Because so many of us collectors have a one-track mind (like Calvin Tower) and rarely venture beyond the confines of Calvin's Corner, I wanted to start our own picture thread so that our "family" can share and enjoy little slices of life posted by members who reside here.

With that I will start off with a couple of my own:

I call this one: Autumn (leaf raking) Nightmare, or my back yard.

Holy crap, your backyard is huge! And look at all those leaves. Poor kid.

My property is 1 1/3 acres and it slopes steeply in the back after you get into the woods so it will never be developed. Lots of seer, wild turkeys, hawks etc. The wildlife is great, except when my oldest son got "skunked" when he took the food scraps out to the compost in the dark!

So did you buy 5 gallons of tomato juice to dunk him in?

Naw, we just told him he had to go live with the squirrels for three weeks!

Truely, I do not know. I was in Switzerland at the time. Will have to ask my wife what she did. I know she threw his shirt away and washed the hell out of his other clothes that took less of a direct hit.

We have a tradition in my family in that we celebrate the Summer and Winter Solstices and Spring and Fall Equinoxes.

Our Winter Solstice tradition is to lay out sleeping bags before the fireplace on the longest night of the year, tell stories, play games etc as a family, keep the fire buring all night long. Then in the morning we head down to the beach and welcome the sun back into the sky with rattles/noisemakers. This year, unfortunately, it was raining, so we did not see the return of the sun, but last year.....was phenomenal. Here are some pictures from last year's Winter Solstice so you get the idea.

Just seconds before the sun rises over the water on the horizon...

3 days on the big island (Hawaii), and 4 on Maui. I prefer Maui. but want my youngest to go to Volcano National Park, so therefore we go to the big island for a bit. I love the "Grand Canyon" on Kauai. The wife and I rode a Harley Davidson up there 5 years ago.

I was stationed in Hawaii in the 70's. Spent a week on Kauai - its awesome. Wiamea (sp?) Canyon is pretty cool! Also on the northern shore is a beach - the most photographed beach in the world - it's where they filmed Elvis' Blue Hawaii.

If you follow the trail along the coast line - to the left as you look out to sea - you meander through the neatest Tropical Rainforest and the most awesome water falls you will ever see. I had to take three pictures to get it all in. Top third, middle and bottom. It's really big I tell ya. Just be prepared to perhaps see a hiker or two going au natural! There is a family nudist beach if you folow the trail far enough! And if yer hungry on teh trail just pick a banana or a passion furit or mango - they are everywhere as I recall.

I met Warren Zevon in a bar at our hotel when I was tehre - it was way cool - before his became famous.

I have also been on the Big Island - there is actaully a snocapped mountain there! I was there on an operation for 30 days and froze my ass off the whole time. Also experienced an earthquake that was centered about 200 miles out to sea. Knocked me right out of my cot at 3 in the morning!

I was way way cool! Drank beers with him 'till the wee hours of the morning!

He was jsut at the bar - there was a three piece combo playing - piano, drums and bass. The Bass player got a phone call emergency and had to leave. WZ stepped up and said he could fill in on the Bass. After two songs the other members aid he was pretty good. WZ said "well I really am more comfortable on the keys" - so the piano player switched with him. He was awesome. He said he was a songwriter currently just having finished a few songs for Linda Rondstadt. He played Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me - a Rondstadt hit - he said the song wasn't yet released and he could get in trouble but since this was Kauai probably no one would ever know he played it. Then he launched into Thompson the Headless Machine Gunner and Werewolves of London. I heard all these before they hit the airwaves for the first time.

Unless of course he is a really really smart dog and has you bamboosled :-) You just get unconditional love from him/her! Right!!!!

We all make choices in life and have to live with them. If I had made the choices that Terry made I am sure that my financial situation would be different too! I dont' regret the choices I made - I love my family dearly and would do anything for any one of them!

just for the record.... i have two dogs... though they haven't gone to college, both are very smart- but accident prone. like i said... almost 2 grand in vet bills , just because they play a little rough.
then you can throw in the cost of redoing the floor, window sill, armoir, walls, etc. that these pups chewed up when i first got them (thank goodness they're out of that stage)... 15 hundred in new fencing (for a rental property that ain't mine).... because one of the pups can jump a 6 foot fence flat footed, a 1000 dollar kennel to house them when i am gone from home.... about a hundred socks...
well.... might as well have kids.
then there's the girlfriend that i have to entertain (wives you can eat with at home and just take out once every couple of months - girlfriends are a lot higher maintenance).
oh yeah... and there's the over 100 grand a year(48 year old single white male-no kid-no spouse- no house- to deduct)-tax bracket-thingy... that's possibly worth at least 2 kiddos in college i think.
yeah - i'm the one that will be paying for everyone else's health care when hillary gets elected.:arg:

anyway... i think i'll still take my 2 pups over your 4 kids in college - at least my puppies keep my feet warm and protect my book collection.

thanks for the  guys.

Despite the fact that I've rarely had time to work in the studio over the last few years, I managed to make it into a national print show that opens up this weekend.
My old print professor has been running the show for over 20 years. Every fall he brings in a well established printmaker or museum/gallery curator to jury the show. This year just under 1,000 prints were entered and about 100 made it into the show.
I entered a print I made last fall, which was the first relief print I had made in at least 6 years.

Oh, here at least that isn't a concern. If more than one snowflake sticks to the ground they close the schools and call in the national guard. It's not quite that bad, but they are ridiculous here about snow. After about an inch the local schools really do close, and people rush to the store to stock up on groceries, batteries, flashlights, etcetera. :panic: When they are done the roads are desolate.

How far is that stonehenge thing anyway?

Never been to Chiswick (pronounced Chiz-ick) myself, but heres a local site with things to do and restaurants and stuff:
http://www.chiswickw4.com/

Soho is cool, well London in general is pretty ace - theres so much to see in London, you're best to concentrate on a certain area each day.
Camden Market is a must imo, the British Museum is fantastic, as is the Natural History Museum. If you like chinese food you have to eat in China Town...what else...I dunno, best thing to do is buy this book:
Amazon.co.uk: The Rough Guide to London (Rough Guide Travel Guides): Books: Rob Humphreys
because it lists everything in London, so you can plan your own itinery (sp?).

Salisbury (Stonehenge site) is a lovely town, its roughly (very roughly) 80 miles from London and near to other really cool areas like Bath (old Roman city, said to be Terry Pratchett's inspiration for Ankh Morpork), Avebury (another stone circle site). Alot of this area (mainly comprising of Wiltshire and Gloucestershire) is known as the Cotswolds, its where I live too - theres alot of Roman and pagan sites not to mention awesome pubs

Oxford is not too far out of this area either, and if its books you're after you have to go there to visit Blackwells, the most amazing bookshop in the world. It houses the Norrington Room, which is the largest single display of books for sale in one room anywhere in the world (over 160,000 volumes in 10,000 square feet).

Have I rambled on enough?

Hi Darkthoughts - I grew up in Weybridge, Surrey.
& NeedfulKings - I am beyond jealous. We went to Maui & I want to live there.
Our next trip will be to Kauai. find a lil piece of property. start a lil business. grab a lil sunshine. oops, my dream is showing!
nice pic!
Aloha

:D Yeah, you see where I am in relation to the "No Alcohol" sign!!!

It was nice and Kauai was a different pace than Maui, but the beauty was amazing! We took a trip up the Na' Pali coast and aside from whales and dolphins, we saw the coast!!! :)

We'd love to live on the islands for a while. The weather is great!!!!

Awesome. I was stationed in Hawaii for two years back in the '70's. My favorite side trip was Kauai! Did you trek into the Waimea Canyon? Did you hike into the rain forest at all. Simply awesome. As a bonus I met Warren Zevon in a bar while I was there last time! He wasn't famous back then!

I'd love to go back.

Yes, we did drive up into Waimea Canyon. We didn't hike much, due to time constraints, but this was spectacular!!!! These pictures don't come close to showing the true splendor. Cool about you meeting Zevon!!! :D

My apologies for being absent the past days...my wife is in Chicago so am single parenting...late into work, then madness to try to cram 11 hours of work into 6 then home to do the evening routine. I should be back next week more regularly but then I am off on holiday skiing on Feb 15-24.

How's everything going, Wiz? How's your father-in-law doing?

Hope to chat soon. Sorry I missed your call the other day. If you are still looking for cookies. I can probably get you some after they come in at the end of the month. They won't help Kyra, so if that's the only reason to buy them, you can get them closer! LOL

Father-in-law not doing so well now (leukemia). Just brought the kids back from Chicago and a big change since we saw him in October. Nurses say he is in the end stages (but in September they gave him only a month to live). We'll just have to see. I miss this place. Hope to be back more fully soon.

You're an old Texan prairie dog, or is it armadillo. Never seen one of those ugly rascals, so guess we are about even.

Great pictures everyone...RF and Scoogs

and thank you ever so much for your thoughts regarding my father-in-law.

My life is a whirling dervish these days...a couple "normal" days in the office this week but then this Friday nite, our once-in-a-lifetime ski trip here:

Wengen Switzerland

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Wengen_Ski.JPG

We will return Sunday the 24th, so I will be missing all of you some more it seems...but, our family could use a little togetherness time, so don't begrudge us that.

Sir_Boomme
02-12-2008, 10:24 AM
wow...what a shame.... someone scribbled lines all over your nice mountain picture. now you can't hang it on yer wall.

that would be armadillos here in austin.... lots of them... and possums. no prairies around cental texas, it's the hill country... you'd have to turn to bob for texas prairie doggies.

have fun skiing, you deserve a break (don't break anything)...and send me some snow. ha ha

Kenosha, WI. As far South East as you can go in the state. Basically right between Milwaukee and Chicago.
Crazy winter so far. We went from getting hit by multiple tornados and a few days of almost 70 degree weather in eary January to being buried under snow every few days. I'm officially ready for Spring...

Wiz and RF, looks like you both planned some great vacations! Have fun!

SB, I'll have some snow shipped down to you ASAP.
