The Twelve Days of RatMas
A Haven Fund game for the holidays

On the first day of RatMas my true love gave to me: RATS RATS AND MORE RATS

We all know that He/She Who Owns the Most Rats Wins. Well somebody (penny) already won that contest, so we need a new rat game. The unofficial name is JellyRatz – official name is The Twelve Days of Ratmas.

The game: Guess the number of rats in Glenn Chadbourne’s newest creation and you WIN.

The Prize: An 11" x 17" original, one of a kind, Glenn Chadbourne painted color illustration signed and numbered (one of one!) and created just for the winner.

The Details: Similar to Guess the number of Jellybeans in the Jar game, we’re playing Guess The Number of Rats In The Artwork game. Over the next 12 days you can guess as many times as you want for $5.00 per guess – all proceeds go to the Haven Fund. He who guesses closest to the actual number of rats in the Chadbourne original piece (described below) is the WINNER. Winner will be announced on December 26. To make your guesses just PayPal (as a gift please) $5 per guess to Randall Flagg zoidsmith@aol.com and in your PayPal note tell him your guess or guesses on how many rats you think the artwork has. Glenn is the only one who knows the actual number of rats.

The Artwork Jar: We wanted to show you the artwork but Glenn is putting on the final touches so it’s not ready to post. But we’re ready to play! So use your imaginations and envision this:
The size is 15" x 31" – Its huge. And its wall to wall rats: big rats, small rats, medium rats. You can’t think of this as the usual 8 to 10 rat piece. Little hint – more than 100 rats can easily fit on this canvas. So many rats, in fact, that it will boggle the mind.

Guess how many and you win!

The Fine Print: Last day to guess is December 24 Midnight Pacific Time. Winner will be announced December 26. In the off chance there is a tie Glenn will be tie-breaker. Your prize will be shipped in January.

Way Cool!!! Just to be clear, this is NOT a "Rat Remarque". That has to take place in a book so that title is still safe (for now!!! LOL) OK, I'm gonna make 5 guesses and send you a check to eliminate fees.

1. 100
2. 112
3. 105
4. 120
5. 130

This is so exciting!!!!! Santa AND the Haven Fund Whore all at once!!!! Who could ask for more!!! LOL

C'mon folks, $5 a pop for a $300+ art piece is a steal!!!! Get in there people!!!

Edit: Expect payment on the 18th

Not a rat remarque. An original piece for the winner 11"x17". The winner can consult with Chadbourne as to what theme for their piece.

An 11" x 17" colour painting by Glenn Chadbourne - with only the winner's imagination limiting the possibilities --- damn, wish I had of known about this BEFORE starting the Great Wall of Glenn project !!!!!! :shoot: J/OK

This is probably a dumb question, but are just guessing blind at the number of rats, or will the rat picture be posted at some point?

I hope to have an image/puzzle up by Monday-Tuesday at the latest. I understand most will wait to "see" before making a more educated guess.
I can reveal that there are more than 100 rats, and less than 1,019. Hope that helps.

Just wanted to clarify again. The winner does NOT get the oversize image that has many many rats in it. The winner gets a commissioned 11"x17" Chadbourne piece. The contents of the original are to be agreed upon by the winner and Chadbourne.

You mean this, is what we are basing "guesses" on in order to win the "real" prize, right?

If I am understanding this correctly, yes? BTW awesome theme and piece!!!! BTW, our "benefactor" for this contest now appears apparent.

Randall Flagg
12-17-2012, 03:05 PM
Yes. This is what you guess with.
Quite frankly someone here is likely to have a 1/50 chance (@$5 per guess).
I am done explaining it. At this point in time <10 unique individuals have attempted (and Ari isn't one of them). So odds are very good for a donation.

Bad Penny
12-17-2012, 09:39 PM
Not that I have any inside knowledge about this little game at all, however; I understand that, a couple of days hence, we may have something a little more ... complete ... to base your guess(es)

Very good point. Maybe I became a little overexcited.

Staying on topic some of you may be familar with author Tom Piccirilla. I don't know Tom personally but via FB I heard he was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year. From what I can gather (from FB posts) treatments have been going well and from these same posts he noted he has been assisted by The Haven foundation along with a few other named charities.

Sometimes for me I know I lose sight that places like The Haven foundation do actual good work on a daily basis for people in need. In my jumbled and disjointed way I am trying to put this whole fundraiser thing in perspective and share a real life example of the good they do.

So please chip in anyway you folks can. This is for a great cause and they help out many creative folks whose work we have enjoyed over the years.

The Ratmas contest generated $235 in donations from 10 members. I am waiting to hear from Glenn Chadbourne as to the official rat count. I hope to hear from him today.
We have raised >$435 before the official 1/1/2013 kickoff!

George at C-Springs

I'm stunned that only 10 of us entered, and sorry but am disappointed that we raised only $235. I thought this was a really good fundraising opportunity with a great prize, and expected there to be many many more entrants. Perhaps it was just the timing with the holidays, combined with the economy? Still, at just $5 a guess I thought we'd have brought in much more. Thanks to Glenn and Bad Penny for putting this together, its toward a good cause (and I think the ten entrants are pretty pleased with their odds!).

Let me throw in an edit ... I'm concerned because I'm also working to acquire a very unique item for this year's (well, next year's) fundraiser, and now am just a bit concerned that time, effort and $$$ will be for naught. Would I be better off just donating the $$$? I hope not, it's nowhere near as much fun!

We were dissapointed too. The people who came up with the idea were very excited about having the contest here. I felt that we would have been better off auctioning the opportunity for a Chadbourne original on ebay. I believe it would have generated twice the amount.
The intention was to get members involved, have a lot of fun and keep the prize in house.

That is also why when the fundraiser officially kicks off, virtually everything to be auctioned off will be on ebay-we simply get a much wider audience and more revenue even after paying listing and Paypal fees.
The other main source for donations will be the Paypal widget that will be on the top of the forum pages We get quite a few donations that way as people donate $5-$50 here and there throughout the 5 months and it isn't a significant financial burden on them.

We were dissapointed too. The people who came up with the idea were very excited about having the contest here. I felt that we would have been better off auctioning the opportunity for a Chadbourne original on ebay. I believe it would have generated twice the amount.

In retrospect, I think that greater participation may have been achieved with a deadline after Christmas rather than on midnight of the 24th. Heavy focus on other demands, distractions and logistics immediately before the holiday may be the issue rather than a purposed choice not to participate.

That said, kudos to the ten participants!

I was also hoping it would generate some bigger bucks for the HF. Cant wait to hear who won!

Anyone have any guesses as to who the other Finger Wielding fellow is?

I thought that was obvious. It's Zombie-Grant (Bad Penny)!!!

Oops, well spotted Wild Bill - I forgot that there's a happy snap of the "real" me floating around here (and, not forgetting the sometimes photo-travelogue I used to have on the CD forum - which, I add, you dragged me kicking and screaming away from - MATE !!!!) - sigh, so much anonymity

So, anyway, I'll spill some beans, not all, but some, and it may seem a little cryptic to some (tuff .. hehehehehe) but there actually was an underlying intent to the painting .... apart from being used for this fun little game that a few chose to play (and I understand the announcement of the winner is imminent)

The original title of the piece was to have been "Bad Penny's Noir Complet, Sans Etoiles Cirque de Ronguers et Squelettes" (however, Glenn couldn't squueze all of that into the banner, thus the current title will have to suffice).

Some of you that have paid attention in recent times, when using the title in conjunction with the various components of the piece, will get it, I'm sure :emot-roflolmao:

Anyways, the piece itself arrived today - so here's a preview so that those that made guesses (or thought of making guesses) can see how many rats were not as clear on on the original scan as they are here - RF, you might like to check your little lady friend out (the one whose breast you appear to covert) as she has a little more rat action going on than was apparent at first)

Got ideas for the commissioned piece?

Having come across some of Glenns art in a quaint Tavern (THE OLD GOAT) while staying in a small town in Maine I grew an appreciation for both his art and my good fortune. As noted in my post "ART Found in Maine", my wife and I by chance dropped into a small pub in Richmond Maine and while talking with the owner who was serving us cold drafts conversation ventured to Mr King. Scott asked if we had paid attention to the pictures on the wall behind us. He also noted those as well as the graphics on the outside wall had been done for him by Glenn Chadbourne. What was the chance of that happening? I have since paid more attention to Glenn's work and feel he is quite talented and feeling a connection knew I would have to join in this opportunity to give towards The Haven Foundation. Who knew karma might continue?

I DO HAVE SOME IDEAS.... Will need to see if my thoughts can meld with Glenns.
Thanks all who gave and made this possible.

After bidding and feeling lucky I started thinking about what I might like to own if I had the opportunity to hang a Chadbourne in my home.
I reviewed several items and found the work in "Colorado Kid" interesting. Living in Florida and enjoying "Duma Key" I have considered to request a scene related to it. I also considered the idea of requesting a picture of Mr. Kiing himself. Another option might be SK drawn into a scene fom "Duma Key". I do not know what the options are however I am sure Glenn could do justice to any thought I have and I would connect with it. HOWEVER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

HOWEVER>>>>>>> as much as I would love to own a piece of Chadbourne art...... I would also like to make a more sizeable donation to The Haven Foundation by offering :
The Prize: An 11" x 17" original, one of a kind, Glenn Chadbourne painted color illustration signed and numbered (one of one!) and created just for the winner.
to be auctioned with the benefits going to The Haven Foundation. (if Glenn will consider that option.)

Really nice thing to do Jim, don't know that I could/would have done the same. Then again, I wasn't really worried that I'd win ... I never win contests! Even with great odds like this one had (10 entrants, 37 guesses, 10 of those were mine, so 27% chance if I do the math right), its just not in my genes. I found my guesses in PayPal history, my closest was 137. I'm kinda bummed, had a great idea in mind for the work ... but at the same time, I'm glad the way it turned out for the Haven Fund. Like DeNiro said, "I'm real conflicted about it"! Of course, he was talking about whacking a guy, I'm not at that point. Yet.
