Evidently King is writing a novel titled "Joyland" that is about an amusement-park serial killer.
No word yet if a specialty press and/or signed limited is in the works.

The first question that comes to mind is whether or not this is a serial killer in one specific amusement park (which is my guess) or a serial killer that hunts only in amusement parks.

You knave, the first question is-are there going to be Signed Limited editions, and if so who is doing it, and how do I get to the front of the queue?

I'd guess the first option of a "resident" serial killer in an ammusement park.

I wonder if the killer uses the rides as the weapon? Ever seen the movie Mr. Bean? That virtual coaster shook Bean up pretty bad....haha.

an amusement-park serial killer.

This makes me think about both The Funhouse and Rollercoaster.

I hope SK doesn't abandon the project like he did with The Plant because of possible similarities.

Funland by Richard Laymon had a similar concept so I am curious to see how SK approcahes the story.

The premise doesn't inspire me or anything....but I wouldn't be worried about SK finding a unique take on the subject matter.

'The Shining' wasn't the first haunted house story, after all...haha...

I'm guessing that this will be a bit like "The Phantom of the Opera" or "Quasimodo". Just a guess though...To answer the question I think this will be a small press run like BB.

I enjoyed The Plant and wished he finished it. I think he could probably tackle any similar story with his slant on it. He most likely has drawers full of abandoned projects and stories that were too similar to something else. We're lucky to get as much as we do from SK.

Most of SK's limiteds came out along with the 1st's starting with Firestarter. I think The Stand was the first special S/L that came out years after the 1st but it was based on the longer version. So, maybe the Illustrated 'Salem's Lot Edition or the Easton Dead Zone.

I wonder if King is getting fed up with the signed editions. He doesn't appear to enjoy that aspect of the process or the book signings. And with the recent screw ups from S&S the whole process left as many people frustrated as grateful to get a signed copy. I'm guessing it is also a terrific headache for everyone. And the ebay reselling appears to be a touchy point with him and Ms Mod. I enjoy getting a signed book as much as anyone, but it sometimes seems like acquiring these books has become its own objective. I can't imagine that pleases SK too much. It's part of his new release routine, but I wouldn't be shocked if he stops doing it. He certainly doesn't need the extra money.

skyofcrack

I would rather there were fewer of them but I hate the ones that are really expensive like $1000 or more because they'll only get more expensive after being released.

I hope to heaven that any signed limited edition is handled by an independent publisher who knows what they are doing and let the big publishers stick to the mass markets.

Joyland to be published under the Hard Case Crime imprint in June 2013:

http://www.thebookseller.com/news/new-stephen-king-novel-hard-case-crime.html

A new novel by Stephen King, Joyland, is to be published by Titan Books imprint Hard Case Crime in June 2013.

The book will be released as a paperback first, with e-book to follow at a later date. King said: "I loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we're going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book."

The title, set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever.

Hard Case Crime editor Charles Ardai bought world rights in the title, with King's novel The Colorado Kid previously released under the imprint. The deal does not affect King's relationship with his usual UK publisher, Hodder.

Ardai said: "Joyland is a breathtaking, beautiful, heartbreaking book. It's a whodunit, it's a carny novel, it's a story about growing up and growing old, and about those who don't get to do either because death comes for them before their time.

"Even the most hardboiled readers will find themselves moved. When I finished it, I sent a note saying: 'Goddamn it, Steve, you made me cry.'"

There has to be, with it being a paperback 1st edition someone is bound to snap up the rights for a hardcover, hopefully not JUST a s/l that would suck big time.

With this coming June next year when is Dr Sleep due?, this year or next?.

You know, I have always been a big supporter of the OC, but for the past few years their focus seems to be on only the current items they are selling. A few years ago I ordered Slipcases for my HC comics (w/remarques) and they never came and I had to get a refund. I really hate to say it. Damn all these limiteds!

I did a conversion and I came up with $86 for the limited. Was the price £55.99?

Becca that is what I figured. I ordered a S/L - had issues with teh web site but was persistent. I had to get this as I had to pass on teh S/Ls of Dr Sleep and The SHining.

Still do not know ho much shipping will be though!

Evilash grabbed #26, so I'm guessing they were available for pre-order like the numbered and trade editions.

When I saw Michael's message this morning, I ordered it direct from the Titan Books website. It said my order had gone through, but never got an email. So I emailed Titan Books and got an immediate response saying that if the email wasn't sent out, then the order did not go through. She asked if I had ordered from the Forbidden Planet website. I told her no, so she had me place my order again through there. Got my confirmation. Good thing, since it is now Sold Out. Big shout out to Michael for the early update!

Charles Ardai gave me some great information about a few of the decisions they made for their edition, especially the pricing, which I thought was really interesting:

"Titan was conscious of the fact that your highest-priced limiteds often have more bells and whistles than ours will... We wouldn't want anyone to look at our (extremely handsome, but not as fancy) edition and complain that they got less for their money than they get from you or Subterranean. This way, that shouldn't happen."

I happen to think their editions are going to extremely nice editions, so this is a great deal.

I received my confirmation e-mail about 15 minutes after placing the order. I also spoke with someone at the company due to a possible security code issue with American Express cards (they ask for the last three on the back when most companies want the four digit code on the front). The representative indicated that someone is processing the orders by hand, so it will take a while. It would also appear that they will be canceling orders that requested more than one copy, although I wouldn't image that they'll be cancelling the order completely, just any excess copies.

I get my employees to order them for me. The ones who get the Lettered editions are first on the promotion list. The ones who do not get any... well...

I am reading my wife's leadership book for her masters class - I think that style is called Punitive, yet character building (or builds faster internet skills)

I cancelled my UK order and got an S/L through the US site, because I figuredthe shipping charges would be high for the UK fulfillment. So there should be one S/L on the UK site for a moment or two.

For some reason, every time I see NSFS, my mind reads NSFW...

It took a good 15-20 minutes to get the confirmation e-mail, unlike the UK one, which was instant.

Just ordered an S/L via the US site... just waiting on the email confirmation.

Just tried calling customer support and seeing if I could confirm orders that way - rang and rang and rang.. no one answered and finally said call failed on my BlackBerry Screen.

something like.... processing error.......

The same happened to me and when I tried again it worked.

Funny.... big problems with the forbidden page,
but NO problems to order the S/L from the Titan page.....
I hope...

For those just joining us, use this link to buy the signed numbered edition: https://www.nsfsmagazine.com/secure/Stephen-King-Joyland/Book.html (https://www.nsfsmagazine.com/secure/Stephen-King-Joyland/Book.html)

I ordered a copy an hour ago, others have ordered more recently.

I ordered a lettered and a regular signed limited through the UK site this morning. Got the confirmation email, but just now received an email saying that they were sorry but the lettered had sold out before my order went through.

What was lost in the buying spree (at least to me) is that this will be released on 11 June - 2013. That is less than a month away - when was the last time you pre-ordered a SK s/l or lettered book and received it in 4 weeks????

12:02 pm mountain time, just got my S/L confirmation. This was not a direct S/L order, but rather e-mail acceptance of the S/L rather than Lettered.

That's it. I must check this site at least every hour. Luckily was able to order thru NSFS.

So what is a lettered edition gonna cost on eBay from someone who flips the book?

George at C-Springs
05-13-2013, 10:22 AM
$500 easy, $650 is a good bet, $800 or more might be pushing it. But I'll bet you see at least one copy for $2000, it never fails.

$500 easy.

I dunno....is it going to be a paperback?

Based on the price...I think they are taking the trade edition and thwoing it in a traycase.

I think the closest for a Limited Edition would be our edition of Full Dark, No Stars, unless I'm forgetting something: announced on 10/19/2010 and shipped on 12/15/2010, a little less than two months. The Lettered Edition, as always, took longer.

Tippy makes a good point. Based on an earlier comment that the unsigned edition is the "same" as the numbered edition, that would lead one to believe that the only difference between the two is the signature. It may be the same for the lettered edition, with the only difference between it and the numbered edition being the traycase. As far as I can tell, the website does not list any other differences between the two. Any thoughts?

Also, I wonder if Cemetery Dance and/or others will be designing a slipcase for the numbered edition (and possibly the unsigned edition as well), as it appears that it will not come with one...

It looks like that's the only difference. It's a trade hardcover with a tipped-in signed and numbered page. Still... for $75, well worth it!!

If Brian hadn't spoken up for these guys, I'd say all of this was too good to be true and that we'd all been had. Here's hoping that the S/L has something a little extra special about it (besides the signature), even if it is just a slipcase or ribbon marker .... something to distinguish it from the trade.

Hey Brian, your surprise better be good tomorrow ... or these guys may have stolen your spotlight.

I think we broke the USA sales info first, thanks to the incredibly brilliant work by Chad (cit74).
Thanks to biomieg (Michael) for breaking the UK news here.
Just another reason to check this site as often as possible.

Hot deals show up from constant checking of ebay.
Quick links help our members with buying a lettered or S/L.
Brilliant tech works shows the "back door' to a crashed order site.

On and on.

I'll merge this with the Joyland S/L thread in a while.

The best I can recall is SIX STORIES in 1997. We sent our checks to Philtrum Press for $80 (plus postage) and got the books a couple of weeks later. Now THAT is how is should be!
