Having just rearranged my collection, thanks to a new pair of bookcases, thought it might now be time to finally take some pics of my collection. Hopefully the resolution will be good enough to make out the titles on the spines. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks. I got it at my local Border's at their Going Out of Business sale...picked it up as a memento of all the good times I had there with my daughters as they were growing up. It's actually a greeting card holder, but each slot holds two paperbacks perfectly, and its curvature style is kind of cool in that it doesn't quite look like a paperback spinner...and yet it does.

No problem there...the three small windows that you see on the east wall have UV reduction coating (and are partially blocked by the items on top of the bookcases), and the large window to the south is always shuttered closed. The camera exaggerated the glare coming from it onto the glass fronts of the bookcases. In fact, it's always so dim in here that my wife calls it a cave.

If I get really ambitious soon, I'll take individual shots of each shelf...I figure those won't be shrunk down, and it's probably the best way to read the spines anyway.

I also like your online book database. Do you have every book you own in there, including reading copies, or...? Do you keep track of the market value of the books, or are these the prices you paid for them? (please feel free to ignore my last questions if you don't feel comfortable discussing this here!)

I only have a Word file with my King collection, based on Brooks' King Bibliography. I don't keep track of condition or value (and as a consequence I have no idea what I paid for most of my books, unless I dig out the PayPal invoices). But I like your setup and perhaps I'll give it a try. I know that many of our collector friends here use database software but I kind of like the 'do it yourself' approach.

Just about every book, yes. There are a few reading copies that are so valueless that it wasn't worth the time to input them (and they typically get traded in at local bookstores shortly afterwards anyway). There's also some non-fiction that hasn't made it in...for whatever reason, I don't worry too much about inputting that type of material. But, yes, that's probably about 95% of my books...I just pulled up the database and it shows 2287 books at the present time. As books that did get recorded are sold -- either traded in at local bookstores or sold on eBay -- they are of course removed from the Excel database.

I originally constructed it and posted it on-line for two primary reasons: 1). If something happens to me, my wife knows the approximate retail value of each book...I'd hate to think my signed copy of UNDER THE DOME or SILENCE OF THE LAMBS -- both worth several hundreds of dollars -- and many other such valuable books would be sold for a couple bucks each at an estate sale, and 2). If I'm at a bookstore and can't recall if have a certain title or not, I can pull up the on-line database while I'm there and find out (interestingly, though, I've only had to do that a couple times...my memory may falter at some things but not when it comes to books). Plus, it's fun to show off on rare occasions like this. :wink:

The values -- no, they're not what I paid for them, they're the retail values I assigned the book at the time I input them into the database by averaging values found at ABE, AddAll, eBay, et al. That italicized portion is the caveat: As we all know, books often fluctuate in price...what was once a hot item can cool off for a variety of reasons, or, conversely, an item that wasn't worth much at one point can rapidly increase in demand and value. I really like the idea of having a list of books you own at your disposal when you're at a bookstore. In fact, I have an iPhone app in which I listed the books I own of a couple of very prolific authors - not Mr. King - because I can never remember which titles I'm still looking for. But I am not really happy with the format and I think a plain online Excel sheet would work much better.

Agreed; I have all of Strantzas' collections. Richard Gavin, Simon Bestwick, and Simon Unsworth are a few other great UK (though one or more may be Canadian) authors of similar style.

Speaking of chapbooks: I have Nathan Ballingrud's THE VISIBLE FILTH on order...apparently my copy got lost in the mail, so am awaiting my replacement copy.

A NF/NF 1st edition/printing hardcover of a rather obscure favorite of mine: Harry Kressing's THE COOK. Kressing (a pseudonym) was doing Bentley Little before Bentley Little was doing Bentley Little. Imagine one of Little's horror satires set in a fable'ized Downton Abbey setting, and imagine it's one of his very best works, and you have some small idea of the imaginative power and magic of this novel. Regrettably this cult-classic masterpiece is the only such novel he wrote; a second novel, MARRIED LIVES, was released, but it's better forgotten.

Very nice additions! I remember reading Flowers for Algernon in high school. I also grabbed the Jim Thompson set, not matching unfortunately.

Yeah, ALGERNON is a sentimental favorite of mine. I re-read it upon getting this new edition, and appreciated the subtext of the book a lot more than I did when I was a kid back in school.

I hope this first set of Thompson book is the first set of several to come; my understanding is that it is, contingent, of course, upon how this first set sold. As I recall, it seemed to sell out fairly quickly.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to upload a number of recent prides and joys every day. Some of these purchases may have been done within the last week, some perhaps as old as a couple years ago. The only thing that most of the pictures will have in common is that few are related to Stephen King...so if that's your sole interest, you probably won't find much of interest here.

I have. Having read just about everything Lansdale's written, I would categorize this among his lesser works...relatively predictable and slight, it's not particularly original and is missing that richness of character that his better works have.

I enjoy Block a great deal. I'm not much of a series guy, so prefer his standalones, and have read just about all of them. That said, I do love his Keller series (HIT MAN, HIT LIST, etc.) as I'm a fan of both hitman and antihero protagonists, so that series hits all the right buttons. If you want to sample his standalones, several of his early Hard Case Crime reprints are the place to start (plus they're easy to find), namely GRIFTER'S GAME and THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART...those two are, IMO, the best of his HCC reprints. His short stories are outstanding as well -- ENOUGH ROPE is a massive collection of 84 stories and and is excellent.

I am a big James Herbert fan and have all his books in one form or another. I have yet to get around to getting his Centipede limiteds. Too many other books to buy.

I really like Herbert's early works, that ones King says contain "raw urgency," but from about '85's MOON , I fell away from him (with the exception of '48 ) as his style grew far less raw and urgent and, instead, rather overly polished and surprisingly sedate.

I’ve been horrible about keeping up this thread, and I’m honestly not likely to do much better going forward.

That said, I do, however, post a daily Showcase Book on Twitter — sometimes King, but often not, given that I post a Showcase Book every day. I featured a traycased 1st of THE STAND back on 4/26, for example. Today’s book is the Cemetery Dance edition of Kings IT. Tomorrow will be a Joe Hill signed chapbook.
