sentence) show that the average American will change careers 2.5 times before being driven to madness by uncertainty or, if they’re lucky, death. Seven years ago, I graduated college with a bright, shiny degree in journalism. Today, I sit in a classroom at the same college to begin the task of obtaining my certification to teach high school English, but as I sit here in a classroom at my age, it’s somehow comforting to remember that even the superheroes sometimes have to try a few times before they get it right.

Episode Thirty-One: Adventure Heroes and Booster Gold
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit
With a new Flash Gordon show on TV, the guys take this week to talk about classic old-school adventure strip heroes. Buck Rogers! Dick Tracy! Doc Savage! The Phantom! And, of course, when they came together as the Defenders of the Earth! They talk about the new Flash Gordon (or perhaps "rant" would be more appropriate) and finish off the discussion by lamenting their lack of a theme song. Then, this week's pick of the week completely takes over the second half of the show, as the guys gush like giddy schoolgirls over the sheer awesomeness that was Booster Gold #1. Also, be sure to hit the guys up at showcase@comiXtreme.com with your comments and your picks for your favorite "cult" comics, team-up stories, and Thor adventures!

Hey, guys -- I just finished editing up this week's episode of 2 in 1 Showcase, featuring Supergirl, and it sounds pretty sweet. It'll be online later today.

But that means it's gonna be time to record again soon, and WE NEED YOUR E-MAILS! What are your favorite "cult" comics -- by which we mean comics that are worth talking about, but haven't got 500 issues for us to pick from for our discussion.

We've got a listener request: What are your favorite TEAM-UP stories? Captain America and Batman? Invincible and Spider-Man? Brother Voodoo and Howard the Duck? When two characters who don't usually share the same space get together, what are your favorite tales? Scour those ol' DC Comics Presents and Marvel Two-In Ones and make some picks!

And finally, we're gonna do an episode on the god of thunder, the mighty THOR! What do you think are the best Thor stories of all time?

All of your choices -- along with any other comments about the show -- can be mailed to us at Showcase@comixtreme.com. As always, we'll pick the best and read 'em on the air.

Episode Thirty-Two: Supergirl

Star Wars: Legacy and Wrath of the Titans join the ranks of Showcase Picks this week, and the guys continue their plea for theme song suggestions and your favorite "cult" comics, team-up stories, and tales of the Mighty Thor! Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, The Thing, Richie Rich... what do all these heroes have in common? That's right, they've all anchored a team-up comic! Douglas Wolk's new book "Reading Comics" tries to be the first truly scholarly work examining comic books as an artform. Does it succeed? Well, it ain't BAD... but perhaps Wolk wants the book to be more than it is.

Perhaps thats why it does fail, because he tried. I know many many teachers who use Scott McClouds series as text books. You don't get more 'scholarly' than that.

Well, as part of the 2007 Think About It Central Halloween Party (http://taic.livejournal.com/108384.html), I thought I would do a photo review of the new Marvel Zombie Mini-Mates toys. Hey Blake, look what I picked up this afternoon based on your recommendation!

On a side note:

The guy who runs our local comic bookstore is pretty well known in the comic world as far as retailers go (Also he owns the store that was featured in The Lost Boys). He's shown (as an animal, of course) in the big Convention picture in this new comic.

Hey Blake,

Ever hear of "Not Brand Echh"? The Captain Carrot book reminded me of it (parody/satire, but without the animal angle). It's from before my time, but back when I was a kid I bought issues 2 through 10, I thought it was hilarious. I hoped to one day afford issue #1 but it wasn't in my meager budget. I think there were 12 issues altogether.

Here's what I dug out of a box:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Comics/NotBrandEchh-Collection.jpg

Close-up of issue #2. (I have close-ups of the others but won't bother you with them unless you care to see'em.)

I have, indeed, heard of NBE, although I've never read an issue. I love parody comics like that. Marvel did another one in the late 80s called "What The?!", which frequently referenced the old NBE series.

I wish they'd release an essential edition of those. I'd love to read 'em.

I just got my first opportunity to draw for a comic...a horror anthology. It's one of those deals where I won't be paid unless there's profit, but at least I'll have published something.

Anyway...I enjoy reading comics, and I've enjoyed your rambling and grumbling, so I plan to keep up with this thread.

With their stomachs full and the urge to take a Thanksgiving nap, Blake and Chase sit down this week to dish on some of the all-time comic book turkeys -- comics that were supposed to be the Next Big Thing and turned out to be the thing everyone wishes they could forget. Spider-Man: Chapter One, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, JLA: World War III, and X-Men: The End have badges of dishonor bestowed upon them. Now that the story of the year has ended, I'm offering my spoiler-filled analysis of the story and the repercussions for our heroes. Click on the link if you dare...

Tsk, tsk…) But now, friends, with time running out, we’re all busy. Gifts to buy, presents to wrap, cakes to bake, hams to baste, cookies to decorate… God, I love Christmas. Ahem. But every year, we manage to get a few very special comic book extravaganzas featuring our favorite heroes and villains dealing with the holidays in various ways. So today, let’s all take a few minutes to examine some of the Christmas Comics of 2007!

Never read much of it, really. I'm not really a big fan of the Sword and Sorcery subgenre. I'm sure much of it (particularly the Roy Thomas stuff) is very good, it's just not my thing.

There's a lot of talk these days about how the trade paperback is hurting the monthly comic book... but what are trade paperbacks doing to back issue sales? And what can be done to help comic shop owners in need? It's a heady topic in this week's EBI, but for a comic fan, it may be one of the most important things you haven't thought about.

Actually, Way is the writer. Someone else is doing the artwork.

As for if it's worth it... well, I like it. But it really depends on your tastes. It's got a sort of "Hellboy," "Perhapanauts" vibe -- a bizarre take on superheroes. If that idea appeals to you, go for it.

Chase and I are getting together to record the next batch of 2 in 1 Showcase episodes Friday afternoon. For Episode 54, we're covering Messiah Complex. Episode 55 will feature Deadpool, Cable and the "X-Force" subcorner of the X-Men. Thoughts on either of these episodes are appreciated.

But for Episode 56, we're considering a sort of all-feedback episode. We'd really like to spend an episode every once in a while going through your questions, your thoughts and our reactions. Kinda like an episode-length "Ask Chase Anything," except focused mostly on comics and other geekstuff.

So what I'd really like you guys to do is to send us your questions -- and I mean ALL of your questions. Questions about the show. Questions about the episodes. Questions about past and future topics. Questions about comics and movies. Questions with words that you think would be funny to hear us try to pronounce. ANYTHING -- we're going for quantity here. We'll pick our favorite questions and cover them all in episode 56.

So please, PLEASE, PM me with your questions, or e-mail them to Showcase@comixtreme.com. We're recording Friday afternoon, so you've got until February 1 at around 4 p.m.(ish) to get your questions in. We love doing this show, and we couldn't do it without your help. Here's your chance to contribute. Thanks, and start sending the questions!

In the picks this week, Chase loves Nova, while Blake gives love to the criminally underrated Blue Beetle. Come back next week, when the guys will look at the X-Force family of books, and in the meantime, drop them a line at Showcase@comixtreme.com.

The fine folks at Shadowline are holding a true rarity in comics -- a contest for WRITERS to get a shot at the big time. But why IS it so hard for a writer to get into comics anyway? As someone trying his hardest to do it, here are my thoughts.

After much speculation, DC Comics has confirmed all suspicions: their next weekly comic will focus on the Big Three -- Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. How will this little experiment play out? I offer my thoughts...

In the picks this week, Chase presents Chronicles of Wormwood: The Last Enemy, while Blake bids a fond farewell to Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's Vertigo mainstay, Y: The Last Man. Episode Fifty-Seven: Nightwing
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit
Getting back to their geek roots, this week Chase and Blake take on the character who has been called the "Axis" of the DC Universe, the most famous sidekick of all time, and the lynchpin of some of DC's most classic teams. Originally the first Robin, the boy wonder, now the man named Dick Grayson goes by Nightwing. Our guys shell out their favorite Nightwing stories, talk about what the character means to the DC Universe, and Chase makes the most unfortunate slip of the tongue in Showcase history! In the picks this week, the guys take time to pimp Subculture and Young Avengers Presents. Send in your comments, suggestions and Ask Chase Anything questions to Showcase@comixtreme.com!

Episode 59: Western Comics
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit
This week, as per your requests, the guys dive into Western Comics! Why does Blake love them? Why doesn't Chase? We touch upon great western heroes from Jonah Hex to Bat Lash to The Lone Ranger to Zorro to less orthodox western yarns like Preacher, The Ballad of Sleeping Beauty, The Kents and The Dark Tower. (And if you want our thoughts on the new Zorro comic, check our our mini-Episode 58.5 (http://media.libsyn.com/media/twoinone/Ep._58.5_NewFrontier.mp3).) After a feedback-sparked debate about the quality of children's comics, the guys get to this week's picks. Blake chimes in for Fantastic Comics #24 -- the beginning of The Next Issue Project -- and Chase starts to celebrate Fantastic Four #554... until he remembers reading it.
