Entertainment Quality of the Stories: A

A minus, to be precise. I hate it when King writes "serious literature", like The Last Rung of the Ladder or The Woman in the Room. It is trivial, boring, and totally dissatisfying. Most of the rest were pretty entertaining.

Memorability of the Stories: A

Well yes, I do remember all of them.

Effectiveness of Plot Delivery in the Stories: A

Not really sure what it means, though.

Loved The Last Rung Of The Ladder. It is my favorite work by Stephen King. You talked about Blaze being a tearjerker, this one did it for me. I like the way we vote on these, very interesting and unique!

A

B

I remember more of the stories from Night Shift than from any other collection--even those published much more recently. And I think the ratio of good stories is strongest in this collection. Some of the stories might have reflected that King was quite young when he wrote them, so maybe they aren't as polished as later works. But that does not make them any less entertaining of effective.

The Last Rung on the Ladder is my favorite short story ever. The ending is an emotional punch in the gut. Maybe it spoke to me more because I have a younger sister and have always felt protective of her and she looked up to me. We played together as kids and got into trouble together, etc. I can see how it might not speak to everyone, but I can't for the life of me see how anyone could consider it trivial or boring.
