View Full Version : 2013 Oscar Contest

Still Servant

It's that time of year again. All of the smaller awards shows have come and gone and the biggest of them all is right around the corner - The Oscars. I think it's been an amazing year for film. Maybe the best year I've ever seen. There were so many great films released this year and I've seen most of them. That should make Oscar night that much more exciting.

This is the fourth year I'm running the Oscar contest. I think we had the most participants last year, which was great. I'm hoping to build on that this year. We always have a lot of fun predicting the winners and seeing who comes out on top. It's just for fun.

As some of you may remember, we had a three way tie for first place last year. Because of this, we will be adding a tie breaker. The tie breaker is simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, who ever has the closest number without going over is the winner.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, who ever has the closest number without going over is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have a few weeks until Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions. I still have films to watch, buzz to follow and articles to read.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess. Hell, you can have your pet monkey put its finger on the film he or she thinks is going to win, I don't care. As long as you have made a guess for every category. By the way, if you have pet monkey, kudos to you.

I would also ask for this thread to remain by itself until after Oscar night. Then it would be fine to merge it with the other Oscar thread. I just think it's best to keep this separate for now. Thanks.

Excellent, I've been waiting for you to start this thread. I like the idea of the tiebreaker as well. I'll post up my predictions within the next few weeks.

Can't wait! I haven't seen any of the BP nominees yet (gasp) so I probably won't be posting mine for awhile.

And the tie breaker idea sounds great. Guess that's the only way to make sure Heather can't win by herself this year.

Grrr. You didn't merge it last year. Also, merging the two threads might make it harder for people to find and copy the nomination list and read the rules. Alas, I will bend the knee.

It doesn't have to be a few hours before showtime, it could be a few minutes. As long as it's in before the show starts, you're fine. Using standard Eastern time by the way. The show has an official start time of 8pm Eastern Time, but that includes Red Carpet special. The actual show won't start until 8:30. To make it simple for people, I say get it in by 8pm ET.

I'm not sure what anyone else thinks but Best Supporting Actor is such a stacked and unpredictable of all the categories, with the only one I don't think has a shot is Arkin. I'll have to mull that category over a lot.

TIE BREAKER:
Les Misérables 5

Mattrick

I just watched Life of Pi and it definitely has Best Visual and Production Direction in the bag. I do think Ang Lee stands a very high chance of winning Best Director as well.

So is Production Direction now taking the place of Art Direction? Is it the same thing?

I just wanted to thank everybody for playing. I urge everybody to check their own sheets, for it's late and I'm tired. That being said, I feel that would be fairly futile. Heather won pretty easy this year. I'm the closest person to her and I can assure you that although math was not a strong subject for me, there's no way I'm making up 3 points. I would have liked to see more people participate this year, but it is what it is.

I really enjoyed the show, I'm looking forward to posting my thoughts on all the winners, losers and the whole night in general at a more humanly hour. Good night, and Argofuckyourselves.

Ang Lee baby! Almost got the most oscars and number of right. I went dark horse even against the certainty of day lewis and argo. I almost aced the techincal awards...should have chosen les miserables for sound mixing. My favourite awards are the screenplay, editing and director so glad to see the right people win. No complaints at all except reminding me of Chicago. Out of the 18 choices I could actually judge I got 13 right. We need more people involved next year!

That's okay, we'd love for you to participate. You can just guess. It's just for fun.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the show. I know it was long, but that's just the way it is. It honestly doesn't bother me. I thought Seth MacFarlane did a really nice job. He's from my home state of Connecticut so I was rooting for him. I liked the opening, although I could have done without the dance numbers. I thought the "We saw your boobs" song was really funny.

I was also happy with most of the winners. I can't think of one that I was disappointed in. I was surprised, yet happy to see Waltz win. I would have been happy with anybody from the Best Supporting Actor category winning. That proves how strong of a year it was. In fact, I would have been pleased if at least 5 films won for best picture. I really enjoyed the cast of Les Mis performing. I thought Adele was great as usual. I would have loved for every Bond to appear on stage. Thought that would have been great.

I can't express enough how much I love Oscar night. Ever since I was a kid, my family and I would gather around the TV and watch the whole show. I just love the celebration of film and there really isn't any other awards show like it. It's kind of sad once it's over. On the bright side, it means there are a whole new crop of films to see before next years awards and new worlds to explore and new characters to meet. This is a great time to be a movie buff. Here's hoping 2013 is as strong as 2012.

Mike, by my count I got 15 right. :P

And congrats, Heather! Next year...next year...

Hmm, I checked again and I still got 14. Unless I'm wrong on one of the winners. Here's what I got for the ones you got correct:

Best picture
Best actor
Best supporting actress
Animated feature
Foreign film
Original song
Cinematography
Costume
Documentary
Editing
Animated short
Sound editing
Sound mixing
Visual effects

The correct number won't change the outcome of the winner, but I would like to get the correct amount for the archives. :cool2:

Yup, that's the one. Good catch. I also found a mistake I made with Feev's sheet. Apologies all around.

I bet you use a 'most likely to win' cheat sheet, don't you? CHEATER

I nominate from my beer gut. And in the cases where I didn't know what the films were I chose the ones with the coolest sounding names LOL

 No, but I do do my research. There are a few categories that are usually a lock in to win. Then I just go with my gut on the others, or who I want to win

Wow! You're so right. I didn't even think of that. That's really weird.

Was I the only one who seemed they were reaching for people in the 'In Memoriam' video? Usually I recognize at least a dozen names and this year they put up agents and PR people...compared the year few years prior there wasn't many big names in the business who died; Tony Scott and Michael Clarke Duncan being the biggest and I did not know Ray Bradbury died.

Yeah, you might be right. Every year they include a lot of people in the industry that died and not just actors, but it seemed like more this year. I also like how they put in movie critics now. You might be right that there just weren't a lot of big names that passed away this year, which makes it odd that they didn't include people like Andy Griffith, Phyllis Diller, Jack Klugman and Larry Hagman. I know they were famous primarily for TV, but they all made films.

They included Ray Bradbury and didn't they include Steve Jobs the year before?
