Updating 25 Jan 2014; hell, it's only been a year since I said I'd finish! Updating the full-shelf photos and descriptions here on Page 1 and adding a ton more towards the end. Hopefully be done tonight. I'm also using photobucket for the first time versus uploading to the gallery; gallery takes far too long and I've got too many photos. The downside is that photobucket photos never show up on my phone, I only get the little blue question mark.

Great start to the photos. Where did you order your shelves?

Dan, I had them made locally at "The (Not Just) Oak Place", about 5 minutes down the road from where I live here in C-Springs. They can make anything to order, and prices are great for hardwood; these were $235 apiece, plus another $40 to have them lacquered. Here's the website:

Very nice collection! Some real collectibles :)

About the well-read reading copies: what are the details about the Waste Lands one from Signet? The spine looks different than my copy.

Congratulations on both the "Holy Grail" and the excellent book cases.
The Collection thread looks great and don't worry about those empty shelves, next time you turn around you'll notice you've ran out of room... Again!! :)

01-26-2014, 11:14 AM
Thanks everybody. It wasn't so much holding back as just never making the time to take and post individual photos. I usually post when I get something in, just never in Collections. Most everything on these two pages, with the exception of SK trades, I've gotten in the past three and a half years or so. I'm actually thinking about re-editing the whole thread, just making it the discreet sections (remarques, proofs/arcs, S/Ls, trades, flatsigned), and then just adding to those sections when something new comes in. Do that vs adding things in random order at end of thread.

I was actually inspired to get off my duff and post photos by our newest member Amber, she was so excited to learn and show her collection ... so thank you Amber!

I thought it was the other way around John! Since I ID'd the two different types ... what was it, two years ago now? ... I thought the sticker one was the more scarce. I don't have one of those!

Now you guys have got me curious. Just how scarce is that DRAWING OF THE THREE orange proof? What's the value of one with the sticker and one without the sticker? Mine has a sticker, and I wish I could remember what I paid for it! It wasn't much though, so I guess I got a good deal.

I paid $131 for my copy with sticker in 2006.

John

George at C-Springs
01-26-2014, 04:16 PM
Okay, so get this. I keep all of my receipts, so I went downstairs to pull the one out of my orange plume proof ... and mine has a sticker on it. I didn't even look at it yesterday because I knew I already had a photo in my gallery, so I just used that one. Now what I'm thinking is that the one in my photo, sans sticker, is the one that I ID'd two or three years ago, whenever it was, in some auction. I'd sent the photo to John asking if there was a difference between the two (I had just started collecting proofs) and wanted to know why that one was different because it wasn't mentioned in his thread. John said hey, brand new variety of the orange proof, promptly posted the info .... and somebody else outbid me for it at the auction. I don't think I've seen another since then, and my copy is boring old garden variety stickered.

Not that I'm bitter. :arg:

For whatever reasons, I can't drop you a personal note, George at C-Springs, so I'll just ask here: Regarding the US ARCs of Bag of Bones and Hearts in Atlantis...do they have a letter to booksellers/reviewers from King? I've been trying to find these letters (plus a letter from King to booksellers/reviewers in the US ARC of The Green Mile - and no, not the Foreword: A Letter piece) and they're very difficult to track down. Maybe someone here can help? I'm thinking of a scan of the letters, not the actual physical letters.

jhanic
05-08-2014, 08:18 AM
Danishfan, there was a second state of the ARC of Bag of Bones that was personally inscribed by King addressed to individual booksellers, limited to about 100 copies (see post #21 in my collections thread). I don't think I've ever see a publisher's letter for either title, though.

(By the way, you need five posts to be able to send a PM to another member.)

Ah ok, well, here's my fourth post, I think;) I do know that the BoB letter was reprinted in the limited magazine, Bag of Bones: A Preview (plus its very first appearance was the very short intro in KING etc..) I have both of these, but I'm always interested in the first appearances. The Hearts in Atlantis letter was included in the Pocket Books edition of Bag of Bones as the afterword (in a bit longer or shorter version - can't recall which). They also both appeared on Simon & Schuster's websites. The Green Mile letter, however, is seemlingly impossible to find although I have a text version of it somewhere (or a transcript).

DanishFan - Sorry for the delay in responding, I haven't been in Collections in awhile. Thanks for answering John ... I was going to say that I'll have to check when I get home tonight, but no, I don't remember seeing a Publisher's Letter. But I'll check, just in case!

No sweat;) I believe they are called reviewer's letters and some of the ARCs has a publisher's letter (from Scribner) and/or a reviewer's letter (from King).

George at C-Springs
06-08-2014, 08:57 PM
DanishFan & John - Well, as surprised as I was to find them, my Hearts in Atlnatis had both a Publisher's Letter and a letter from King. The King letter is not signed in pen, it's a photocopy, and appears to be Steve instead of Stephen. Bag of Bones only has the Publisher's Letter printed on the first page, not a separate insert as these are.

George, scans would be great, thanks;) Super that you found them. But funny that the Hearts in Atlantis letter was in the Bag of Bones ARC - I wonder where the shorter letter about Bag of Bones are then? That one begins with something like King looking at the calendar and he saw 50 staring at his face (his birthday) - it was actually also first excerpted as the short intro in KING etc.

The way I see it (and I could of course be very wrong) is that the front and back page-info is an error. The one page displayed here seems like the right version to me. Personally, I'm always interested in the letters written by King, not so much in the letters written by Moldow or others. But it's so great to finally have this - now we just need the Bag of Bones letter (the UK version has been displayed here) and The Green Mile letter.

George at C-Springs
06-09-2014, 09:01 AM
Both letters are single-sided. The King letter is single-spaced as well, it's a long letter; I could see that if it were reproduced in a book or were 1.5 or double-spaced that it would go at least two pages and maybe more.

Nice surprise to find a 'lost' item in the collection, and glad to help you guys out.

Yeah, it runs four pages in the Bag of Bones Pocket Books paperback (where it's represented as an untitled afterword of a sort to promote HiA). That version was also slightly longer, though, as King mentions the last story in HiA (Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling)...there's no mention of it in the ARC letter.

Second paragraph from the bottom, the line after "Why We're in Viet Nam" he mentions "Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling". See, now I'm going to have to go and read the whole darn thing.

You're right...I assume then it's the version in BoB that doesn't mention that story. Will compare them in a short while.

Nope, sure didn't ... ordered it through CD when they had a 10% CDCC discount, and slipcase wasn't part of the deal. I just dropped it in a bag and put it on the shelf next to the signed trade.

Also really like the 50's style art. The only thing missing? A slipcase, or slipcases ... of course. I'm thinking of a very cool Dolso case!

As someone else mentioned, nothing special about these editions other than the limitation page; they are essentially trades with signatures. Covers are bound in cloth/linen; endpapers are textured; and there are no illustrations (greatly disappointing but not surprising).

I'm a WWII history buff, so getting to meet some of the Navajo Code Talkers is always a pleasure. Picked up two books which they all signed. The Unbreakable Code is a kid's book, very nicely illustrated, if you're interested in teaching a youngster about the history of the Code Talkers. It's told from the perspective of one of the original 29.

So George, you're looking to get each state of the CD unbound proof right? On these unbounds I've been fine with just one of the versions. Was just curious about your collecting goals on those.

George at C-Springs
09-07-2015, 09:19 AM
Since I already had the "tough" ones (before the black tape showed up), I figured what the hell might as well get all three states of the unbound and make it a complete set. Only doing it for FDNS, not the others. Of course, unless more black tapes show up its an exercise in futility anyway!

zelig
09-07-2015, 09:25 AM
Okay makes sense. That's a lofty goal for sure. And yeah with proof collecting you're right about exercises in futility. My overall goal with my proof collection is to take it as far as I can with what's available out there currently. Having a "complete" collection is highly improbable. My feeling is that you have various ideas on what you would consider complete when it comes to proofs. I'm inching toward my initial goal on them. All that's left are some of the rare to ultra-rare ones.

jonp
