View Full Version : Mr. Mercedes - New Novel, June 2014
Randall Flagg

Stephen King mentions a new novel he is working on. Not supernatural, but a detective novel involving a person who drove a car into a crowd of people and then taunted the Detective who handled the case after his retirement.
Apparently what started as a short story has turned into a 500 page manuscript.

With two books scheduled for 2013 that is understandable. It still is a topic that King mentioned and someone has to be an "early" poster about it.
Sounds great. I think this was already mentioned by someone in the main UMass thread, but it's good to have a separate thread for it to keep track of its progress. I'm really enjoying King exploring non-supernatural stories, such as with some of his recent short stories, and likely Joyland and also this upcoming novel.

Joyland does have a supernatural element -- it's the first Hard Case Crime book to do so.

Fascinating interview. He discusses the new book from ~6:20-15:38 in the video.
And I believe he also talks a bit about it toward the end of the talk.

This one doesn't sound all that interesting. SK must be on some kind of hard boiled Raymond Chandler detective kick. I tend to prefer the old fashioned horror story, but I'll still read them all.
I'm with King when he says that you can call him a "horror writer" but that's not exactly what he is and it's great seeing him doing more mainstream literature. Of course we know that Doctor Sleep will be an old-school horror novel, but he's done several things recently that make me think "Mr. Mercedes" (or whatever it'll eventually be called) will be a great, harsh book - and scary! - in the vein of the stories in "Full Dark, No Stars".
P.S.: I do hope the title gets changed.

Yes I inquired about this at SKMB, Ms. Mod stated it would be at least 2014 before we see this one, and Mr. Mercedes is a working title that King isn't real happy with.
Not suprising since he already has 2 books out in 2013 and at the time of this talk this book was only 3/4 done.
Joyland does have a supernatural element -- it's the first Hard Case Crime book to do so.
I have to beg to differ on this, Colorado Kid, while not having an explicit supernatural element, does have an air of supernatural to it.
Bev Vincent

I"m quoting Charles Ardai, who I interviewed recently. Colorado Kid has an air of the inexplicable, but nothing overtly supernatural. Apparently in Joyland, things are more overt.

King, 65, now has more than 350 million copies of his works in print. Two new books, "Joyland" and "Doctor Sleep," are being published this year and another, "Mr. Mercedes," will be released in 2014.
Coming next after "Doctor Sleep" is a detective novel due out next year titled "Mr. Mercedes." Though it was written before the Boston Marathon bombing, it has a similar plot element, King says.

Question and answer about Mr. Mercedes and Revival on SK´s message board
Hi Marsha,
I was just listening to the CBC interview with Stephen and Owen, and Stephen said that he wasn't working on anything at the moment.
Can we take that to mean that he has fully finished editing Mr. Mercedes, or that he has completed the first draft of Revival?
Moderator
Ms. Mod
..It means that those aren't in his queue at the moment and he's waiting for the editors to do their thing. Release dates have been set but I don't think I'm at liberty to give that information out yet so (didn't want to disappoint GNTLGNT ).

The night after the King appearance in Toronto some old lady struck about 20 cars before knocking over a power line. I haven't seen any explanation in the press as to what happened. Maybe she is Mrs. Mercedes.
Seems June 2014 is confirmed for this novel. CD has the ISBN (978-1476754451) and page length (500): http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/PROD/o_king100 But I can't find any other confirmation, other than a page at Amazon Japan.

I actually think this is a story that would go better with the "Hard Case Crime" line over Joyland (unless they only do certain lengths, Joyland and Colorado Kid are both pretty small).

Here's the official plot summary, hidden in case you don't want to know anything more.
In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.
In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.
In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.
Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.
Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

I agree with you, TN but maybe it is something that is pertinent to the story itself? The "Synopsis" states that the bulk of the story takes place after he does his Mr. Mercede's-thing and that the stakes are even higher, so....

And I thought the cover of Dr. Sleep was bad. This one is awful. For some reason, the style reminds me of NOS4A2 cover. There are a lot of references and themes to the JFK assassination in King's works. One of the stranger images from that day was the "Umbrella Man" holding an open umbrella on the street as JFK was assassinated.

Yes. I like the cover fine, don't need to have the Mercedes on the cover - it's a silly title as it is, it was a working title that stuck, but it probably will make more sense once we read the novel. And the cover will also make sense once we read the novel. I like simple, so this is nice.

In my experience advertising agencies shy away from anything depicting murder or death in conjunction with their brands. Especially car manufacturers...

Detroit is the 3rd largest city in the Midwest, but there are several other cities that could easily fit the description. Cleveland and St. Louis certainly are "distressed".

I think it would be cool if it turned out to be this:
"It sprawled along the verge of the lake like a string of dirty pearls made clean with the dawn" is how King described Harding, the major American Midwestern city portrayed in The Running Man and Sword In The Darkness.

I am really excited about this book... It really seems like King is going in a different direction with this one. I have a feeling the "supernatural" may be left out of it to a degree.... I think this is more thriller based. Can't wait

Good to hear. Should be very interesting.

Really?
Of course. I've always preferred the domestic covers to the UK ones, and lately they've been using a font I'm not too fond of. Back in the '80s and '90s Viking used the same font for King's name on the cover as well (which was cool and unique enough), and Scribner in the late '90s and early 2000s, but then went to unique designs for each book. That's what I like, diversity. Plus they put quotes about how great King is on UK covers which I find wholly redundant. If need be, those can go on the inside flap or something, not the front cover.
herbertwest
02-22-2014, 10:46 AM
Beside the font and the quote (which I do not pay attention), what about the actual artwork? I really don't like the US cover. There is something... odd with it. The UK cover looks more realistic, which is... scarier I guess.

This is pure speculation but I believe that the more people get used to reading books in electronic format, the larger the chance is that printed proofs for reviewing purposes will disappear.
I am sure that in-house pre-publication states will continue to exist but not many of those will end up in collector's hands.
I do not fear for the future of the printed book, by the way. But proofs?

If there are no more proofs, than yours should increase in value over time, no? A similar thing occurred when, Disney stopped producing hand painted cells. They switch to computer generated and the value of the painted ones sky rocketed.

I'd spend $200 on "Mr Mercedes" to read it early - but I wouldn't go beyond that, regardless of the condition of the proof, I don't collect proofs, when I manage to buy them I just do so to read them. One went on ebay in almost fine condition for $255 (seller wouldn't ship outside usa so I missed it), another went in perfect condition for $365 (i was outbid on that one). So yeah if I manage to grab a copy for $200, cool. If not, I've decided I can wait.

I think this is a perceived exaggeration based on recent books. Danny in Dr Sleep is an alcoholic, but thats an understandable vehicle for the story as it continues "the sins of the father" as Jack Torrance was also an alcoholic. 11/22/63 had references to alcoholism and AA meetings (Jake Epping's wife is a recovering alcoholic)
Drunks and alcohol feature in many of his works, but I can't think of any other novels with a central character or plot line based around alcoholism.

I think that confirms my statement. None of these are either central to the plot or major characters. Pick any modern contemporary novel that has plenty of characters. Almost certainly one of them will be drunk as part of the story.
EDIT: Doesn't even have to be contemporary. I'm pretty sure the Dwarves get drunk more than once in Lord of the Rings, not to mention Bilbo....

Publishers Weekly review
In this suspenseful crime thriller from megaseller King (Doctor Sleep), ex-detective Bill Hodges is settling badly into his retirement. Then he receives a taunting letter from someone who claims to be the Mercedes Killer—the media's name for the hit-and-run driver who, a year earlier, deliberately plowed a stolen car into a crowd at a job fair, killing eight and maiming 15. Hoping to wrap up the unsolved case, Hodges follows the letter writer to an anonymous social media chat site, inaugurating a game of cat and mouse with escalating stakes and potentially fatal consequences. Bill's antagonist is Brady Hartsfield, a sociopath who is skilled in computers and electronics and who—with a touch of brilliant irony—also operates the neighborhood ice cream truck. Coincidence and luck figure significantly in the final outcome, but King excels in his disturbing portrait of Brady, a genuine monster in ordinary human form who gives new meaning to the phrase "the banality of evil." Agent: Chuck Verrill, Darhansoff & Verrill Literary Agents. (June)

On what scale? If we say King has written roughly 60 novels, I'd put this in my top 15 -- but I have a very had time with ranking things in general. The best comparison I can think of making is to Doctor Sleep, which I considered more of a thriller than a horror novel. I think I liked MM better than DS. A little. Maybe. It contains one of King's best villains ever -- a very human, very nasty, completely unlikable but ultimately fascinating guy.

Definitely a good thing. Cannot wait to read it. King's been exploring straight fiction quite a bit lately with parts of Full Dark, No Stars and new short stories like Premium Harmony and Batman and Robin.

Booklist review:
King's interest in crime fiction was evident from his work for the Hard Case Crime imprint—The Colorado Kid (2005) and Joyland (2013)—but this is the most straight-up mystery-thriller of his career. Retired Detective Bill Hodges is overweight, directionless, and toying with the idea of ending it all when he receives a jeering letter from the Mercedes Killer, who ran down 23 people with a stolen car but evaded Hodges' capture. With the help of a 17-year-old neighbor and one victim's sister (who, in proper gumshoe style, Hodges quickly beds), Hodges begins to play cat-and-mouse with the killer through a chat site called Under Debbie's Blue Umbrella. Hodges' POV alternates with that of the troubled murderer, a Norman Bates–like ice-cream-truck driver named Brady Hartfield. Both Hodges and Hartfield make mistakes, big ones, leaving this a compelling, small-scale slugfest that plays out in cheery suburban settings. This exists outside of the usual Kingverse (Pennywise the Clown is referred to as fictive); add that to the atypical present-tense prose, and this feels pretty darn fresh. Big, smashing climax, too. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: No need to rev the engine here; this baby will rocket itself out of libraries with a loud squeal of the tires. Copyright 2014 Booklist Reviews.
Sounds great, loved that device in Rose Madder, partly why I love that novel so much.
