Hello evryone,

want to borrow your brain for a sec.

George R.R. Marting has been blogging about his latest anthology "DANGEROUS WOMEN". One of the contributors - Jim Butcher, with Molly Carpenter short story "Bombshell" from Dresden Files -
http://www.tor.com/stories/2013/07/dangerous-women-jim-butcher-excerpt

From your past expirinece, will this book published as limited edition later?
Will the signed copies be offered by the publisher?
As far as i can tell, the only way to get it signed by GRRM and JB is to buy the book and mail to to GRRM (he still signed his books this way in Jan 2013) and get it sign by JB in person.

What do you think?
Thanks!

Alex

Never read a Jim Butcher before - suggestions on one to start with and what I can expect?

Comrade Alex

Hello Dr.Zaius

I opened this thread, so let me share my experience with JB books.
Dresden Files include 15 books (3 more or so coming).
Full list here - http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden
The first book in this series I read (actually listened as audiobook) was book #13 "Ghost Story". Picked it up at random at local library and got hooked for life :)
I'd describe it as "Harry Porter for adults".
Well written, very dynamic, good mix of real life and magic world. Vivid characters, harsh humor, good intentions with well known results.
So start with "Storm Front" (book 1).
The only thing to keep in mind (of course if you get into DF) - by the time you are done 16 existing books, you'll be suffering for the next 3 years, waiting for the next installment release.
Let me know if you want to now more.
Have fun!
Alex

If I liked the TV show, is it a safe bet that I will enjoy the books?

Comrade Alex

Hey Scoogs,
I think so, as long as you will not expect the books to correlate to the show much.
The books contain more action, more magic, more consistent storyline, more developed characters, some dark humor.
There is a community of the DF fans dwelling here http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/board,2.0.html
I like this piece of DF art – it captured Harry's essence - http://www.deviantart.com/art/Harry-Dresden-217278313
Enjoy the books!

Alex

Hi Sharki,
sorry for the late reply (was on vacation first and dealing with after vacation pile up). You are right, Jim Has Codex Alera series. Codex Alera is a classic fantasy saga and quite different from the Dresden Files. I managed to get thru half of the first book but got distracted, and by the time I was ready to continue, I realised that I lost interest.
So for me Dresden Files books are MUCH better than Codex Alera.

Hope this helps,
Alex

A quick for Jim Butcher collectors:

The Geeks Doing Good Indie GoGo is up and running:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/geeks-doing-good-2015#/story

--and among the items of interest:

Book Bundle D:
The MYSTERY BOX returns! This is a book bundle full of books from a few different genres and many different authors. Even cooler, it comes with a sampler of Jim Butcher's upcoming book, The Aeronaut's Windlass. If you never want to say "I wonder what I should read..." again, grab Book Bundle D and be set for the rest of your summer reading. Due to high international shipping costs on this heavy box, ONLY SHIPS IN THE US.

I saw the first ARC of AW on eBay earlier this week (the book, which is the first in a new series, The Cinder Spires is due in September.)

If you're not familiar with Geeks Doing Good, I recommend it in any case, and there is a ton of cool stuff available.

Comrade Alex

Thank you for sharing! 1/1 signed of AW is available for pre-order for 32$ at https://www.vjbooks.com/aeronauts-windlass-jim-butcher-signed-first-ed-p/butaero01.htm
I'm trying to locate 1/1 signed at the publisher - nothing showed up yet.

Also, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files: Down Town (Signed Limited Edition) Hardcover – Oct 6 2015 - 32% off preorder for 32$ here - http://www.amazon.ca/Jim-Butchers-Dresden-Files-Limited/dp/1606907018/ref=pd_sim_14_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0ZDBNE34MR5TDFN2NJVN

Another highly anticipated (by me) book (1/1,signed) is available for pre-order: Secondhand Souls by Christopher Moore http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/secondhand-souls-christopher-moore/1120611698?ean=9780062438577
This is sequel for Dirty Job, try it first.

This thread hasn't seen much action and few pictures of people's Butcher collections which is a travesty. Consider this a humble request to see some!

I'm looking to acquire a matching limited set so sorry if it's bad form but I wanted to bump the thread. If I manage to find some I'll fill the thread with pics, haha.

The only Butcher books I've read are the Codex Alera Series, I would give it a very high recommendation.

I bought the limited edition of Furies Of Calderon, by Butcher.
