Some of you may recall that Stephen King had a short beginning of a story in a blog for kids called The Weekly Writer back in 2005. This could be very old news, but I just discovered that that beginning section was continued piece by piece by 28 kids, and so here's the complete short story, with King's beginning being:

Tommy's job was to get wood for the fire from the box at the bottom of the cellar stairs. His mother said he wouldn't be afraid of the cellar when he got older, but now he was ten, and he hated it more than ever.

Tommy was sure something was behind the furnace. He sometimes thought he could hear it breathing back there, and he knew it was watching him. Then one day when Tommy was getting the wood, the door at the top of the stairs swung shut and the cellar light went out.

King's section was published twice in 2005: in Writing for Teens and KnowYourWorld Extra (where it was untitled, so this might have been its first publication as King didn't choose the title The Furnace).
