View Full Version : Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes-Collecting Discussion

Randall Flagg

No information on a Signed Limited, but in an interview with Parade Magazine (http://www.parade.com/15671/kentucker/summers-best-books-starring-stephen-king/), it was disclosed that Stephen King has “more or less” completed his first hard-boiled detective tale, Mister Mercedes."
Time to speculate.

It's not collecting discussion, but I do know a little about the basic premise of the novel from King's recent UMass Lowell appearances:

The part germane to this discussion begins at about 6:23...

Yeah it definitely sounds very interesting. I've been really enjoying King's purely realistic fiction of late (Batman & Robin..., Premium Harmony). Hope it's something like that.

Randall Flagg

It is the internet, so why not try to post info as soon as possible.
I put up a Wiki article with a mock-up image (thanks thanks thanks to Harrison Ryan-who should BTW just do the cover for the real book-the fucker produced the cover image in 24 hours!).
Please, please, if anyone finds ouy an ISBN, Page count, anything to add I will. I have no problem posting reasonable speculation, as long as it's labeled as such.

That "exclusive" Waterstones edition of Dr Sleep... wasn't the only difference that it had an additional foreword by SK? If that's the case it wasn't that exclusive, I picked the same book up from Asda (or may have been Tesco's) with that foreword in it.

Assuming this will get an 'Airport' paperback edition' sometime just after release, which of you 'completist' types want me to try and pick up a 1st print of the UK edition?
I already have a standing order from Steve (ur2ndbiggestfan), but is anyone else interested?

I'm in and out of UK airports on an almost weekly basis and am happy to pick copies up. (Please keep in mind the expense of shipping from the UK)

I just hope that if it does happen that at least a day or two notice, preferably more, will be given. With Joyland announcing the same time as the sale it was a madhouse trying to get a copy and if you happen to be working that day or traveling you were SOL. I lucked out and checked this site at the right time, but not everyone did.

Jimimck
03-11-2014, 03:56 PM
I'd say that if there is one in the works, it would have been announced by now if we were going to get any advanced warning. I suspect if there is one, we won't hear about it until it is up for sale... So fingers crossed I'm awake when it happens!

Dan
03-11-2014, 05:41 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong but Doctor Sleep was announced only a day or two early with speculation about a week before. That would be fine with me. I just don't want to show up to the party late.

Jimimck
03-11-2014, 06:39 PM
CD gave a bit of warning didn't they? Saying "if you are a King collector you don't want to miss our announcement next week"

tippy4

I don't recall that...and if they had.....the boards here would be full of speculation...and I have not seen that.

Jimimck

I really liked the story! A few of the characters seem a bit contrived, but overall thoroughly enjoyed the book!! A few (very few) old King references thrown in for fun. Seems like a Michael Connelly book to me. Have to like detective novels to enjoy this one. But SK threw in a few surprises! I was quite pleased with the book. But disappointed that i waited 6 months for a new book and read it in two days (straight). Now i got to wait another 6 months for the next one!

This is from the may 27 Wall Street Journal regarding the BookExpo America:

Attendees paying $30 a ticket will have the chance to mingle with such authors as John Grisham, David Mitchell, Carl Hiaasen and Veronica Roth and to pick up some free giveaways--including a single signed copy of Stephen King's coming novel "Mr. Mercedes."

These signed copies, if they exist, will be REALLY scarce.

Bev Vincent

I didn't go to BEA. Scribner gave out a couple of hundred copies, but only one was signed. The umbrella is metallic -- it's a different color depending upon the angle you look at it.

Patrick

I bought one of these copies off ebay but didn't know about the foil umbrella until I read it at Lilja's. I had a look and yes it is foil, but I don't have a copy of the regular issue DJ to compare to. Will go to the bookstore tomorrow and check, but I'm guessing the umbrella will not be foil. So yeah, Bev is correct. It seems all covers are the same. I went to the local Barnes & Noble, and every book on the shelf had the foil umbrella.

One interesting note is that I could not find a single copy in Fine condition. There were about 80 copies on the shelves, and every one had something wrong in terms of condition. The predominant issue seems to have been creasing of the DJ at the top and bottom of the spine.

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg592/TacCommE21/dez%20books/b5b8b871-f4b3-42f9-89b9-12862f399b28.jpg (http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/TacCommE21/media/dez%20books/b5b8b871-f4b3-42f9-89b9-12862f399b28.jpg.html)

Now I just need to finish the book I'm currently reading so I can start it!

Welllllll.. Sorry however need to brag on the deal I got at Barnes and Noble. Mr Mercedes marked 30% off today + 10% more off my with my B&N membership + coupon that came to members in the mail for additional 20% off an item.
Brought my book down to $14.40

...and the receipt includes another coupon for $10 of a whole cheesecake. That could be a good snack to celebrate my purchase and also compliment my reading.

Damn you!!! Does it count that I bought copious amounts of alcohol and baked goodies while at Costco?! :P

Chapters has the book for 40% in Canada. Wal-Mart is 50% off.

To echo what someone above said, it was hard to find a fine copy. I mean, they were fine but they weren't minty mint fine, you know what I'm saying? If I had bought one online and received it in the same condition they were in the store, I'd have been fine with that. If I'm buying them in person, they need to be absolutely flawless.
You guys (gals) are way too anal about this. Pick out a great copy or two, but if you get hung up on perfection, it will ruin the joy. It's a $20 book....de-stroke and don't screw it up for yourself.

I'm buying only the one copy which I'm going to read. I'd like it to be in best possible condition.

RF makes a point but the whole ordeal, in-and-out was maybe four minutes tops. Not a big deal.

Hi all, I hope you have all gotten your copies of Mr Mercedes by now and if you want to be part of a celebration of it's release you can do so here: http://www.liljas-library.com/mmspecial.php

I'm asking everyone who wants to join to send a photo of themselves with a copy of Mr Mercedes (along with the Town and country they are from). I then collect all those photos for everyone to see. I hope it will be a massive amount of photos once everyone gets their book.

So, join in if you like!

Fun idea, Lilja. I'll send a pic.

Interesting how some here are referring to the title as Mister and some as Mr w/o the dot and some with the dot. The only cover I see w/o the dot is the UK one. The U.S. cover uses the smiley face for the dot (and on the spine). I wonder if the absence of a dot on the UK cover is a mistake.

I agree however I have zero local bookstores in my area. The only local shops are used pb places that do not sell new releases. Within a 30 mile radius my available options are walmart, book a million, or Sams.

The British don't use a period after if the abbreviation is the first and last letter. US does, with at least one exception I know of - Dr Pepper. I'm sure there are others.

One interesting note is that I could not find a single copy in Fine condition. There were about 80 copies on the shelves, and every one had something wrong in terms of condition. The predominant issue seems to have been creasing of the DJ at the top and bottom of the spine.

Yeah, I was really surprised at this. I literally could not find a single copy that I would have been happy with in terms of quality.

I had a hard time believing this, but I just got back from my Barnes and Noble and found it to be the same situation. Almost all of them were damaged in some way. It looked like someone had angrily thrown them onto the display shelves: dust jackets were ripped, edges and spine tips were significantly bumped and flattened, page tips bent and folded. Just not what I was expecting to find for a book that was released two days ago! I found a good one to use as my reading copy, but I'm going to head over to Sam's tomorrow to pick through theirs for my collection copy. Hopefully I find some that don't look like a dog attacked them.

(A misc. note on quality: new release or old, high price or low, if I'm paying for a book, especially a recent release, I think it's only fair to get a copy in new condition.)

Just to (hopefully) clear up any confusion on the UK edition's. There is only the Trade edition and the WHSmith variant cover edition. There is NO special edition from Waterstones. I visited 3 today and they all checked their systems and confirmed that.

Sounds like you have a lot of the books signed. Doesn't it get really costly getting signed copies, and how have you mostly acquired these? I have a pretty good collection of 1sts, but not signed. The thought of "replacing" them with signed copies is daunting, and also something that will cost thousands.

I am in London for a couple of weeks, and am off to hunt out the two UK editions on Monday. If anyone missed out on Stroppys offer to source either edition, drop me a line. I can't pick up too many due to me needing space in my suitcase for all my wife's shopping that won't fit in her case, but am happy to help out a couple of people if need be....

Shipping will either be from the UK if I get a chance to send on my holiday, or from New Zealand in a few weeks when I get home

Just to (hopefully) clear up any confusion on the UK edition's. There is only the Trade edition and the WHSmith variant cover edition. There is NO special edition from Waterstones. I visited 3 today and they all checked their systems and confirmed that.

The picture that was originally posted is in fact the WHSmith cover variant. (The book itself is identical).

Yeah, my mistake. For some reason, i said Waterstone while I meant WHSmith

Probably. I read and collect a large number of authors, so often King just has to wait his turn in the rotation (though I do, of course, often bump him to the top...though not this time, for whatever reason). I am looking forward to it, though.

I don't get why King would OK reprints of a reprint of a reprint (essentially just another edition of) Carrie, The Stand, Christine etc. and not a brand new book. Other than 30 signature sheets for the lettered of Carrie, none of those books are even signed.

Money for the Independent Printers who are losing market share to the Kindle. because some of us are still stuck buying the reprint of the reprint. some of us buy more than one, because somebody was smart enough to put a number in it, and get Chadbourne to draw another picture.

Dunno, it doesn't have to be anything grand. Even something like the equivalent of the UtD gift edition would've been nice. Or a different dust jacket (yes, I'm aware of the UK DJ variants). Or a single illustration. Or even an upgrade from the crapola of cloth over boards to all cloth.

There's probably going to be some sort of an anniversary edition down the line from the way things are looking now.

Signed Mr. Mercedes (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Horror-Author-STEPHEN-KING-signed-MR-MERCEDES-1st-Book-THE-SHINING-CARRIE-/371085387842?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item566669a842#ht_596wt_1153)

Ugh! I hate sellers who list a synopsis of the book.

Give me the facts jackass, where was the book signed and when?

Based on the photo of King and Rob Reiner that the seller posted and his note to see his other auctions "specializing in BOSTON SPORTS", I'm guessing he happened to have King sign it at the ballpark. Was Mr. Mercedes on shelves at that point?

EDIT: Yup, the game was this past Monday, June 16th, so I'm betting that's where it was signed. Which also explains why it looks like it's signed with a basic ballpoint rather than King's usual Uni-ball.
