I love lists, especially lists about movies. I was just thinking that I've never really seen a list of the best movie franchises'.

I would like to see some of your lists. What do you think is the best movie franchise of all time? Giving some reasons why could be fun as well.

Now, I hate to start a topic about a list and not be the first to leave one, but I just thought of this topic, so sue me. :nope:

I take lists veryseriously, without them I fear our society would crumble. That being said, I would like to sleep on it and post my list tomorrow. I'm sure you will all be waiting anxiously by your computers.

I'm considering a movie franchise as anything with at least 3 films and Home Alone doesn't count because the third one was a piece of shit. You can't have Home Alone without the main characters.

Also, as much as I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I consider them one movie.

I love the Shrek movies and the Harry Potter films. Although the Harry Potter books are a hundred million times better, the movies still are fun and entertaining to me.

1. Back to the Future

2. The Decalogue

3. American Pie

4. LOTR

5. Trois couleurs

6. Beverly Hills Cop

I don't think you'd films directed by Jafar Panahi as a "franchise"-particularly since they involve completely different characters and actors-but I'd throw his work into the mix as well.

Persian cinema is second to none!

Oh man, how could I forget The Godfather?!

:panic:

Or Austin Powers, for that matter.

People who liked the films should really read Mario Puzo's novel. It's brilliant.

Harry Potter is the new juggernaut.

And I'll forgive the spelling error/extraneous apostrophe in the thread title for now.

I'm just wondering how Mattrick could count Nightmare On Elm Street as one of the best while slamming Friday The 13'th and Scream. . They were all classic first films followed by hollow shells of sequels.

I didn't like the first Friday the 13th or any of them, though Jason X was hilariously bad. While the first Scream is above average the rest are horrible. Nightmare on Elm Street, however, had a great beginning and a great end with Wes Craven's New Nightmare. I loved all the Freddy movies when I was younger and I would get laughs out of the sequels it's hard to deny the popularity of the series after all this time and I think Freddy is more Iconic than Jason or Myers. The only reason they even made Freddy vs. Jason was because Freddy is so entertaining so matter if he's comical or horrifying.

And as for Halloween, while all the films following the original weren't as good not only has it last thirty years in popularity but is the only hollywood iconic slasher to be remade which was well recieved (not sure why) and, unlike the other series, outweighs in wide theatrical releases if I'm not mistaken.

Scream is probably Wes Craven's worst works, ever.

Before anyone says 'but harry potter is great' I don't like it and it's monetary values are not enough for me to say it's a great franchise...I can't wait until all the movies are out and I don' thave to hear about it any more.

Okay, I've slept on it and I think I have all my favs, but I might be forgetting a few:

1-The Godfather - It's such a no brainer I almost forgot to put it on the list. These films defined a whole genre. People give the 3rd one shit, but it's still very good.

2-Indiana Jones - Just classic. I know some people aren't fond of the 3rd one, but I really like it. I'm very much looking forward to the 4th one. Especially since I got to see them film some of it in New Haven, Connecticut.

3-Die Hard - Great action movies. Great character. The 4th one was a little over the top. John McClane is supposed to be the every man who gets beat up, not flying cars into helicopters.

4 - Back to the Future - I love the first 2 films so much. The 3rd was a let down, but still entertaining.

5 - Rocky - The first film is a great. 2,3,4 are all solid. The 5th is a mess, but I actually liked the most recent.

6 - Terminator - Some of the most quoted action movies of all time.

7 - Star Wars - I was not breed on these films like most, which is why it's not higher.

8 - Rush Hour - My favorite buddy comedy franchise. The 3rd was kind of bad but the first 2 are amazingly funny films.

9 - Bourne - This one is quickly rising up my list. By next year it could be in the top 5. Three solid films. Matt Damon is a badass.

10 - Rambo - Pure action. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

11 - Bond - I haven't seen every Bond film, so I can't put it much higher.

12 - Mad Max - One of the newer franchises I just started watching. Mad Max and Road Warrior are classics, thunderdome--not so much. One of the more underrated franchises I think.

13 - Lethal Weapon - Mel Gibson at his beat.

14 - National Lampoons Vacation - I just love these movies. I decided to put it on my list because I wanted a pure comedy franchise.

Close but no cigar.

Matrix - I love the first film, but the sequels were kind of weak. I was very disappointed.

Pirates of the Caribean - Read above. This is what happens when Hollywood just wants to cash in on a franchise.

El Mariachi - Very fun movies. Desparado is a great action movie. It just doesn't fit my standards for a franchise.

Man With No Name- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is one of the best westerns of all time. I also love the other 2 flims, but I'm not considering them a franchise.

Oceans - 11 is the most fun heist film ever made. 12 sucked...bad. 13 was a nice comeback, but not good enough to put on my top list.

Maybe next year

Alien - The thread in this forum will inspire me to finally watch this franchise.

Jaws - I've never seen the first one from start to finish. It's on my to watch list.

I'm sure my list is very different that most, but that's the beauty of lists. Shit, Zone didn't want me to say that word anymore.

Yeah, I'm not really sure why I did that. I'm usually pretty good with that. Maybe it's my apostrophe fetish.

You said you'll forgive it for now, let me know when you stop forgiving it. I want to be ready.

My post above was a lot longer than I expected. It was fun to put together though.

Aren't they supposed to be at least three movies to be considered a franchise?

In a case like Predator (two movies) which has had a spin off serie (AVP - 2 movies) I think it counts. Also puts Alien to six.

Not sure how I forgot Bond (or anyone else) as it's only the biggest and longest running film franchise of all time. I don't recall liking many of the old ones (Man With The Golden Gun was the worst) but Golden Eye, Die Another Day and Casino Royale were awesome.

Mattrick, you need to see El Mariachi.

It is the best low-budget action film I've ever seen, and definitely stands up with the rest of the trilogy.

I loved Pierce Brosnan as Bond. I was sad to see that he wasn't anymore but the the new guy definetly shows promise.

And Mattrick I agree with Ruthful. El Mariachi kicks ass. The other two movies will make a lot more sense after you watch it.

Pierce Brosnan is way too feminine to be James Bond. Sean Connery!!!!!!!

Mattrick

El Mariachi was made with a budget of like 8,000 or something, wasn't it? I know it was ridiculously low anyways.

No, Roger Moore was way to feminine to be James Bond and Dalton was practically a metrosexual. Bronson played Bond as a suave yet gave him an edge but more subtle than Craig. While the rest of Brosnons Bond movies were not as good as his first, Goldeneye is among the premiere bond movies. And revitalized the faltering franchise, breathing new life into it imo.

While Moore did suck big time, I do have to give him credit for getting me into the franchise as a kid in the early '80's. It was actually my mom who broke it to me that he sucked and then made me watch some of Connery's ones. And I'm still thankful to her for it.

Alien Triology (no reserection) had all quality directors. All three were young in there careers and Cameron with Terminator had the only real hit before making an Alien movie. I don't think there is another franchise, with various directors, that can live up to this. 3 oscars for cameron (probably other nomes) 3 noms for Scott and while Fincher hasn't been in the oscars yet his fanbase is vast.

I bought El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in the West at Wal-Mart. They were in a set that cost like $12.50. Pretty good deal.

It's a really good movie and a great teaching tool on how to make really good low budget films.

See, I'm totally the other way round - I like the old ones, but not the new ones. Live And Let Die is probably my favourite.

Not strictly a trilogy, but I'd like to put forward the two Corey's as a franchise in themselves - so that'd be Lost Boys, Dream A Little Dream and License To Drive. They have to be appreciated for the awesome 80's teen cheese that they are

Can we also include the John Hughes films as a franchise?
