My collection is nowhere near as expansive and impressive as I'd like it to be...that crazy little thing called cash always gets in my way :)

Most of my books are well read paperbacks, but with stories that I love I aim to get good hardback editions too. It's very much a collection in progress!

The Joe Hill and the Neil Gaiman (Stardust) are my only signed books I own to date. Also pictured here are the UK hardcovers of Anansi Boys and Lisey's Story:

You're quick Story!! Just uploading some more...hang tight :D

Non King books here, but editions I'm fond of - they're from The Folio Society, which my uncle is a member of. He sends me these books at christmas from time to time.

Top L-R: 1066 And All That, Cold Comfort Farm, Leave It To P Smith and bottom is Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass.

My DT collection (I only have paperbacks of DoTT and WaG, which my sister currently has).
Jerome very kindly sent me the Grant Hardback of WotC, which has given me the aim of collecting the entire series in Grant hardbacks.

Lastly - for now (I'll take some more pics tomorrow) - are my DT comics - had to rely on Ebay for those, none of the comic stores near me had them, and King short story magazines (also courtesy of Jerome  )

More King paperbacks -note the TDT.com bookmark in IT

My Colorado Kid - my local bookstore got in only one of each - I couldn't afford to get them all at the time, so this was my favourite cover:

A hardback would be lush!! I get most of my paperbacks from second hand stores and rummage sales - it's crazy what people throw out!

Needless - I read it about halfway through a couple of years back, but never finished it. I am going to pick it back up after I finish my current book. I didn't stop because it was bad, but it was to hard to get into...for me anyway.

I agree those Folio books are nice. They are book club books, but they are very nice productions. It's great to get something like The Alice in Wonderland books that are displayed in these colorful editions. They are much better than something you could buy at a bookstore.

This arrived in the mail today:
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/coraline.jpg?3197

It's signed by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean and is numbered 97 out of 1000:
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/sigged.jpg?8591

It almost makes up for the fact that Max (my youngest) ripped a page out of my Colorado Kid today...I can't take a photo of it...its too distressing

Darkthoughts
04-04-2008, 01:49 AM
Thanks all :couple:

EOTD is one of my favourite King books anyway, but I'm especially pleased to have the hardback as the UK paperback doesn't have all the illustrations in it.

I can't tell if its a first though - it says it was published in 1987 then has some British Library Cataloguing info and an ISBN. Alot of UK firsts don't always have "first edition" in them. How do you tell?

NeedfulKings
04-04-2008, 05:51 AM
Is there a price on the back cover inside flap of the dust jacket? That, along with no additional printing history on the copyright page should make it a first. If there's no price, it's likely a book club book (Macdonald does both).

Mr. Rabbit Trick
04-04-2008, 06:01 AM
The price on the bottom of the left flap should be £10.95 net in UK only.

"First Printed in great Britan in 1987 by Macdonald & Co (Publishers) Ltd London & Sydney"

With no mention of later reprints.

Darkthoughts
04-04-2008, 06:53 AM

No, sadly not! Signed/HB I have Stardust, Coraline and M is for Magic. Interworld is paid for - just waiting for it really.

I have most other Gaiman books in paperback (except Anansi Boys which is HB) and the Sandman graphic novels (and some offshoots of those.) I'd love to get signed editions of them all though, especially American Gods, which I enjoyed immensely.

neilgaiman.net is Neil's official store. It's actually Dreamhaven books in Minneapolis, but it's close to where Neil lives, and he stops in multiple times a year and signs stock for his fans. You can even get them personalized. You can get whatever you want in stock signed, its fabulous. I've been buying all his trade editions when the get released, comics, books, audio books, whatever, and they come signed or personalized (just recently started using this), for the past few years.

Thanks John

Patrick - sadly no, I didn't meet him. I had a ticket for a London signing (of The Graveyard Book) in October but was unable to attend in the end and I'm COMPLETELY gutted about that!

It's actually from a site of his where you can buy the books and have him inscribe it to you. You can't give a specific inscription, you just have to choose from a list of occasions, ie birthday, christmas etc. There was also an "other" category, which I chose and put "for paying my bar tab"

I once had an inscribed copy of Wolves in the Walls. It was destroyed in an tragic water pipe bursting at my wife's old apartment. It was after we had moved into our house, but we still had some stuff there. A water pipe ruptured and ruined quite a lot of stuff before we knew what had happened.
I did get to attend a reading he did here in the states though, and it was pretty good. That's where I got the book.

I'm really excited to read it!! I didn't think I'd be able to get it over here, but a guy on the staff in my local bookstore is a real graphic novel freak and orders in the best stuff.

They have the Gunslinger Born and Long Road Home hardcovers too, but I'd rather collect the comics because the backstories (which I believe are excluded from the hardcovers) are my favourite part.

From a collector's pov, they are a waste of shelf space. You should not pay any more than 50p for a UK book club edition.

jhanic
12-11-2008, 08:28 AM
As a general statement, that's true, but there are a few book club editions that are collectible:

US
Storm of the Century (only hardcover publication)
Green Mile TPB (in slipcase)
Lisey's Story Gift Edition (in slipcase)

UK
Gerald's Game (BCA first world publication 2000 copies)
Dolores Claiborne (BCA first world publication 2000 copies)

There may be others but that's all that come to mind right now.

So, it's generally a case of mass production? (excluding those listed above)

Mr T - it didn't state in the auction that the Night Shift I bought was BCA - which is something I personally make a point of if I'm selling, but I don't have a copy of Night Shift anyway so it was cool :) Plus it was £2 inc. p&p so I did better than I would buying it new from waterstones :D

jhanic
12-11-2008, 12:40 PM
It's not just mass production (especially when you consider most of King's latest works had close to million-copy print runs) but the fact that there is generally no way of telling if a book club edition was a first run or a later printing. There's just no indication (such as a numberline or price on the dust jacket) to indicate which printing you have.

John

CRinVA
12-11-2008, 02:50 PM
Typically the quality of the BC Version is not up to the standards (i.e. cheaper paper, how the book is bound, ...) of the regular editions also. Book Club editions are there simply to get more people to buy hardcovers and to read the story at a more affordable price. :-)

That's true for US book club editions. The UK is different. The UK book has 2 book club publishers, Guild Publishing and Book Club Associates (BCA). The sales of book club editions are many times greater than the trade editions.

The BCA ones are smaller and always print the printing number on the copyright page. i.e 12th impression (date).

Darkthoughts
12-24-2008, 08:15 AM
Well, I find it quite hard to get hold of them full stop where I live. I have to rely on ebay for my DT comics...and I've kinda gone off ebay after a few bad runs of not receiving my items this year. So, at the moment I'm solely concentrating on getting the standard issues for each run.

turtlex
12-24-2008, 08:27 AM
Oh, that stinks. I would go nuts if I won comics and then didn't get them!

I could direct you to a couple of online places where you can buy them, but to be honest, well - ebay the best best since they aren't exactly inexpensive.

Darkthoughts

I got refunded because I used paypal - but it was still really disappointing. I try to go for UK sellers too, otherwise the postage gets ridiculous.

I got the last lot I posted in here from a great guy on ebay, so I'll buy from him in future if he keeps getting the comics in stock.

Hey Lisa, do you have any of the promo stuff? I forget.

Yes, the issues come out about once a month until a story arc is finished, then sometimes there is a longer break in between.

Check out the great comic checklists that turtlex put together. They're in the Comic Tower. They give the expected release timeline.

 I'm just quite practical in that way I s'pose. Like, I like to have a good/the best edition of any book I've read and enjoyed because I will reread and keep them forever. But the promo stuff I don't really see any purpose to (unless it's a chapbook or something of that sort). I think you go for that sort of stuff if you're the kind of person who likes to have the entire collection of a given thing, or perhaps if you view your collection as an investment?

The only branching out I aim to do DT comics wise, is to get the almanacs, they look groovy!

:couple: Glad to help out when I can. Might take you up on the UK comic con offer, my friend!

Oh, this is sorta goofy but this is the way that Marvel describes the Almanac : Woe unto those who traverse beyond the cursed Borderlands into End-World! ’Tis a twisted and desolate realm where it seems as if the world passed ages ago. From the blasted landscapes of Thunderclap to the frozen heights of Empathica, End-World shows no mercy to unwary young Gunslingers. In a world where information – and a bit of luck – is the key to survival, the End-World Almanac serves as your guide to the Badlands, Le Casse Roi Russe and beyond!

It's basically a sort of tour of End World, with drawning and descriptions, etc. Has some cool interpretations of animals, etc. I think it's pretty neato, myself. A nice accompanyment to the series.

Personally, I am really digging the variant covers. I love the different looks each have. Jae Lee does an AWESOME job with his covers - he's such an amazing talent, but some of the other books, they are so completely different, its just fun to collect them.

Some cool varients :

Glad you're enjoying the comics.

What's up with that Gaiman book? I've not heard of it, but he's done plenty of work I'm not familiar with.

It's very lovely artwise! It's a short story collection...my local bookstore is pretty random - they get these odd little treasures in every now and then

Bonus fact: I originally bought THE KILLING JOKE in London the year it was released. I read it on the plane ride home.

Ha! No way!! That's too cool. I had a battered old copy ages ago, but it got lost when I used to move house alot.

I will take some decent pictures of my Talisman/Black House gift set and get them in here soon!

Ok, few things to add to my collection...

This is the gift set I won on this year's Big Give. It's seriously my favourite book(s) I own. I LOVE these stories and have always wanted to get a collectable edition, but could never afford it (especially with the postage on top) so I was beyond happy when it arrived.

Me too!! :nana:

Thanks guys, I'm really getting into my book collection in a serious way...down side is I have to let my husband go to more poker games as a compromise

You have to be quite picky about who/what you start collecting though, don't you. I mean, for example, the Jim Butcher signed ed of Storm Front is the first in a series of about 12 books and the series is ongoing. I have them all in trade, but sub press just bought out the next signed ed and I'm thinking "...Oh no! Do I buy it and commit to getting all of them?!" They're numbered editions too, and I got the deal where you get given a matching number if you'd bought the first one.

My main collecting aims this year and next are to complete/update my DT comics, my Gaiman sigs collection and my DMG DT collection. It's quite a way to go on all fronts, so I don't know if I ought to indulge in an entire other collection.

I don't know if I ought to indulge in an entire other collection.

What kind of question is that? Of course you should!

You've got a really nice collection! I really like the Talisman/Black House gift set+remarque and the DMG 1st of DOTT. I really need to get one of those.

Can't wait to see more.

Great additions, Lisa. That remarque is especially cool!

I say go for the other series if you really want it. If you wait, you'll just kick yourself for not jumping in for the matching number set when you had the chance.

Remember, of course, that you are asking for collecting advice from a bunch of enablers.

I don't think he's a very well known author, but this is the sequel to The Glass Books Of The Dream Eaters - they're quite Sherlock Homes-esque, but with added debauchery and bloodshed :D

Plus I was born in 1973 so I was chuffed to get that number!

It cheered me up because I just had to transfer £500 to my Dad's account to pay for our holiday (he put it on his credit card for me as I don't have one), so we were walking through the town centre back from the bank and I spied this through the window of the shop and saw it was only a pound, I was like "Dad, could you give me £1 to soften the blow of me having to pay you all that money?!" So really, it was free
