I have not seen Hugh's name listed here - so I figured I would start a thread. I am just getting started on his Wool series (a little late to the table). The film rights for that book have already been sold to 20th century fox. Anyway he's going to start promoting the hardcover release of Wool this month. He's only making a few stops - like 12

http://www.hughhowey.com/calendar/

He will be in the Bay Area (in Berkeley) for a reading on the evening of 19 march at book inc. I'm not on call that night so I plan on making the trip (it's only about 40 miles away).

http://www.booksinc.net/event/hugh-howey-books-inc-berkeley

So if anyone's interested in going let me know. Also if anyone's looking for a signed book let me know (I assume he'll be signing books - but I'll call and check before the event).

He's going to be in Houston at Murder by the Book Monday night; will get my UK signed too. Here is the Goldsboro edition - looks just like the UK HB except for the signed page and slipcover.

The press Piper are just printing Wool in german language called Silo (same meaning in english like in german). You can preorder it already and they start delivery at the 12th of March. Because of this thread and the good recommendations about the book i ordered it at amazon (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/3492055850/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)and i am looking forward! I do not really know why they changed the title to Silo and the cover is really ugly, but i think the book is much better...

There will be a US hardcover released by Simon and Schuster. They are apparently into the 2nd printing already pre publication.

They list it as 1st/1st HC uk version wool - signed. I had already ordered one and it has shipped. They also still have copies of drift s/l available to order - didn't go as fast as the s/l of wool (sold out in 2 days). I thought the HC was to be released on 12 march - I had originally ordered it on amazon - but cancelled it once I got the signed uk edition.

Lol,
anybody read the story about Hugh Howey going to a fantasy con and meeting George Martin. George said "I have never heard of you or read your book". Hugh said "Im #6 on amazon right behind your five GOT books." George proceeded to sign Hugh's book
" To #6, Keep trying , Geoge Marrtin" well a short time later Hugh's wool passed all GRRM and made it to #1.
I bet GRRM saw that at home one day and must have laughed to himself thinking, OMG, that guy was serious, lol. :)

The UK release was in January. The US hardback will have a dust jacket, if that makes a difference to anyone. And if you order a book from one of his US tour stops those should be 1st printings.

Alright. Just called books inc. in Berkeley and confirmed that Hugh will be there on 19 March from 7pm to about 830, and of course he will be signing books. I put two HC on hold (one for simon). Also I asked if they had the first printing (since there was a "small print run" and they were already on the second printing. The guy checked the HC he had - and it never made mention of first (or second) printing - so my assumption is these will be the first printings (I assume the seconds will say so).

If anyone else is interested PM me and I can see if I can add to my order (they didn't need any cc info up front either) - and if you want it personalized, etc. I might even have my UK edition by then to get that inscribed as well.

Oh - and let's see if anyone else will join me at this event.

cit74

Oh yeah - in regards to the books if you could let me know by this Sunday morning that would be great - that way I will wait until then to add any extra books and just make one call - and getting done early. But it was interesting since in Hugh's blog he says:

You might be out of luck! As you may know, Simon & Schuster are doing a simultaneous paperback and hardback release. I love the idea of this, as it gives more options to the reader. The problem is, they didn’t order very many hardbacks in the initial print run. They’ve already ordered a second printing, and the book isn’t even out yet!

I checked with my first book signing venue, and they’ve had quite a few pre-orders for hardbacks. One customer ordered TEN copies! This makes my heart sing, but it means you probably want to pre-order a hardback at the bookstore where I’ll be signing if you want to guarantee you’ll get one. I expect most stores will have more paperbacks than hardbacks. I’d hate for someone to drive a long way and not find the book they need once they get there!

If you are coming to one of my twelve stops to see me, you face a bit of a choice. Do you order the book ahead of time and bring it with you? This guarantees you have a copy, but the bookstore loses the sale. Or do you chance them having enough in order to support the bookstore? What if they run out?

Here’s what I propose: Wait and get a copy at the bookstore (in fact, get two or three copies. They make great gifts!). If anyone is left out, I’ll do what I’ve always done with my own versions: I’ll sign and personalize the book and ship it straight to you. I’ll get Simon and Schuster to help out, or I’ll buy the books myself to make it happen.

I would much rather the bookstore sell what they have than be stuck with a ton of stock. We’ll make sure everyone gets a book — I promise. And be sure to bring any of those rare and collectible print-on-demand books you may have.

If you are going to want a hardback instead of a paperback, call the bookstore ahead of time and make sure they ordered some. See how many they are going to get or if you can pre-order a copy. There weren’t many hardbacks printed to begin with, so the first printing is definitely going to sell out. Plan ahead of time. Can’t wait to meet you all in person!

Okay wanted people's thoughts on this one - it's an arc of the wool series - 5 books - not signed - seller countered with $250.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wool-Omnibus-by-Hugh-Howey-UK-1st-1st-ARC-1-2-3-4-5-Uncorrected-Proof-RARE-/261179806320?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item3ccf879270

I don't want to pay that much - but I can get these all individually signed at the event on the 19th - is $200 an okay price? Or still too much?

Thanks

Does it have the yellow band around the five books? I don't see mention of it in the description. Only a couple have sold on eBay in England at around £125-140. They were not signed. Unfortunately I could not make any of the UK signings and so could not get my proof signed.
Don't know if that helps?

Any idea of about how many were published? That seems a very high price of a possible "flash in the pan" book. If the series really takes off, it could be a good deal at the asking price, but if it doesn't, you've paid way too much.

Doesn't matter for the arc's - someone bought them for $225 - which is good since my wife just bought a few dresses here in Vegas.

I'm pretty sure the one in Berkeley will have HC - since the guy in the store was looking at one to give me edition info. Although I had to place a "special order". If anyone else is interested just let me know by tomorrow morning -i will call the store Sunday afternoon - once I get back from Vegas to see if I can add some more.

Well I got lucky and got one from abebooks for $50 including shipping. Unfortunately the yellow band tears easily (it looked like most for sale with the band had tears), and mine tore in transit. Recently the ones I have seen for sale have been w/o the band. To me, the band, torn or not, increases the value.

John, not sure how many were made but I think I saw that 200 were made available for the Australian market. I've been looking for a Shift arc but no luck so far. I think Shift will have much less printed due to the popularity of Wool so far.

ok - so I have 5 HC on order (you know who you are) - the store actually has nothing on hand right now for the event - so I reserved 5 copies. The person I spoke with said they should be getting the stock in before the signing (I can only hope) - so I guess this is still pretty low on the radar. Not sure how many HC they were planning on getting for the event either - so these could be first or second printings - will find out that day.

Just got my s/l from Goldsboro in the mail yesterday.

Make sure to sign up for the newsletter - since that is how they'll announce the sale of the final s/l book. But I'm sure someone here will remind us, plus the shift book obviously is taking longer to sell than wool - so I figure it will take awhile longer to sell the last one.

I think it's taking longer to sell as the first s/l was part of their book of the month club, which would mean they had less to sell to the general public.

Its funny - I guess B&N was not happy with his book deal - and actually many (most) will not have them in stores for the release tomorrow. I called my local B&N and they had none, nor any planned to have on hand tomorrow. I mentioned he would be in town next week for a book signing and the store manager went and ordered several for the store - should arrive in 2-3 days (one reserved for me). I will check it out and see how much they actually ordered and if they are the first printing (my guess is yes since they were already in the warehouse). On his blog - everyone had the same response that their B&N did not have them but could order and ship to home...

I think the best bet would be to get one from Goldsboro in UK. Those were printed by century (same book as the s/l) - they still have HC (signed). Those should all be 1/1. I won't know about the simon schuster books until I get one in hand (should be at my B&N in 2 days).

I was just kidding about selling Simons books - and no I don't think hugh meant me (yet) since I won't meet him until Tuesday - but he might after that - since I'm bring a US arc, UK arc (would've been 2 if mine arrives from UK), and a set of first prints of original books, plus shift books x 2, and a plethora of new HC. Alas those are not all my books - divided out between 4 other members here. I'll post a pic of all the books before heading out.

Love the ARC's

I'm unclear on the publish on demand books. Do those books have number lines? Or did they also publish regular paperbacks?

Joe315
03-16-2013, 12:11 PM
There aren't number lines but IIRC when he changed the cover art or contents the copyright page was changed to say second edition. So there aren't ways to identify first printings but first editions can be identified by the original cover art. At least I think that is the case.

This is the first I've heard of this author. I bought the kindle omnibus (for $4) to see what all the fuss is about.

I actually sent an email to Hugh asking about sending him books to be signed (since I will not have everything for tonight) - he replied the same day and actualy sent me his address and said absolutely. Here is his email: hughhowey@gmail.com

Well I went ahead and plunked down $5 on the Wool Omnibus. Looks like it has so many great reviews. Not looking to collect another author but always up for a good read.

Anyone know if Amazon is still selling first printings? I'd like to try to find an unsigned 1/1 copy from somewhere...

I just went to my local B&N today - they had three 1/1 HC - I had called last week and asked them to order them - and they did. You could always check there and have them order if they do not have any - then you would know for sure

Okay - this will be a bit long (enjoy).
Just returned from Hugh's signing in Berkeley and we all had a great time. I had a brain fart and didn't realize the signing was in an area of town that we've been to over a dozen times. I've walked past and into the bookstore. So we arrived a little more than an hour before the signing and figured we would grab a quick bite to eat at the local Mexican restaurant - it was quick and Steph could do a little shipping before the book event too. Usually Hugh had posted where he was going to eat before his events, but he had not done so for this one. So after we order our food and turn around - who is sitting around a group of about 10 people. - yep Mr. Howey. So we go over and say hi - and he proceeds to grab another table and add to the group and they invite us to join them.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/chadtarter/Hugh%20Howey/HH5_zps79d0ff1b.jpg

So that's where we sat and ate before the event - it was awesome. Probably the best story though was asking how everyone else had gotten into Wool. Well the women around the table were all friends and knitters - yes knitters - and one of them had inked up a book they thought was about wool - there was never really any information about knitting in the book, however they were hooked and spread the word to each other to read about the "other" wool.

Then it was off to the reading - it was a nice, intimate group - about 50 or so I think. Hugh talked about his writing process, life events that were the basis of many of the stories in wool. Also some information as to the movie part of wool as well. Most of the time was opened up to questions from the audience.

Alright - wasn't sure how many pics I could fit in one reply - so after the Q&A. I got in line with several bags of books (I got near the end since I felt bad that I had over 20 books). Seriously - here they are after the event:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/chadtarter/Hugh%20Howey/HH9_zps6a6dccec.jpg

Sorry for the iPhone photo - but I wanted to get these up quickly once we returned home. Hugh was great and took his time with everyone. He would pose for pictures as well.

I also mentioned to hugh that we had started his thread here - and he asked for the website. So I emailed him tonight with a link to the forum and his thread - so who knows he might pop in and say hello.

I know there was a question above about first vs second printings of the individual wool books - here is a pic of my books:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/chadtarter/Hugh%20Howey/HH10_zpsf4ea6e59.jpg

The only one with a second printing is book 1. The first printing is top left, the second is top middle. Everything else is a first printing (I do not think the were second printings of books 2-5).

I also asked for one quote - in untangled - book #4 - the last line by Jules - which is one of my favorites in all of the books:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/chadtarter/Hugh%20Howey/HH11_zpsd1d739b7.jpg

I can't think of anything else to write - please feel free to ask away - and I'll try my best to answer any questions. Everyone who asked for a signed HC - I have those and I will get with everyone to figure out best way for shipping, although realistically I won't be able to get the, out until Saturday or early next week (the work week will be pretty busy).

Did I say I had a great time at my first book signing event? I hope so, since we all had a wonderful time - and hugh was great and really down to earth, engaging open and honest (he did mention his next book might delve into erotica. - to sure how serious he was, guess we will have to wait and see...:)

Wondeful read, thaks Cit!

I mailed him for signing the shift-books he offered on his Homepage and he answered in minutes... He also informed me then that he will be joining Germany in in the end of the year for a reading tour! I am really looking forward to it.

At the moment he is still a author for the readers and it seems that he spends lot of time in answering his readers, but i really HOPE for him that his success will be so huge that he soon cannot handle all the fan-requests and need an own office! That means money and reputation for this friendly author!

Back to the book. I am now around page 300 and i love it!

P.S.: I am searching for the self-published Wool 1 ! If someone knows something, please let me know!

I think with all of the social media these days, being accessible is much easier. One of my favorite authors, David Morrell (the creator of Rambo), posts daily Facebook updates and responds to posts left by others. I once emailed him some questions about one of his books and received a response from him within hours. I imagine it is easier replying to a inbox full of emails than it is trying to reply to stacks of fan mail.

Posted this in my own thread, so sorry for double-post, but thought someone might be interested here too.

And starting the Hugh Howey collection:

Wool UK 1/1 Goldsboro identical to the trade HC UK 1/1 but limited and signed and numbered and slipcased 265/500

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/25864113/books/Howey Hugh_Wool_Goldsboro_limit.jpg

Wool US 1/1 from amazon(!) - so they really sold first/first - imho the US-version is more interesting due to the classic two colored book-binding, the golden title on the side and the slipcased with a feelable structure on it

I picked up a trade PB of Wool to read now but I just went ahead and preordered the others in hardcover... so I added a hardcover of Wool to my Amazon shopping basket for good measure. Any idea if the Wool copies that Amazon is selling are still 1st printings? Not that I care too much.

*edit: I'm talking about the UK trade editions.

So I finished WOOL this past weekend. While it was a good story and an enjoyable read, I don't think it is "THE GREATEST SCI-FI BOOK OF THIS GENERATION."

1) The whole plot idea of people finding out they are being lied to and then choose to rebel has been done many times before.
2) With the exception of Jules, there was little to no character development. Characters had names, but most of them had no background info to go with their story, so they didn't lead me to care for them or what happened to them at all.
3) Too much time happened between certain events without more detail. IT successfully defends themselves against the initial assault, then the story jumps three weeks ahead where the battle is still going on. Where did that time go? Was their any resistance? What happened? Also, we go from Lukas being led to cleaning to it being Bernard instead. What happened when Peter turned and went to arrest him? What was said between Bernard to Lukas and Peter while this was going on? What was the reaction of the other people when this was going on? More story was needed here rather than simply moving ahead.

A good story, and I will read SHIFT and then DUST when it comes out, but years from now, I don't think the story is going to be remembered as a classic. If the movie ever gets made, it might help, but just because the rights were sold, doesn't mean the movie will ever happen.

I have not finished shift yet (a couple books are ahead in the queue) - so I will reserve any comments until finishing that to see how well Hugh ties things together - to fill in some of the gaps you mentioned and character development.

Keep in mind many questions are answered in the Shift series and the character development gets much better. The whole story with Jules is just a opening sequence if you will, to the world of wool/shift/dust. Its just the beginning:)

There's an article in the current issued of Wired looking at the state of the book publishing industry. A good portion of the article talks about Hugh's success and uses him as an example of recent authors with great success at self publishing. Before he signed the 6 figure print only deal with Simon & Schuster, the Wool books were already bringing in $120k a month for him. Impressive for a self published book.

Yes, the self published version and the UK version (I'm guessing that you are referring to the self published version though).

So just the name is the self-published one, and the item pictured at amazon with the NY Times part is the UK edition? Wondering why amazon in the US would have that picture...

This is the self published cover. The one with the NY times blurb appears to be the ebook version. I mentioned the UK version only because they have a paperback edition as well.

Wow, that's a small run indeed. I ended up with one signed 1st and two unsigned 1sts, so I decided to put one of the unsigned ones up on eBay. I have a lot of watchers right now. Hopefully, they will all join in and make the final sale price decent. Might as well try to make a little extra cash while the buzz is still hot.

Good luck - ill keep an eye on to see how it goes. The description for all the others are pretty bad - don't mention what printing - but I assume they are not 1st - hopefully they'll read your description. I guess I had close to 0.5% of the first editions pass through my hand to be bought and shipped out.

It was a small print run - I emailed hugh and asked him directly - here is his reply:

It was very small. I think around 3,000 copies. The second printing was even smaller at 2,500. And then the third print run was another 3,500 or so.

The UK s/l HC of Shift is released tomorrow - Goldsboro. If it is anything like wool - goldsboro released the unsigned version shortly after the s/l copy of wool. The US version came out about 2 months after the UK HC of wool. Also Hugh mentioned doing another book tour this summer for the release of Shift - so I would venture shift this summer 2013 and then Dust mid 2014 - he is 1/2 done writing dust - he keeps an update on his blog.

As much as I enjoying the series, I don't see any of Hugh's books holding values in the long run. Some people are just trying to capitalize on his current popularity, just like they did with Justin Cronin. When you look on eBay at Cronin's books, it is the same books listed over and over again with no takers. I think they same will happen with Hugh's books. If you are a fan, then certainly collect for the sake of collecting.

Well Lauterer,

He is coming to the show because I invited him to! I noticed that Dust was being published on the 17th of August which is the weekend before our show. I co-own and run the show, and figured that it was the perfect time for him to go promoting so I dropped Mr Howey and email and he was really interested in attending. As far as traditional authors at comic shows go, yes there are some. Not many, but I try and make my show well rounded. We have Media Guests, Comic guests, and now our first full-fledged author! Pretty cool huh? I am interested to see what Mr Howey's fan reaction will be like at our show.

For all of you WOOL fans...

"An adaptation of Hugh Howey’s bestselling dystopian novel Wool by comics veterans Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and illustrator Jimmy Broxton, where the remnants of humanity live in a massive silo hundreds of stories below the surface of the ruined and toxic landscape of Earth. Wool was a #1 bestseller in the Kindle store and is one of the most-reviewed science fiction novels on Amazon, with almost 6,000 customer reviews. It will be released as a Kindle Serial, as six individual comics issues starting in October 2013, followed by a collected graphic novel in 2014."

From Hugh on his website regarding US Shift and Dust hardbacks.

"The only hardbacks will be from Random House in the UK. We haven’t found a publisher here in the States to do a print-only deal for SHIFT or DUST."

This is strange after Simon & Schuster sold so much HC´s...

But good for the limited Goldsboros edition, they will soon be out and get rarities...

I'm happy I have a copy of both of those coming but it is puzzling that no one picked up the rights for a US hardback release

If I remember correctly, Hugh wants to retain the eBook rights to his stories, and the deal he struck with S&S to print Wool in hardcover was very unique. Maybe they decided they didn't want to do the same deal for the other two books.

Hugh now offers the "ugly" final edition of his series Dust (http://www.hughhowey.com/the-ugly-edition/)with the atomic symbol ONLY over his own website! He will not offer much of the books i think, so if you need this should be fast to order... muahahahaaaaaaaaa

I love this guy!

No, just don't enter a name before you add it to the cart. At least that is what I did.
