This vocab game is very addictive. I have come to think of it as the Free Oriza game...

It is an entertaining exercise.

I think I got to level 48.

The one reservation I have is that a lot of the definitions are not really synonymous with the words given.

Since when is a bodega known as a "wine-house?"

There were other definitions that were really off, but that's the one that sticks out.

Since about 1848:
Online Etymology Dictionary
bodega

1848, from Mex.Sp., from Sp., "a wine shop," from L., from Gk. apotheke "depot, store"

Wordnet
bodega

noun
a small Hispanic shop selling wine and groceries

Dictionary.com:
1. (esp. among Spanish-speaking Americans) a grocery store.
2. a wineshop.
3. a warehouse for storing or aging wine.

And so on and so forth.

My fault.

There are other (valid) examples though.

I didn't have a problem with the agriculture-related nouns-since it is a food program-but some of the other definitions seemed a bit stretched, IMO.

I'll have to go back and take it again so I can cite specific examples.

I guess I have a problem with the notion that every term has a one-word synonym, which is the underlying basis of the game.

Picky.

Yeah, there were some weird ones, but overall it was pretty fun. :D

Nevermind dear Jean. The most important part is the hit ton of rice. :D

I think the most abstruse terms related to agriculture or chemical compounds that formed different foods. I'm pretty sure most people here missed them, unless they work for the USDA or Archer Daniels-Midland.

If you go into the "options" tab at the site it will record your stats, at least as far as how much oriza you have scored and the highest level you have achieved.

Only if you have an aversion to expanding your vocabulary and feeding hungry people.

Why can't they just give them the rice without making other people jump through meaningless hoops?

Thought this deserved a bump.

As far as I know, people are still hungry and vocabularies still need expansion.

Do you think these people really provide rice to third world countries?

Well, my vocabulary is fairly large anyhow, so I have a question: If later on in life I find I don't like the people that were helped by this if I'm willing to go back and give the wrong answers will they take the rice back from them for me? :orely:

Nope, you'll have to get it yourself. :shoot:

Yes, I think they do. They're partnered with the UN and Harvard University. Seems fairly reputable to me.

Well...damn it! :(

They could at least give me some background information on the people so I can make an educated decision as to whether they deserve my words/their rice. <_<

That's it!

I'm sending the people who run that web site the following email.

Dear sir or madam,

I was wondering if instead of sending the rice to those people if you could send it to me when I spell a word right. I am hungry. I haven't eaten since breaksfast and it's 10:45AM now, so please send it quickly. I'll thank you in advance for my lunch. :)
