Wow, I'm going to have to think about this one.

I would have trouble making a list of my favorite movies this year let alone of all time.

I usually break my lists up into genres. I just have a hard time putting a movie like The Godfather up against a comedy like Young Frankenstein. It's just impossible.

I will get back to you on this.

Damn, my first run through my head I came up with 48 movies. :(

I guess I'm going to have to narrow that down.

I love reading everybody else's lists. It's cool to see what movies everybody likes.

This list has nothing to do with the quality as much of the movie but which movies I can just toss one and watch when not in the mood for any movie and enjoy. Many of these movies I've seen half a dozen times or more.

No particular order

1) Vanilla Sky
2) Matchstick Men
3) Happy Gilmore
4) Grandma's Boy
5) Terminator 2
6) Donnie Darko
7) Pulp Fiction
8) Die Hard
9) Star Wars movies (all)
10) Alien (all)
11) Zoolander
12) Dawn of the Dead (2004)
13) 28 Days Later (not 28 Days)
14) Frailty
15) Kill Bill (was intended to be one movie)
16) Batman Begins
17) X-2
18) 40 Year Old Virgin
19) Superbad
20) Silence of the Lambs
21) Boondock Saints
22) Wes Craven's New Nightmare
23) The Mist (seen it once...will many, many more times)
24) The Shining
25) Back To the Future

I like feverish's list best, so far. I love most of those movies but many of them I will only watch once every couple years so it's still amazing everytime I watch it...like Gladiator and Braveheart.

fernandito

I set the number to 25 because I thought other folks might have trouble coming up with 25 or might not participate in the thread because of the bar that was set. How wrong I was  Should we keep the number as is, or should we increase the quota to , let's say... 50?

Also, about 90% of the movies up there I watch on a regular basis (well, my favorite parts of the movies anyway). For example: I've watched the chase scene as well as the steel mill scene everyday from T2 for about a month now. :D

Zoney-poo has been kind enough to oblige my request of changing the thread title from 25 to 50 movies, seeing as how most of us were racking our brains to narrow the list down to that number. So, feel free to add the remainding 25 and/or paste your previous post and add to it. :D

Check out my first post (revised) for the complete list.

I think you've made a few mistakes in your list, hombre. Whats the worst arnie movie ever made doing in there?
Don't try and argue with me. IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes both agree.

Fuck it. Close enough.

Donnie Brasco was an awesome movie!

It's almost inconceivable when you think about it. A mole inside of two of the largest families in New York FOR HALF A DECADE, not only surviving, but managing to make a profit off of his experience.

Still Servant
01-10-2008, 07:48 AM
Yeah, Brasco doesn't get enough attention for being a great film.

I feel so bad for Pacino in that movie. One of his better roles.

Johnny Deep is also great in that movie. So is Ann Heche and Michael Madsen.

Oh yeah, I'm adding 12 Monkeys to my list. That movie just kicks ass.

 I love that line.

I have a t-shirt that says "fagetaboutit."

Also, Donnie Brasco is one of Paul Giamatti's first roles. It's kind of cool. He went to Choate Rosemary Hall where my mom works (JFK is also an alum) and I guess his family is a family friend of ours.

The closest I'll ever get to knowing somebody cool.

I'm friends with some guys from Park Slope who know Steve Buscemi-indirectly.

In fact, they were there when he got into some bar fight off the set of some film he was doing a few years ago.

I'm loving these lists :D

Jean
10-29-2008, 02:27 AM
Well, I had to make two lists: one of movies made originally in English, and the other for what you would call "foreign" movies. I didn't include any Russian movies at all, although they are my very favorite, and I could easily have made a top 100 - but I understand that nobody has no access to them anyway, so it would be no use.

List One is in chronological order (my unquestionable top three would be It's a Wonderful Life, 12 Angry Men (the original), and Casablanca). Of course it is subject to change; that's what things are like as of today:

1. San Francisco (1936, Woody Van Dyke)
2. One Hundred Men and a Girl (1937, Henry Koster)
3. Mr.Smith Goes to Washington (1939, Frank Capra)
4. Rebecca (1940, Alfred Hitchcock)
5. Citizen Kane (1941, Orson Welles)
6. Casablanca (1942, Michael Curtiz)
7. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944, Frank Capra)
8. Spellbound (1945, Alfred Hitchcock)
9. It's a Wonderful Life (1946, Frank Capra)
10. Harvey (1950, Henry Koster)
11. Singin’ in the Rain (1952, Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly)
12. Roman Holiday (1953, William Wyler)
13. Rear Window (1954, Alfred Hitchcock)
14. The Trouble With Harry (1955, Alfred Hitchcock)
15. Twelve Angry Men (1957, Sidney Lumet)
16. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957, David Lean)
17. Some Like It Hot (1959, Billy Wilder)
18. West-Side Story (1961, Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise)
19. To Kill a Mockinbird (1962, Robert Mulligan)
20. Lawrence of Arabia (1962, David Lean)
21. The Servant (1963, Joseph Losey)
22. Mary Poppins (1964, Robert Stevenson)

Note : I decided to cut the number in half for two reasons

1. 25 is a less daunting number and will perhaps encourage members to post their lists

2. I wanted people to really think about their list and force them to include their absolute BEST

I'm also inviting those that have already posted their lists to post one again without looking at the their previous post! When done, go back and compare the two lists, see how your tastes have varied/changed over the years. There are lots of new members here, so I expect to see more lists :)

Here is my revised list , in alphabetical order:

Oh you should see it. It's definitely not for everyone though. It's a pretty graphic horror film, but if you don't have a problem with that then I'd recommend it.
And I'm pretty positive Brice loves it as well :)

3 - godfather 1 & 2
4 - goodfellas
5 - the dark knight
6 - Lord of the Rings
7 - eurotrip
8 - the sting

I stopped myself at 55, since it's already more then double what I should have put down. I should wait a few days and force myself to just pick 25 "essentials" and see what I come up with.

Definitely will be adding some new movies to my Netflix queue today, that's for sure!

Darn, this is so hard, but I've been thinking on it some. Who would think it would be tough to find only 25 favorites! I have way more favorite movies than I can count, apparently.

Okay, so here's my list ( at least this week ) and you'll notice some stinkers here and I will completely own that. :P These are my favorite movies and that doesn't necessarily mean they're good movies!

In absolutely no order what so ever :

1. To Kill A Mockingbird

3. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
4. Almost Famous
5. V for Vendetta
6. Singin' In The Rain

One of my good friends was a "non-traditional student" when I met him during college, and already a great classic film buff. He set out deliberately to educate me, for which I'm very grateful. (Of course, I was already a Theatre/Literature major, so my knowledge of fiction can't be attributed entirely to that.)
I'd certainly agree that Sullivan's Travels is a fine film, I'm just slightly dubious about its moral. As you'll see if I can ever get a list down to just 25, I like dark films. I believe in serious art. But, hey, all such ethical questions are pretty complex, indeed all ethical questions are; perhaps I really am just too obsessive. :orely:
