I just reorganized my main bookcase since getting quite a few books in since the last time I got it put in order. The cabinet was made by my husband's grandfather, not really built to display books, but does a fairly good job of it, while keeping them safe. My 2nd cabinet displaying mostly standard 1st printings is a much more utilitarian open book case.

Thanks Merlin, it's a start. Not bad when my first (DT2 first Edition) came when I was 16 or 17. I'm thinking I'm going to buy a new Phil Hale signed copy of that to upgrade. That was always my favorite artwork anyway.

Okay, I just pulled the gun on it! I remembered the face of my father.

I don't think I ever got a good picture of this. Here is the Chadbourne remarque from my Scribner 1st Edition of Doctor Sleep.

Thanks Frik, not entirely new, but positioned well to outgrow my book cabinet (without modifications) before too much longer. :) I'll have to figure out a more secure way to keep the shelves up when they're full of book weight.

My actual SK signatures jump all over the map and due to the withering S/L numbers of the later published DT, I don't even have a consistency there. The best that I got was the #180 on my TWTTK. Now on the other hand, I've now got a consistency going with CD with Carrie (and it's MOUNDS of extra artwork) :) & 'Salem's Lot with #95 and after a few random numbers on the PS Anniversary Editions with Christine & Pet Sematary I've now settled into a fun #7 for Carrie, Thinner, (upcoming) Skeleton Crew & beyond.

If I started gathering a 'critical mass' around my DT #180 (or CD #95 or PS #7) then I'd be able to start putting a little more focus to my searches. It will all come, just waiting for the pieces to fall into place. That's the fun of it all!

Now there will be a lull for a while, after the Revival Slipcover. So, guesses on what will come 1st: 'Salem's Lot, Skeleton Crew or the Carrie Art Portfolio? (with 1 remarque by Vladislave Tikulik and I think 2 by Chadbourne, hard to remember at this point! I just kept opting in for everything CD kept adding to it. I don't think I want to total it up. :Ball Kick:)

So I need to win a prize or two to keep them endorphins running!

Like many of us, I now have a flat-signed 1st/1st of Finders Keepers thanks to Kevin E and his lovely wife for, though not GIVING it away, giving me That Amazing Deal on this. It's the sloppiest signature in my collection, but I'm just as happy to have it as I am of ANY of my SK books.

Murphy's Law is that just yesterday is when my IRS refund came in, which I invariably would have used to attend the event had it shown up just a few weeks earlier! OK, pictures all over the place of FK, but here are mine:

I had a Half Price Books open just a few blocks away a couple of weeks ago, so decided to go take a look today. Other than what you see on my Collection thread, I don't have many other printed SK. I got rid of them with space concerns back in college. Clearly, I wish I still had them all, but I'm glad to start getting at least some $5.99 placeholder editions. I didn't have a good enough of a cell connection to be able to pull up the catalog so I was using the 1st Edition guide at stephenkingcollector.com. I'm seeing some discrepancies though, now that I'm comparing to the Catalog here.

First is a nice copy of Eyes Of The Dragon. I assume this is a BCE, no price on DJ (which is embossed and not very faded!, but has a few 1/2 inch tears). The book itself is nearly pristine (it has 1 page that is folded over) and has the "Copyright © Stephen King, 1987 First published in 1987 by Viking Penguin Inc.", but has white pastdowns & the other identifying part on the CP page starts with 'Composition by NK Graphics, Keene, NH.
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm3/TCCBodhi/Book%20Shelf/Eyes%20Of%20The%20Dragon%20-%20BTMC/IMAG2666_zpsr9rmv9yf.jpg

The 2nd one I picked up today is Christine, which looks like it is undeniably a proper 1st. DJ is in good shape for a 30+ year old book, boards aren't worn through. I'm pretty pleased with this one.

Nice! How many more 1st/1sts to go?

TCCBodhi
07-22-2015, 10:16 AM
Oh, nearly all of them. Purged nearly my entire collection in college because I didn't have room for them. Only kept a handful that were important to me, and those unfortunately are well-read, so they'll need to be replaced at some point as well. I think the only true 1st I got yesterday was Christine. I think the others are BCE's. From A Buick 8 is a full paper binding, though I don't know where the poster came from, I need to research that more. As far as the EOTD, the pastedowns are the wrong color, and the text on the publisher page doesn't match the 3 known states for the 1st editions from the 3 various printers.

killjoy72
07-22-2015, 11:47 AM
I have that same FAB8. I found it several years at an antique store still sealed with the poster.
Fortunately, most King firsts are pretty easy to find. Good luck with the hunt!

Nice pull Seth. Seems like your HPB are of better quality than mine. One of them near me hit rich with King every once in awhile but not very often.

TCCBodhi
08-04-2015, 09:53 AM
Thanks. HPB is based in Dallas. I have no idea if perhaps the books tend to come back here for redistribution to the rest of the chain, but seeing what I got here at this REALLY SMALL one, I think I may visit some of the others in town, starting with the Flagship store, though that is likely to be a bust. They may have any of the signed ones that might be floating around the city though.

Yes, I'm VERY happy to have Revival and The Stand (though unsigned, that will give me something to work for) and the Talisman from my Uncle(in-law) from my deceased Aunt's(in-law) collection. I really miss that we were only able to have one real King conversation before she passed and that she never got to show the collection to me herself. Though largely unsigned, it was really quite beautiful to see.

Revival is of course very hot right now, and the search continues for a reputable HC copy, but even if I don't find one, I can still have a quite rare Full Trilogy (assuming that I pick up the 3rd easily enough) though not quite prime state. It takes enough of the pressure off that I won't be jumping at every over-inflated copy out there, but waiting for the right deal.

NOW my problem is, now that I'm reassembling a collections of 1sts, which I had largely gotten rid of in college, is that I need to redesign or figure out where to put a new bookcase/bookshelf in my already near-Hoarder level apartment! :) Even my Collectible Bookcase has now outgrown the Collectible editions that I have, leaving me to figure out a way to strengthen the top two shelves to safely hold book weight. Book Collector Problems.

This Cujo is actually going back I'm afraid. It was supposed to have been Fine/Fine; but since I bought the book during a site-wide sale they wouldn't agree to a later small $10-20 discount/credit outside of a simple return of the book. It's a shame that they were that inflexible. I probably won't buy from the site again, and I had been planning on picking up a bunch of the common 1st's from them. I don't think I'll mention the site. I think others use them just fine, it just was not a great experience for me. Individual mileage may vary.

Just a small addition of one of those core items of any Dark Tower collection. For $20 I picked up the Ned Dameron Waste Lands. A bit of damage on the envelope that wasn't disclosed in a very forthright way by the seller and the USPS also put their own "stamp" on the package in spite of careful packaging, but the prints are all fine. For $20, I'm not going to worry too much about it.

If you care to see a bunch of dark, reference-only pics of prints that are reproduced much better elsewhere, then HERE THEY ARE (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=813).

I think it looks pretty snazzy, and would LOVE to see more have their Collections shown like this on their Initial Post. It would be extremely interesting, informational and would help IMMENSELY when we get to the Secret Santa time of year, rather than poring over dozens of pages of postings. That is fun too, but this kind of post would be a GREAT timesaver.

Well dammit now I am going to spend even more time here editing...

TCCBodhi
11-23-2015, 10:50 AM
It made sense to me to do this both as my "brag list", but also as a good, easy place to keep a list so that I don't end up with duplicates and will serve as a good itemized list for the insurance agent.

jsmcmullen92
11-23-2015, 11:00 AM
How do you insure yours? I need to renegotiate my coverage to account for my library but still trying to figure out how to price it.

TCCBodhi
11-23-2015, 11:05 AM
Well, right now, I'm still just under the blanket renter's policy, but I think I'm expanding to the point where I'll need to have a rider for the books, or their own separate floater policy. I've not yet really had that discussion with my agent yet though. At my level, it really shouldn't be much of an expense, I'm just getting a little nervous about not having them being specifically covered.

TCCBodhi
11-23-2015, 11:09 AM
I would think that the agent would probably want itemized lists, and probably sources for estimates, at least those above certain levels.

jsmcmullen92
11-23-2015, 11:20 AM
yeah that's what I have been fighting. My coverage is minimum right now and I am worried that they will see each book worth what they came out at price not today's inflated prices (ex: Carrie - $5.95 and Firestarter S/L - $35)

TCCBodhi
11-23-2015, 11:43 AM
It might take a little work to make them understand, but once they make a correlation of a book edition to a piece of jewelry, I think they'll understand enough to be able to cover them correctly...with replacement cost rather than an equivalent cost of some sort.

zelig
11-23-2015, 11:53 AM
You could use Collectibles Insurance. There was some discussion somewhere about this. I think this is the company: http://collectinsure.com.

jsmcmullen92

So i just tried a quote for $10,000 in coverage and it said it would estimate at $70 doesn't say yearly or monthly or what but it's a start

TCCBodhi
11-23-2015, 12:39 PM
I would expect that to be a yearly quote; that would be very high to be a monthly premium for that amount of coverage.

It's been a busy day here with things I can show, and other things that I can't. With Secret Santa purchases, a couple that I just couldn't resist getting myself, and seemingly a lot of Pre-Order items either coming, or coming soon, it will be a busy season. Here is what today brought.

My husband can't really keep track of what I have/don't have, or what exactly he'd be looking for even if he did know what I wanted, but he DID know that I didn't have "the one that just came out" so he came home from errands with Bazaar Of Bad Dreams (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=856) to surprise me. He's a keeper.

Then the mail brought The Stephen King Companion (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=855), which looks to be a great read, and is my first official purchase from Betts Books. It came with a cool photo printout of one of the Chadbourne artworks that is reproduced in the book, which I couldn't get a decent snapshot of, but you probably all know what it looks like anyway. The snapshot I DO have for you is the detail of the David Williamson autograph (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/855/IMG_5335.JPG) so we can all work on forging it for big bucks on ebay! (Thank you, David!)

Now, as great as SK is at the short story form, I think one of his contemporaries, Raymond Carver, really was a master. I've been reading a dogeared paperback on roadtrips when we get tired of music for several decades. ABE's newsletter a few months back showed off a bunch of the Franklin Library Covers, and I saw their edition of Where I'm Calling From (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=854) for the first time. I've been looking for a cheap copy of it since, but usually see it in the $75-$100+ range, more than I want to pay; however I found a BIN ebay auction on this Like New copy last week for less than $50 and jumped on it. Carver must have signed these just shortly before he died in 1988. I wish I knew how many of these there are, but that doesn't seem to be common knowledge on these editions. This could very likely be the best looking book in my bookcases though.

Thanks, they're "little" things in the scheme of SK Collector Items, but they are some of those essential items of a basic collection which is where I'm trying to get back to. I inadvertently had 75% of a complete collection from Pet Sematary through the late 90s, but got rid of them after moving them too many times. Oh well, it gives me the fun (and expense) of recollecting them! And I do enjoy showing off my progress even though they aren't ultra-rare items. Thanks for the affirmation everyone.

I sold 2 boxloads of random nothing books at HPB for $25. Here is what I got today in their place: 1 in the mail and 4 at HPB. No major showpieces, but did fill in a number of holes in my US 1st Collection (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?15046-Book-Collection-TCCBodhi).

First of all, I opened the door to see a nice CD box containing this, which I picked up for $49.95 (using my 50% off CDCC Gift Certificate Balance)!!!
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/804/medium/Dark_Man1.jpg
It's been said before, but the CDCC membership is SO worth it's cost!

Then the HPB books:

$6.99 - 20%= $5.59

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/804/medium/Everything_s_Eventual.jpg
$9.99 - 20%= $7.99

I'm in LOVE with this one. It creeps me out SOOO much!

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/967/img535resized.jpg
An excellent remarque from the cover image.

Next up is a Family Portrait in my Doctor Sleep S/L that Vinny did a great job of organizing to show the family relationships.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/820/medium/img530resized.jpg

Next is what I had him do in the Trade Doctor Sleep that already had a Chadbourne 'Fly Guy' on the endpapers (shown). Vinny flipped the perspective and we get to see Dan & Azzy at the hospice:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/799/medium/img532resized.jpg
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/799/medium/img533resized.jpg

Finally, I think my favorite of the bunch. I really enjoyed some of the party guests that Vinny AND Don Maitz had done, so I asked for something in that direction. He did a great job (and I think it shows that he's maybe watching season 2 of 'Preacher'. ;)

TCCBodhi
12-29-2017, 05:50 PM
I haven't really unrolled it for longer than to see what it was, but it was VERY dense. I think you'd have to look closely to see where some of those lines/connections go to. Gillian James appears to be a blogger who likes charts and graphs: from her blogspot page "What's with the Flowcharts?
I love order. I like knowing how things go together. As a pop culture junkie, I see the connections in book and films and seek to lay 'em out so they are easier for me (and others) to understand.
I made my first chart about the novel 'A Visit to the Goon Squad' and the internet said, "We like that."
I made my Stephen King Universe Chart and the internet said "You are speaking our language!!!"
So my passion for charts and Infographics was ignited.

I hope that people can appreciate my charts as pieces of design, even if they are unfamiliar with the subject matter. Or that one of my charts might inspire them to go and read that book or series, watch that movie, or just to appreciate the interconnectivity of the universe...."
