Loved the first novelette, slept through the second and can hardly remember what the rest was about.

It was about love and war, and finding your way through insane times.

4. I really enjoyed it, particularly the title story. the rest were pretty good, overall...so it averages out.

Same. For some reason, the 2nd story appealed to me almost as much as the first one. Finding yourself addicted to something - not drugs, not alcohol, but something that consumes your life - is a theme that seems to me more important now more than ever. The three stories after that were ok, but the first 2 were the best, I think.

It was about love and war, and finding your way through insane times.Yes, I remember this much. Couldn't help falling asleep over it, though. On the other hand, now that you mentioned war, I remember liking the third story - but only the story, not the writing. So it may be a 3+ from me; not that it changes anything.

So there were five stories there?! Oh Lord, however hard I'm trying, I come up with only four! Don't want to either google or look for my copy - want to remember the fifth myself.

had to google it. The fifth I couldn't remember if my life depended on it was Why We're in Vietnam. I do remember some bits and pieces but I was sure they were parts of the other four.

It's unique, novellas which blend together, all around one big untold tale. And I think that lack of coherence fits very well since in this case, as I just said, uncertainty is actually a major theme.

According to Wiki the 5 stories are:

Low Men in Yellow Coats (Bobby, Carol and Sully as a kids)
Hearts In Atlantis (Carol meets Pete in college)
Blind Willie (Willie the Vietnam vet begging for money)
Heavenly Shades of Night are Falling (Bobby comes back to his childhood home)

I gave it a 5. I don't think there was a bad story out of the 5 and I love how they were all related by one character or another. Plus I believe it's one of the best endings I've ever read. Similar to the ending of 11/22/63. The connection to the DT was good as well.

... now that you mentioned war, I remember liking the third story - but only the story, not the writing. So it may be a 3+ from me; not that it changes anything. There's some truth to that. I'd hope the fourth would bump it a bit more, though. Too bad you don't recall it.

2. I remember nothing about any of the last three stories. Liked the first two, but were bored to death by the rest.

I gave it a 5. Mostly on the strength of the first 2 stories, but I really liked the others as well.

Never read. Maybe it's just from the titles of the stories alone, but this sounds pretty boring. :(
