5! Shawshank and The Body are both amazing. The Breathing Method was a fun read (4), and I haven't read Apt Pupil yet.

I had seen various movies based on his books, but in 1982 or perhaps '83, this was the first Stephen King book I ever read. It taught me that King was a better writer than I had any idea, and that he wasn't all about fantastical monsters.

If I could, I would give this book a 6 on a scale of 1-5.

LOL, Patrick, why do you keep referring to some mythical movies? wtf do they have to do with the books?

This book produced two of the best movies based on a SK story IMO.

yes. Especially Stand By Me.Agreed.
I was so disappointed with Apt Pupil movie, though. Not the best of these novellas, but it IS better than that flick.

A definite 5.
And Shannon you need to read Apt Pupil. Easily one of the most disturbing stories I've read.

Because movies have a huge influence in setting foundations for expectations. Perhaps it's an American thing, or perhaps it's just me.

Because my initial opinion of Stephen King while growing up was based on seeing movies based on his books. I thought that all he did was in-your-face horror. The book, DIFFERENT SEASONS, one of the my first experiences reading him, completely changed and improved my view of Stephen King as a writer. Reading THE DEAD ZONE, PET SEMATARY, and THE TALISMAN solidified my new perspective.

5. Love the stories. Love the seasonal motif. The Body and Shawshank are my two favorite novellas. I need another copy of this one so that I can do a reread. Loaned mine out, never to be seen again.
