I don't think there's a Justin Cronin Collecting thread yet, so I'll create one - I think there's sufficient interest in his work and his collectible books.

I just came across a picture of the lettered edition of THE PASSAGE (I lifted the pic from Justin Cronin's Facebook page, he happens to be one of my connections - I haven't checked the publisher's page yet):

I'm not a Cronin collector at all, but there seem to be enough people that are interested in him to have his own thread. Also, there seem to be numerous variations of that one book to keep things interesting.

Speaking as a proof collector, they seem fairly plentiful, so I'd tend to the lower of the range.

It seems like people are actively looking for the 'misprint' edition, but do the errors really add to the value of the book? Genuine question!

To me it falls in the same category as other misprints (e.g., text block bound upside down, missing or duplicate pages), I don't feel like it's a true separate and collectible state of the book. What's the consensus here?

I paid about $90 for my FINE misprint edition, which is also signed (although I didn't card whether it was signed or not).

The misprint edition is the true 1st printing, as they were recalled and corrected, if my information is correct. That makes it collectible to me.

I paid $40 for my errored copy in fine condition, also signed. It also came with a signed flyer. This was all from our own Jerome.

Isn't it possible that they were released at the same time? I find it very hard to believe they would print such a small ammount of books and release them to bookstores. This was destined to be a best-seller from the get-go, why would they print a small quantity? I believe they were released to the public at the same time and that they corrected the mistakes during the printing process.

Edit: also, if the quantity wasn't small (and I'm wrong about it), shouldn't the next batch of books with errors corrected be considered (and marked) as second printing with a number line starting with 2? You can't have two first printings. Either the one with mistakes is the first one and they forgot to change the number line in the corrected version, or they were both released at the same time.

The publisher wasn't aware of the error until readers started calling. They quickly made an announcement to bookstores to pull the error edition for replacement. For those of us that did call, we could send our error copy direct to publisher (I didn't of course) for replacement as well, and they gave us a link to a PDF of corrected chapter.

Again, they didn't know this happened. I think the first print number with errors is large, but I also know a ton of them was sent back and destroyed.

No, they didn't correct the number line. We have two edition in the market. One with error and number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 and one with corrections with number line
10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. So, this is why I call my error copies "Early State" first edition.

Am I wrong?

I was under the impression (sorry my memory is not what it used to be) the "2" states were printed at the same time, but at different presses? When I went to return my mis-printed edition, I found the local B&N to have about 50/50 mix of the book. This was the week of release.

Scored a signed The Twelve arc early in the eBay offerings, reading now after a re-read of The Passage.

Never bought into the F-Upped Edition collecting.
No different IMHO than a dented edition. (Start up the flame throwers!)

It doesn't really matter to me because I want all the states anyway.

I hope to have a THE TWELVE proof one day too Karl. I'm glad you found one. I'd never read a proof of a book I'm going to buy the trade edition of, but that's because I'm so far behind in my reading all the time. However, I do plan on reading most of the ARCs CD sent me through the reading clubs.

As mentioned, both states (of the 1st edtion, 1st printing) were released at the same time. The error was a result of more than one printer being used.
I think it's funny how at the time it was just one of those things you deal with, and now (that the second of the trilogy) is due out, collector's go apoplectic about it (not having one of each).
Oh, just to throw a monkey wrench into it, Cronin pre-signed pages that were tipped in books-most of which were put on display in advance of his appearance at a reading, and stickered as "signed". He then signed books after the reading.
Therefore the following states of the trade US 1St Edition 1St printing exist (perhaps more):


1st, 1st with errors.
1st 1st without noted errors.
1st 1st with pre-signed tipped in signature sheet-and a sticker on front denoting signed by author-with errors.
1st 1st with pre-signed tipped in signature sheet-and a sticker on front denoting signed by author-without errors.
1st 1st with pre-signed tipped in signature sheet-and a sticker on front denoting signed by author-with errors, and additionally signed/dated by Cronin.
1st 1st with pre-signed tipped in signature sheet-and a sticker on front denoting signed by author-without errors and additionally signed/dated by Cronin.

Etc. Etc.

The errors themselves are almost irrelevant-to Collectors. A publishers nightmare, but just an errata for readers.
Who knows, but I doubt in 25 years that any of the versions will be worth (sell for) much. Too many people know, and too many have versions to make it more than just interesting.
I damn near;-actually I did, give copies away back in July 2010.

I don't 'collect' Cronin to the extent that I look for signed editions and ARCs but in this case I would love to get my hands on one, just so I can read it during my upcoming holiday....

Calm down. I trust our members to not reveal anything significant-and most reviews-books, movies don't just say "The Crying Game"-she's a guy. The book is the second of a well planned out trilogy-marketing plan, there won't be many spoliers even when you read the entire book.

Just saw that Michaël started this thread last week, good call! Already got some good info out of it, had no idea whatsoever about the error edition. Went and checked mine, which I bought at Aviano Air Base in Italy on July 26, 2010 ... no error and a later printing, number line 2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3.

I hadn't heard of Cronin until CD announced their S/L editions in 2010; I managed to grab a lettered of The Passage (and of course am still waiting patiently for it). I was one of the initial orders on May 24, before they doubled the run from 26 to 52, so will be getting a single letter (provided Mindy reads the "notes" section of my order before sending it out!). Am also having that one remarqued by Jill Baumann, worked that out two years ago as well.

Ordered matching lettered The Twelve when it was announced, and picked up the ARC on eBay two weeks ago (it was a BIN so I didn't steal it from anybody ... technically). Have been meaning to pick up an ARC of The Passage, just haven't got around to it yet. Don't have any of the other editions, though will probably get around to it with time. Has anyone generated a master list of everything so far (all trades (US, UK, signed, not signed), US & UK signed/limiteds, ARCs/proofs, etc.)? I see that RF got a good start on the list of trades. Was a UK ARC/Proof ever done?

I thought the story itself was okay, not great, too much like I Am Legend and any other number of stories. Matter of fact, when I saw the Will Smith "I Am Legend" movie, it was pretty much exactly how I expected The Passage movie would be if it was ever made. Maybe we'll see someday; can always hope. Just did a quick Google search on status of the movie, looks like last news was early 2011.

I like this review-covered proof, hadn't seen it before (only the one with the artwork). Looks to be in beautiful shape too. Any official word on numbers printed? I took at look at your UK one as well ... I've liked that cover art better than the US edition from the start, really draws your attention to her eye. Went and checked eBay for giggles, there's one UK proof up with a BIN of $235; way too pricy for my wallet!

I do not know how many of each proof were printed, but I'd like to know. I saw the UK ARC on Abebooks for something like $125 or maybe a little less, contacted my UK book dealer about it and was informed he couldn't find any at all so he recommended I buy the one on Abes, which I did.

And yes, that review proof is in very fine condition, I am very happy with it.

Very nice! If no one else has commited to it, I'll buy it if you're selling.

Also received yet another paperback edition today. Ballantine, international edition printed in 2011, ISBN 978-0-345-52522-2, with a different cover layout then the 'normal' US paperback. I took a chance on Ebay from a UK seller and naturally the book was sent in a flimsy mailer with no protection, and is also a 4th printing. But at least I know what it looks like. I am looking for a '1st' of this edition if anyone comes across one.

I would love to discuss the book when more people have read it. But for now i really enjoyed it, not quite as much as 'The Passage' though. It's full of suprises, twists and turns and seems to tie most things up before the end of the story.

I was really impressed with The Passage...I had flipped through it for awhile and was sort of meh, but I changed my tune once I got and read it. Excited to get an early look!

I was really impressed with The Passage...I had flipped through it for awhile and was sort of meh, but I changed my tune once I got and read it. Excited to get an early look!

Wow, how do you do that? I'm nearly finished with The Passage and totally love it. Not having to wait for the release of The Twelve would be awesome.

I don't believe the video is an official US promo. Looks like it may be from Waterstones. The scene with the two children is a nice a approximation from the book, without giving anything significant away.

Sure hope it's going to be a signing; I'm thinking it'll have to be either the US or UK The Twelve ARC. I personally spoke to a person at the San Francisco Books Inc. and he verified Cronin is scheduled 11/7/2012. The Kepler's location is being remodeled and they aren't open, but the outbound message says to keep checking their calendar for events.

Well retailers often get them a week or two early but they usually have to sign an affidavit that they won't sell before the official release date, so who knows. I would think you're right, publisher acquired somehow.

I'd keep an eye on Powell's. They do lots of signed books and pre-orders but it varies by author what they will do in conjunction with the venues for the tour etc. Some authors will sign for the bookstores who take orders and other authors only sign during the signings for fans etc, and those cannot be purchased online or pre-ordered etc.

If anyone could find out from any of the book store tour stops, that would help.

I would check the Phlash bus loop. They probably go from somewhere near the station to the Library. It is a hop on, hop off type of bus. I've walked through the library area before. Felt pretty safe.

According to the Waterstone's sampler for The Twelve, they will have an exclusive edition of The Twelve with an extra chapter. I don't see it on the website marked as a special edition. Can someone in the UK see if the edition offered on their website is the exclusive version?

I'll be going to the Houston event, which sounds interesting. He'll be at two nearby bookstores -- sort of a block party -- and then signing at a bar in the neighborhood. You have to get a signing ticket at one of the bookstores to get a book signed at the pub.

For anybody looking at going to the Denver signing, here's the info:


Cronin will be in LoDo for a reading and signing on Saturday, November
3rd at 7:30pm. Free tickets to those in line at 6:30pm; to give everyone a fair chance, we do not hand out tickets in advance. The events space holds 200+, though, so rarely is anyone disappointed. Signing a galley will be up to Cronin (some authors do and some do not...).

I also wrote to Cronin, he said no problem with signing an ARC, but that sometimes the bookstores didn't like it. So, between the two I'll be able to get an ARC signed.

Just got back from signing at Riverun Bookstore in Portsmouth NH. what a great time. I really love that town. He gave brief reading and then did a Q and A for 1/2 hour. Then just hung around and signed books while chatting to everyone. Got a whole bunch of Books signed. some proofs and 1st editions. Very cool time:)
I dont want to spoil anything so i will wait to chat about it until everyone gets to a signing.
