Becca, is the Game of Thrones ARC the unpublished state for the true 1st edition, or is it for another version? It looks cool (I have a soft spot for proofs and ARCs).

becca69
05-18-2012, 05:37 AM
As far as I know it is. It's an uncorrected proof for the 1st 1996 US hardcover edition. The artwork was completely changed obviously. I've seen quite a few missing the dust jacket. The only other I know of is the UK proof that I think has a red cover. I'm not sure they did proofs for reissued states - at least I haven't seen any.

Here is a link that lists all the editions w/ pics through Feast. The prices are quite a bit out of date though as the blog was written in 2006.

I've read the first two books in the Ice and Fire series, and I am loving it! The problem is that now I want signed first editions.

sgc1999
05-19-2012, 04:53 PM
They keep going up in price! Im thinking as long as HBO keeps running with it, that will continue. You can still get Feast of crows and Dance with dragons pretty cheap but the rest are getting pricey.

This story is fantastic. The amount of characters is staggering and they are developed so well. I would put this on par with my favorite epic fantasy adventure, Lord of the rings. very captivating!

Brice
05-19-2012, 05:33 PM
I think I'll pick up a cheap paperback payday and check it out. I'm really not big on like hardcore fantasy though which is sorta what I'm understanding it to be. Tolkien is about the only real fantasy I like. I'll give it a try though. I have heard LOTS of good things about it.

Patrick
05-19-2012, 05:39 PM
Hey Brice, I'm with you. I just started reading the series the past couple months for the first time because of listening to everyone saying how good it is over the past few years. It's worth checking out.

Brice
05-19-2012, 05:54 PM
I will pick it up Thursday. I figure about $5 for a paperback isn't too much. If it's not my thing; I can just pass it on to someone else. If I love it I can just talk to our friend above about selling one of those first editions. It's not like he'd notice having one less.

Brice, I'm doing the same right now, I'm giving the books a try and although I only finished like 60 pages of the first book so far, I really, really enjoy it. I don't read too much fantasy either but this has a very different feel to it than I expected.

Brice
05-20-2012, 09:39 AM

I keep meaning to give this series a try.

seriously, I cant imagine your being dissapointed. Give the series a try. Dont give up at the end of Game of thrones it just keeps getting better. That would be like judging Dartower by just gunslinger. This is not to imply GOT is not good, because it is great! just hang on for the full ride. You will look back after finishing book five and i think you will agree you had just as much fun as your first time reading LOTR. I know i did, and i was a hard critic, as LOTR has been a favorite of mine since i was 12yrs old. Doit, you will be glad you did. :)

Brice
05-21-2012, 07:17 AM
I DID judge DT by The Gunslinger. Luckily I adored that book from the start. Same with Tolkien. I wouldn't have tried LOTR if I hadn't loved The Hobbit. I can't read a book if I don't like it, but I will seriously try it. Just being truthful, but if the story doesn't have a hold on me by the second book there is little chance of me reading beyond that.

WeDealInLead

I'm still on the fence about the series. I saw a couple of episodes and didn't really think much of it.

I have some books I'll post pictures of later.

You can not judge a book by a television series. Seriously they are not even close. There are major characters not even included in the tv show. George r r martin did not write the screen play and they are 2 completely different animals.

they are not in the same book, perhaps not even in the same library:)

Brice

Brice, I judged the series on the first book, A GAME OF THRONES. I loved it and couldn't wait to read the second book, so I went straight into it. Now I'm forcing myself to space these out and read a couple other things on my list in between, but I can't wait to dive into the third book.

What's the deal with those silver foil ARCs? I've never seen those before. Is it just the updated dust jacket?

sorry just saw this post. Im still in CA great show and got one fast King sig, but the absolute hightlight was getting my picture with George Martin at the ALA show and getting a few things signed that i will post when i get home. Awesome guy!
The foil djs are supposed to come with this arc. they are worth a lot more with the dj but still pricey evn without. Ill post pics of the books underneath when i get home too if i can remember. LOL :)

Sounds like a lot of fun. What book did King sign?

I wish GRRM was on the East Coast more often (actually if he would just sit still and write, I'd be happy). I found out he was in NYC on vacation a few days before I was up there myself. I just missed him but was able to pick up a few signed books from the book stores he happened to stopped in. Can't wait to see your pics and don't forget to post those ARCs!

I had King signe a nice copy of Onan. He signed it in black sharpie though so that wasnt to cool:/
GRRM signed a rare arc that i had, a teaser chapter of game of thrones tiny book, and my homeade "Tyrion Lannister for president shirt:)" Ill post pics sunday or monday.
Had a blast. I agree with you on the east coast visit. Seems like he is never near new england unless you count new york which is still a 4 hour drive for me.

Ya,
i bumped into him at the Tor book stand 30 minutes before he was going upstairs to give his speech. I was holding my gear and walking around down stairs killing time, holding stuff i was hopeing he would sign upstairs after his speech, if i could get his attention, and wearing the shirt i got signed. My Jaw dropped when i saw him and no one even recognised him, he was sitting with a "handler", you know, the woman who plays bad cop for the author:) anyway i looked at him, mouth agape, and said, "unbelievable, the man". i asked if he would sign my gear after dribbling about how much i loved the ice and fire series, at which point "the handler" says "he's not here for those books, he is here for TOR books!!! and gives me the stink eye. But George being the awesome dude that he is says "sneak it over here and ill sign it. "handler" gives a huff and turns her head at which time i got my gear signed and got a pic with him wearing my "Tyrion for president" shirt:) good times!!!
got two more items signed after his speech too.
Didnt make the ALA King show but this made up for it! plus i got to see him with you guys friday night anyway:)

Cool Simon. So which ARC came first... the one I have with the different dust jacket or yours with the foil? Do you know the story on the different versions? I would think the silver foil dj had to come after if that's what they used for the trade edition, although it states uncorrected page proofs and mine says advanced readers copy. I'm so confused!!

I blame each and everyone of you and your fantastic collections, and maybe HBO and HPB, for giving me the Ice and Fire collecting bug. So, I need some info. I am trying to start out with the Harper Voyager t UK slipcased "trade". And I was fine til Feast of Crows. What is the difference in the signed blue and red slipcased ones and if you were going to pick up one, which would you get first? Thanks.

The red slipcased crows is the only one like it. compareable to Dark tower it would be like that Rogue Uk s/l of wizard and glass but not as cool:) I would stick to the blue set if your heart is set on getting those first, otherwise i would try to get the US 1st edition 1st printing by Bantom, and work your way toward game. I would rather have a 1st/1st by bantom or the Uk of Game than the entire 5 book set by Voyager. My opinion. I do know the 1st/1st of game is flying up in value rapidly.

The blue slipcased editions from Voyager are not signed. I hope Voyager decides to eventually do the final two books in the same format, otherwise the first five will look very out of place on your shelf. I have the first one, but I'm not thrilled with it, so I didn't get the others.

I agree with Simon - start with the 1/1 editions of the UK releases and then if you really want to keep going, go for the 1/1 UK editions. Other than the red Feast for Crows, you will be hard-pressed to find single signed/limited editions of the Meisha Merlin or Sub Press books for sale

Thanks for the answers.
Eric, there really is a signed blue slipcase - no sigil (spelling?)on it. Here's the link to amazon.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Feast-For-Crows-Book-Four/dp/000722463X/ref=tmm_hrd_title_5
(Oh, a little off topic - I've noticed hyprlinks don't show up a different color or underlined so sometimes it's difficult to know there is something to click on, or maybe it's just my display?)

sgc1999, I actually did find a US 1/1 at the local used bookstore for 10.99. That is what really got me going. I did get the Dance with Dragons, but need the other US and all the UK trades. After I saw the HBO previews I got the PBs and loved the series. I think I may start with the red one since you say it's the odd one.

I'm heading out of town, will think aout it driving and let you know which one I decide to get..

Hey buddy. I wouldn't have a problem sending you one..except that you would have to be ok with the international shipping charges. If so...a copy is yours for $62.50 + international shipping. Let me know. I only have 2 available copies left. I can get you an approximate shipping cost if you'd like.

From Sept. 11:

"A ton of folks have been waiting for George R. R. Martin's A Dance with Dragons. We're happy to let you know that the books themselves are now done, and that we've sent copies out to have the slipcases for the limited and lettered editions made. If our supplier holds true to form, those should be done in another 6-8 weeks, at which time we'll start shipping."
