View Full Version : The Gunslinger Metal cases

Randall Flagg

I was given a prototype metal case for The Gunslinger. The case is unique in several ways:

It is made out of aluminum and then anodized black. It can be anodized in an assortment of colors.
The case feels like gunmetal. It also is "substantial". It weighs 3lbs. 10 ounces!
The case has a notched rail inside allowing the case to be slid open to show the book.
The artwork is a test, and it could also be "flipped" and put on the other side.
The potential is that cases could be ordered with a limitation number or letter that matches a person's S/L The Gunslinger-most anything can be either engraved or anodized onto the metal.
The inside is very smooth, not a single exposed surface or edge that a book would catch on.

Is there interest in this amongst collectors?

I'd be interested, but wouldn't be surprised if it's out of my league moneywise. it is a beautiful case though.

Very nice but ultimately its just a case and not nearly as important as the book it holds

See, I agree not as important as the book it holds, but look at the book it's for. It deserves an exceptional case. Kinda like it doesn't matter if you have cheap kit bookcases or fancy barrister bookcases or some such thing (at least in the short term), but of course most book collectors are going to want the nicest bookcases (and nicest cases in general) that they can afford. It's about the best protection and presentation. I guess it's a matter of aesthetics though. This to me is one of the nicest slipcases that I've seen.

I'd be interested to know who is producing them, we're always looking for cool case makers for the really high end projects.

I would not be interested. If and when I get a Gunslinger S/L I would keep it in the original slipcase.

I would be interested. I think theyare very unique and would love to have one. However the cost will determine if I actually order one. It is just a case and I will only spend so much on a case !

LostAlivE

I would like to get one depending upon the cost.
I would want to put my second edition of The Gunslinger in it. I don't think I would keep my S/L (if I had one) in it.
After seeing the other pictures of the slipcase I think it is very beautiful and would very much like to have one.

I agree that this would be a nice case for either the Grant 1st or 2nd but not the S/L. Interested.

I'm on the fence, but slowly tipping to the "But" side. The more I think about it.....

Price is of course a factor. Are we looking at $300 or better? BTW I really like the art especially the potential "back side" image.

Glad you don't want one.
Perhaps I didn't convey that these are test mules. The beauty of the design is that (If we choose), the art on the front and back will be ala Carte, the buyer chooses from art we have available, OR within the design parameters submits their own art.
Since there are only 2 cases done, as I mentioned these are tests, and the one member who helped submitted the drawings.
I am getting pissy now, but I challenge you to provide your own original art that doesn't "look like a shop sketch".

You should make two versions...one that is big enough to hold a Grant 1st/2nd/3rd printing, and anohter size that holds the S/L and slipcase that came with the book.

There are 4 cases left. We will likely do no more, and if we do, they won't be garage "sketch art".
1 case is green, the other 3 are black. The first 4 people to PM me and pay $269 + Shipping get them. The first "green Case" PM gets the Green case.
Here is your chance to have a 1/~6 case.
After these 4 cases are gone, this thread will be archived.

A thread that asks for people's opinions to gauge interest in a slipcase, and then throws abuse at people who comment they don't like the art. Interesting.

I think the case is awesome, especially how it slides open. I'd be interested but expect the price to be outside what I'd be prepared to pay for a case though.

**edit** I missed the post with the price. I think that is quite reasonable actually. Still outside my budget, but probably a good deal for the lucky purchasers.

I like the cases a lot, especially for the $269 price tag. I didn't really consider putting a Gunslinger first edition in it until it was brought up. That's not a bad idea. My worry at that point would be that it stands out (and I guess that's kinda the point, lol) from the rest of my first editions. Just like the Dolso cases, they stand out and you can display them, but, if you're like me who only wants to have ONE representation of a particular first edition, it leaves a hole in your first edition section.

Oh, and Bill ... octopus!

Time to switch to decaf.

Last I checked this was a discussion thread...so that's what I was doing...discussing.

And you are correct..no one asked me to pony up the money.....which is why is said "if".

For the record....the drawing is significantly better than what I could produce.

Jesus. Why are you offended by someone else's opinion?

Personally I love the case itself. I do think the gun art/sketch could use a little work. The case is so smooth and finished; the font used is also streamlined; so the gun itself seems a little off and out of place.

You should be.
If it all works out as it should, there will be a case auctioned off benefiting the Fundraiser. The previous few older/original art cases are still out there (in fact I own one). Not everyone loved the art, but the cases themselves were/are a marvel.

Gorgeous with that Ned Dameron etching. Is this the new one that you teased somewhere a few months back? Is that drawing in an upcoming auction, or did I miss seeing it come around? Is it in a book, or is it a separate piece of art?

The one pictured is the new art done by Ned Dameron. It is etched on a dark green machined aluminum case. It is an auction item and should go up for sale within a week.
We also have the original piece thta Ned did on a white board. That piece measures ~16"x10" and it will also be auctioned.

I'm not certain, but I believe it was laser engraved.
Quite a bit of time as the case starts out black (or deep green). Everything that is white in the image (far more than 50%) is "lasered" out.
Forgive me for my naivete, but that's the way I understand it.

BTW,
One case is for auction. At this time, there are no additional cases available. That could change. That would only happen if the person who handled the manufacturing end of things has a spare. I was told that 2 cases were damaged during production.

You can take the actual color up with someone else. Capish? Please, leave me be as I have done for you, Cool? Or are we all at war these days?

I'm still confused Merlin, the posting from Jerome even says its green.. Yes, No?

Hard to tell in this photo, but the case is a very deep green. The only one in that color:

I have some inquiry's about the gunslinger cases, so this is where I'm at....
This year I finished the long process of finishing a project from a few years ago that was shelved for various reasons, mostly lack of art.
Jerome was able to acquire donated art from Dameron with the understanding that one of the finished cases would be donated to the Haven fund.
Jerome is the sole owner of the black cases he's referenced "righty".
The red & grey "righty" cases belong to me.
In addition there were a few "lefty" cases, one of which is the sole "green case" (this previously mentioned case is the one I donated to the haven fund)
The other "lefty" cases are mine as well.
For the record.... In all, there will never be more than 11 cases with the Dameron art produced.
(a few of the eleven are in limbo)

P.S. The previously posted Red Dameron case is no longer available.

P.S.S To Jerome, thank you for your help.

I agree. I am a larger fan of the original personally and hope we do not see anymore on the market as I find this to be a very valuable and wodnerful item to house my 1st Slinger. It just screams coolness... When the one went for $550 I was not surprised. I would say they are worth no less than $500 and I would value the original 6 even a tad more. Great project guys... just great!

It just seems like there is a lot of demand for this product. Everyone likes them, and I want one but I am not rich enough (or foolish enough) to pay double what they were originally solicited for.

Even though I think the cases are cool, I do not think they are $600 cool. I would be in for one at the original price ($249+ shipping) but of course that was four years ago.

I feel for the craftsman who produces these. At a $300 price point he could probably sell 50 of them over time.

That is understandable but it seems like the increase in value is due to more the purposeful keeping of the limitation low, instead of the actual craftsmanship of the work (which upon many recommendations is pretty good)

Cook I am not trying to throw sour grapes at you of RF or anyone who has been involved with the production/distribution of these. (I haven't read the full thread seeing how the first go round was 4 years ago.)

I am appreciative of the fact that folks generate special projects on these boards and I myself have been able to buy in on a few of them.

I'm not irritated except for the fact that I really want one of the metal cases and i'm unlikely to get one because i doubt I will be willing (or able) to pay the premium price that these seem to be commanding (or are they really? I'm unsure the price is definitively set for the second generation because i haven't seen it advertised)

I guess if anything I am a little peeved that it seems to be a behind closed doors sale or that you may have to be part of the "good ole boys" network to get one. (and of course i could be completely wrong in my characterization of that)

The fact that the item seems to be hot and sought after yet it is still (perhaps purposefully) kept to a small limitation kind of perplexes me as well.
