Ok here we go. (warning: my mind works differently to most peoples )

If GB = E and PM = FA and S = HH, Who would = DG?

Good luck!

well I say clues, probably more like infuriating additional equations that will hopefully confuse you more...

I need one clue, namely: do you think it is solvable?

stroppygoblin
11-15-2013, 08:35 AM
sure - if you think laterally. There is a big clue in the question and of course its Stephen King related. All you have to do is work out how.

Bears can do it!

The thread is called "Equations" for a reason...

Equations usually involve substituting Letters with Numbers

But the question asks for WHO, so not all letters are numbers..

Stand = Hemingford Home ... nope that doesn't work for the rest of them ...

OK, let's try letters to numbers:

If 72 = 5 and 1613 = 61 and 19 = 88, Who would = 47?

7 minus 2 equals 5 ... 16 backwards is 61 ... 19 backwards is 91 and 9 minus 1 is 8 ...

The thread is called "Equations" for a reason.

A good summing up. a few clarifications:

Shannon

- S = 88 ... "Skybar" is SK's 88th short fiction story, per the Justin Brooks biblio ... none of the other numbers add up to anything.
- 3rd clue, quote from Waste Lands, "you only need to do is read a particular book" leads me to page number in Waste Lands ... but that didn't pan out.

The equation I'm going off of is: "If GB = 5 and PM = 61 and S = 88, Who would = 47?" because the Whos would transfer over to the left side of the equal sign, and not only that but PM = 1613 ... and that doesn't help the situation at all. I'm going to go with CHARACTER = something ... Not the character that first appears on that page in Waste Lands ... Not the main character in the SK book whose number it is chronologically ...

Are there any "S" characters?

Also was thinking somewhere along the lines of GB = George Beahm and DG = Donald Grant ... not sure where that would go.

I feel like a big stupidhead.

The Long Walk - RG is Ray Garretty (No 47) (D is the 4th letter of the alphabet and G is the seventh)

Gary Barkovitch (GB) was no 5 (E is the 5th Letter of the alphabet)
Pete McVries (PM) was no 61 (F is the sixth and A is 1)
Stebbins (S) was no 88 (H is the eighth letter)

So I wondered what this Equation thread was that got a lot of hits. I was surprised; I thought that it would be a game like so:

Roland does this + Eddie says that - the apple that Oy ate x the number of riddles told to Blaine + the amount of times Roland twirls his fingers during a storytelling = a better outcome at the Tower.

At any rate, bats are too slow for this one, but I congratulate you Stroppy for coming up with this. Bravo!

I think I got it! maybe it's just coincidence, because I can't check the others now, but

is 47 Ray Garraty's number in Long Walk? I only remembered it because I recently came across this (http://www.horrorking.com/errors.php?errorpage=longwalk)in BookErrors. Then the answer is RG. Whether or not the other parts are characters in the same book matched to their numbers, I don't know right now)

Interesting site, especially those errors. The Long walk is one of my all time favourites and I have read it many many times (this question led me to read it again last week on the train!) Only bears don't go on this kind of long walks!!! where bears walk, everyone survives and gets lots of honey!!!

Talking about that site, I am not sure their last LW error is correct. As far as I remember, the "warnings" were reset to zero after some time

stroppygoblin
11-20-2013, 04:52 AM
Thats correct, if you could walk for an hour without dropping below the 4mph limit, your last warning would reset. "only his second warning since the walk began" is incorrect as it is talking about the total number of warnings rather than the current warning count.
