From Talk Stephen King :

Jule Bosman has a short article at Media Decoder about some new attempts Esquire is making to not only include more fiction -- but to market it to men.

While a lot of the focus in fiction is in the e-book world, the article also reveals that King and Hill will be published in the June / July issue of Esquire.

Bosman writes:

It coincides with the publication of three works in the June/July issue of Esquire — by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill; the thriller writer Lee Child; and Colum McCann. The works will be available only in the print and iPad editions of the magazine.

David Granger, the editor in chief of Esquire, said he has lamented the loss of space that magazines devoted to publishing fiction. The New Yorker is perhaps the most visible home for fiction in the magazine world, but many other magazines have cut back.

The full article is HERE.

Any idea when this issue hits the stands?

The first volume of the series includes new short stories by Aaron Gwyn, Luis Alberto Urrea and Jess Walter, and the stories will be sold only in e-book format in collaboration with Open Road Integrated Media, a digital publisher, beginning June 12. (Another volume will follow every few months.)

It coincides with the publication of three works in the June/July issue of Esquire — by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill; the thriller writer Lee Child; and Colum McCann. The works will be available only in the print and iPad editions of the magazine.

This sounds like 6/12 is the date for both of these.

I wonder if this and Throttle and some other unpublished material could pave way for a King/Hill collection? It would make sense; otherwise both authors would have to collected these stories in their own collections, which sounds like a dubious enterprise. I would love a dedicated King/Hill collection of collaborations. I'm sure these two are not the only things they've done.

Brice
05-21-2012, 08:52 AM
If they are, they certainly seem to like it so we can probably expect more. I too would love a king/hill collection.

When to look for it on the stands?

Bev Vincent
05-22-2012, 05:56 AM
I'd expect it soon -- the May issue was out in mid-April.

From SKMB: Esquire has announced it is to publish a new story collaboration by Joe Hill and Stephen as part of its launch of an e-book series called "Fiction for Men." "In the Tall Grass" will be published in two parts, the first to appear in the June/July issue and the conclusion in the August issue. The works will be available only in the print and iPad editions of the magazine.

The son of Stephen and Tabitha King has a really balanced head on his shoulders-which is why it hasn't fallen off! He's a Bangor boy and we had some commonality in having grown up there and had parents with similar philosophies to raising children. I hope you like this story and try one of his books such as "Heart Shaped Box" or "Horns." I read "Horns" and thought it was a fun read.

He had already separated the signed copies (he actually had multiple) from the standard ones and was doing it on a straight-up first-come-first-served basis. congrats to all that got a signed copy!

I tried pretty hard today to get one but only could finagle unsigned.

I "ordered" a signed copy from a Virginia book store yesterday only to receive an email saying they were not allowed to sell them yet and to wait untill noon the next day to see if I would get one.

Then i went down to not one but TWO local stores. At the first one i got there a full hour before opening, spied one on the table inside and was the first guy in the door and purchased what they told me was their last (unsigned) Not sure where the the other ones got too or if they had any signed ones. It definitely seemed like this location had already sold some.

The second shop I went to was a local vintage CD and vinyl (that has a small book section) store that opened an hour later. The stores were geographically close, so I was able to get from one to the other quickly. First in line at both spots. After the record store opened, the girl working there had no clue what IBD was and told me they didnt have any of that. I went to the shops FB page and showed her the post that said they did and would be selling them and she went to the back and found me one.

Then, after I returned home I received an email from the shop i had ordered from the day before at 12:05 saying that they HAD a signed copy in stock to fill my order! I was sitting at the computer when the email came in and emailed the girl back basically freaking out saying i'm blown away thank you so much for making my day! only to receive ANOTHER email from the shop at 12:31 saying i'm sorry we made a mistake we only had unsigned left!

Talk about a roller coaster!

I went into today knowing to was going to be hard to score a signed copy and even when I had gotten an email saying the shop had one for me i told myself, dont get excited until it is in hand!

I ended up first in line at 2 shops and still couldn't pull one out of the hat.

I think it is just too hard to score one of these exclusives. Every shop does something different and i'm sure folks know the value of a Stephen King signature.

I had fun out searching for the white whale, the winning lottery ticket but ended up not getting a Sig.

I had fun out searching for the white whale, the winning lottery ticket but ended up not getting a Sig.

That WAS a roller coaster. I'm sorry it didn't turn out better for you. :(

I HATE when they do this kind of thing and I can't get a copy.
I LOVE when they do this kind of thing and I can get a copy.
So far, HATE is winning.
If I had money to burn, it wouldn't be so bad, so what, just throw a couple hundred or a thousand bucks at someone for the signed edition. But I'm just not in a financial position to do that all the time.
However, I must admit I have a lot of nice stuff, so I shouldn't complain, but sometimes I LOVE to complain, and sometimes I HATE to complain.
It's kind of a LOVE/HATE relationship!
Don't you just HATE that?

Or don't you just LOVE that?

congrats to all that got a signed copy!

I had fun out searching for the white whale, the winning lottery ticket but ended up not getting a Sig.

Next time try The Family Book Shop in Deland, the best bookstore in central Florida they were participating and had plenty!

You got a signed copy there?

I didn't do the whole central FL circuit. Just hit the two stores in winter Park. I just figured I had a shot at a signed copy because i was hitting two stores, LOL

The employees at Park Ave. CDs didnt even know about Independent Bookstore Day  I had to show them their own ad on facebook to get the girl to go get me a unsigned copy out of the back.

We should start a thread on Library Thing and complain about the selling practices and gimmicks of Indie Bookstore Day!

What if any consensus is there as to the number of copies signed by King/Hill?

@bookstoreday tweeted that there were fewer than 300 bookplates signed. And 60 stores ordered the bookplates. I was told by one book store that the books sold out in under 8 minutes.

I keep hearing 300.

I would say many more tried to order the bookplates - but it was like a King limited sale - if you were too slow - you missed out. I spoke with several stores that said you needed to send your request in at 1201...they got there's in by 1202 - and the signed copies were gone. That was from at least 3 stores which I spoke with. So many tried, only a few succeeded - and it seemed that shops had anywhere from 2-5 signed copies - since I know of several that only had 2 copies.

I don’t understand the prices we are seeing for the S/L of In the Tall Grass. There are UK signed Limited editions of similar limitation, and better quality, also signed on a book plate, which go for half of this.

This seems like a $300-400 book, at most. What am I missing?

(Not that I have any skin in the game – I neither have one, nor want one, as I collect UK editions primarily. I’m just very concerned that the hype of the moment is costing people a lot of money, and so few are questioning the wisdom of these sales)

You aren’t missing anything. People are gouging for as much as they can for anything king right now.

I have a copy I would sell to a member here for $750. FULL DISCLOSURE. I am in Canada and paid a LOT more than $12.99 for it. I traded about $750 in gift editions.....

Wow. Wow. Wow. Just recieved my copy from Gibson's Bookstore, NH and it IS signed! Never thought I would be able to get one by online ordering. Happy Camper.

Also, have a couple of extra of the non-signed from my binge buying if anyone is looking for a copy.
