To refresh, books in Round 2 are NOT going head to head, just being graded individually. They will earn additional points, up to 3, and the top 10 then move on to Round 3, where books DO face off against each other.

I'm not sure I'm going to participate in round 2. I have a difficult time grading books based on plot and character development. I just know that I like what I like. Explaining why I like something is tough.

03-01-2012, 11:15 AM
what pablo said

I too noticed that grading does not reflect my opinion of a book as a book. Too much depends on how well it was written; hell, everything depends on it. Maybe we should include this criterion next time

Yes, it currently sits precariously in the tenth and final spot, with ten books remaining to be graded. Very likely it will get displaced, though not a given.

When this started I took all 60 books and sorted them into my order of preference. I had a top 20, a middle 20 and bottom 20. Actually it was a bottom 19 because there is one book I haven't read yet.

After the first round only 4 of my top 20, half of my middle 20 and all but 4 of my bottom 19 had been knocked out. Now with the second round not even complete all of my bottom 20 are out. 16 of my top 20 still remain including my overall #1.

quoted from another thread:

rereading Pet Sematary. Fantastically, exceedingly good.

Indeed, so sad it just missed the third round of the CRAs.

I just don't understand it. The Shining there and Pet Sematary not? It doesn't make sense.

I am not talking about Green Mile or 11/22/63, because I know that people love them dearly for some reasons that have eluded me all this time; but The Shining? It is good, nice, classic, all that; Pet Sematary is a masterpiece.

mae
03-28-2012, 08:30 AM
Pet Sematary also missed the 2009 CRAs, and just barely made it in 2010, so I'm not surprised. Saddened, though, as it's my favorite King work.

I'm pretty bummed that 2 of my favorites The Long Walk and Pet Semetary are next in line and just barely missed out. I'd definitely put them in there above others. Jean, do you have a top 10? I've been thinking of maybe trying to put together a ranking of the ones I've read.

I've been thinking of maybe trying to put together a ranking of the ones I've read.do it! I'd be extremely interested to know

I think for now my top ten is (without the DT)

1. It
2. The Stand.
3. Black House
4. Desperation
5. Duma Key
6. Pet Sematary
7. The Dead Zone
8. The Tommyknockers
9. Misery
10. From a Buick 8

The last place is very uncertain. It could just as well be 'Salem's Lot, or The Girl WLTG, Needful Things, or Under the Dome. I am doing a major (not total, though) re-read now, so there may be some changes.

01. The Stand (7.532633158) (94.16%)
02. It (7.495238095) (93.69%)

06. The Waste Lands (7.455128205) (93.19%)
07. The Drawing of the Three (7.330503678) (91.63%)
08. Different Seasons (7.305555556) (91.32%)
09. The Shining (7.300000000) (91.25%)
10. Duma Key (7.276353277) (90.95%)

I really don't have any problem with the Top-10 going into Round 3. All are great books. King is just such an amazing writer than it's nearly impossible to limit his oeuvre to just the ten best books.

Also, the above books break down chronologically thus:

1970s: The Shining (1977), The Stand (1978)
1980s: Different Seasons (1982), It (1986), The Drawing of the Three (1987), Misery (1987)
1990s: The Waste lands (1991), The Green Mile (1996)
2000s: Duma Key (2008)
2010s: 11/22/63 (2011)

So a rather fair and balanced career retrospective, in my view.
