Great work! It's not the first time he's taken down listings, but it sounds like enough evidence has finally been presented to bring him down for good.

I'd love to see this guy nailed to the wall (nailed to his wall?). PM me if there is anything I can do to help

hero isn't a big enough word; you sir, are a god amongst mortals. even if they can't nail him, it certainly sends a message.

I'm in awe, Room 217 Caretaker! I have seen this brennan's listings on eBay an they have never felt right. Great work! All of you seem so well versed in King's signatures, I would like to get an opinion of one I am seriously considering. I lean toward legit, but the "b" and the "g" trouble me. Forgive me if I am not posting this right (none of my grandkids are here to help!)

we should seriously have a post for who finds the absolute worse frauds on ebay.
This would definitely be a contender :emot-roflolmao:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stephen-King-Four-Past-Midnight-SIGNED-1st-ed-HC-/200944384493?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item2ec937f9ed

I like his description as well - if you don't like it and return it then buyer needs to pay shipping fees (which were listed as $13 for economy to Cali - outrageous) and 20% restocking fee equal to bin price - which makes no sense - so basically to return it you'd have to pay twice for the crappy book - would anyone here contact this person and just tell them to take it down?

I just messaged him telling him I am reporting the forgery and that he is committing a felony.

Let's see what happens.

He isn't as bad as brennan, but still one less forgery is a victory.

Taken down:

Ralph, this is really an impressive effort on your part. I can't wait to see how this is going to eventually turn out. You deserve a tremendous amount of credit and a big "Thank You" from all of us. Another message board I frequent has a "Hall of Fame" section and I think that your part in this deserves a spot if we ever start one here....no matter how it turns out with law enforcement. Great effort! Thanks!

I wonder how many of these sellers are knowingly selling forgeries and how many believe what they have is legit but lack the knowledge to know otherwise.

And nice work Ralph. Can't wait to hear the results of all this.

Great question Joe315. I spend a ton of time monitoring Ebay, Abe Books, etc. looking for possible forged books. Not to nail someone but to educate myself better on signatures. When someone is professionally confronted/questioned about a signature, the sellers that lack the knowledge seem to be genuine sorry and want to learn more. However, those who flat out know they are selling forged books (no matter if they create the forgery themselves, have someone do the forgery, or knowingly buy one to resell) get combative, aggressive, name calling, and flat out nasty.

It has been my experience in the past with known forgers, they don't think, or act like they are doing anything wrong. If they knew just half the laws on this, especially mailing a forged book, they wouldn't even consider doing it again after the first warning.

You do have a point and I am sure it occurs on occasion, However repeat offenders are too common.

It is too obvious when on a regular basis we can see Brennan has bought a book then resold it a month later with a signature.....
and when they are back dated he makes the evidence abundantly clear that he knows what he is doing and is a total aggressive fraud.

I've been in touch with the agent in charge. They are asking for anyone that has bought suspect signed books inside or outside of Ebay from brennan2984

I need this information by Friday of this week. Please do not post the information on this thread due to outside people reading these threads. Only through PM.

I think FINEFIRSTEDITIONS (http://myworld.ebay.com/finefirsteditions?_trksid=p2047675.l2559) and brennan2984 are the same person.

I doubt they are the same person.. but anyways, I was going over some Obama listings, and came across this horrible signature:

I haven't been contacting buyers from his feedback, another person assigned to the case is. I offered to gather
Information from our family here to help build the case.

Speaking of building a case, this won't happen over night. I had no idea everything involved in putting a case together. Some really great news.......Lou, the seller that Brennan bought Book of the Dead from and buyer turned around and placed a forged King signature in it is 100% behind what we are doing. Even though Brennan pulled the auction and didnt sell it, he still posted a forged signature on Ebay. That is a big NO NO.

I think it is one of those Sharpie signatures that is tough to make a call on.

I think it is legit..but not staking my life on it.

What about the Lisey's story I have in the post above?

I had no doubts when I bought it....but now that I see that Sharpie signature...I am at 99%.

I think that one is probably OK. The "p" in Stephen looks like it doesn't go down as far as usual but I can't find much else wrong with it. Not the best but likely legit.

When I saw these pics here I guessed where they may have been from and had to go to the listing to see if seller stated.
I remembered someone standing outside the Colbert show June 6th with a copy like that of Salem's Lot and others with the shown misc. titles.
These guys were with the crew obviously not collectors of King; just obnoxious collectors of sigs.
The sigs look rushed as books were being shoved in front of King as fast as they could while he was attempting to walk in the entrance.
They are signed at an angle, very slanted unlike sigs when King is seated. This can be what one gets when books are signed on the go.
I hate to endorse these as legit however when I checked the listing, sure enough he states they came from exactly where I was assuming.

PS: None of these morons had the sense to bring a copy of Joyland to be signed which had just been released two days prior JUNE 4TH..
I was the only one prepared and who walked away with Joyland signed there (along with various GBODC items).

Thanks for the responses.

I'm very leery now about flatsigned & inscribed signatures after having bought a probable forgery.

These looked almost right to me. The felt pen was a red flag though. As was the less than stellar selection of novels. I could tell that the same person signed all three, but wasn't certain it was King.

They are certainly overpriced.

PSA/DNA Sticker VS Patrick's Children with a crayon? I'll take the added value crayon artwork.

Signature obtained in person my ass.

I wrote him and asked who Stephm King is.

He replied: "Trying to be funny? Lol yeah I put that on there showing it wasn't a reproduction or some kind of fake. It was a gift from my Grandmother who is the one that obtained it in person.

I got an actual reply from the seller. Here it is:

I could write a letter documenting it's authenticity, detailing when and where it was signed if you would like. He signed it for me at Fenway Park earlier this year in Boston. As I'm sure you know, he is a very tough autograph, so this is a nice unique item signed by King. As you can see, it is also authenticated by PSA/DNA the leader in certifying authentic autographs.

:wtf:
"I could write a letter documenting it's authenticity". Hell, I could write a letter authenticating my Liberty Bell replica that's signed by Benjamin Franklin, but that don't mean he signed the damn thing.

But did he???

Dear sir,

Having been both a seller and buyer in the antiquarian business for over a decade, I take great pride in my reputation as an honest dealer. To be honest, I'm a bit confused as to why you would send me this message. Did you read the description I wrote? After reading it, I suspect you will have a better understanding of my thoughts pertaining to the legitimacy of these signatures and why I am still offering them to anyone who may be interested. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you have after reading it and do sincerely thank you for the message.
Warmest regards,

As big a fan as, King is known to be, it would seem ridiculous for them to have him sign a baseball commemorating their first series win in 86 years!!! Then again, maybe it was a "money grab". Still, I would be very hesitant, well I would never in any case, even if the sig was not extremely questionable.

If I was marketing it and had the rights, as I never would even if paid to do it, I would have draggeed out every deserving Boston player from the "drought" before I asked "Stephen King". No offense, just WTF?

I'm not sure why you don't believe it to be authentic. Here was a sharpie signature that was deemed authentic by a few people on this website that matches perfectly:

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Stephen-King-signed-Christine-Replica-License-Plate-PSA-DNA-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/EmYAAMXQO21RvLkL/$%28KGrHqN,!okFGpcHnHTHBRvLkLgS-!~~60_57.JPG

As far as anything else goes, I obtain all of my autographs by myself. I don't pay people in other cities to get autographs that I don't see myself being signed. I have plenty of proof that I was in CT for the Hartford event, and got King numerous times down there.

Furthermore, as I stated above, I just saw him a few weeks ago and he was absurdly tough to obtain.

The whole point of posting recent signatures is to show and compare what I have received recently, to others in that time frame. Not many people on this forum have gone out and actually obtained King outside of a book event, or are familiar with his newer sloppier signatures so it is important to show these comparisons.

I strongly disagree. The folks on this forum have obtained hundreds if not thousands of signatures over the last 30 years in many different forums and a lot
of signatures most recently at several well attended events. I've got a dozen recent "sloppy" signatures, funny none are with a felt tip pen.
I am not saying whether the Joyland is legit or not but it sure helps credibility when you have some provenance.

WeDealInLead
09-15-2013, 08:19 AM
So basically, "redsoxfan" can't win this argument. If his signatures are similar to the recent ones, and he provides examples of them, he could be faking them because why would he be faking an older style. If the signatures he obtains now differ from King's current style, then there will be people on here posting pictures of current signatures and saying his are fakes.

Sentinel, that's good for you but he is not the only forum member who has obtained a sharpie signature that was legit. I'm not arguing the legitimacy of that particular signature but our members have posted 100% legitimate signatures that they obtained (from the Rock Bottom Remainders gig) that were signed with a sharpie.

As far as provenance goes... what do you suggest? Short of someone snapping a picture of you while King is signing your book, there is no provenance IMO. You can provide a picture of King signing some book from the event you claim you were at, you can even provide a ticket to the event and none of that is proof enough that your signature is legitimate. The signature either looks and feel legit or it doesn't, "provenance" be damned.

redsoxfan565
09-15-2013, 08:35 AM
The problem with King is, when he does finally sign you can get more than 1 book signed. It's very difficult to get video proof of him signing while trying to get more than 1 item done. Not to mention, he does not like to take photos with, so Ive never wanted to piss him off by taking a camera out. I've got a few clips of him signing in CT recently, but they only briefly show one of the books (Eye of the Dragon, which isn't even listed yet) getting done.

It is ironic though, the ones posting these comments are also the ones saying they won't comment on the authenticity of the signature.

I spend a lot of time and money obtaining authentic signatures. I've said before you guys can compare the signatures in my store to that of other authentic examples (not just King, and be satisfied that they match up). I specialize in a lot of high end signatures, especially Presidents, including signatures of President Obama. King is just one of those in recent years that I've had access to in/around Boston, and at various book events.

I wouldn't risk my reputation selling fake or forged autographs. If you want to believe that, or not that's on you. I appreciate all those who have said that they believe my signatures to be authentic and I'd hope that some of you who are on the fence judge for yourself by the signatures and not by any pre-conceived notions about autograph dealers, or whatever.

Thanks
Nick

At the risk of annoying another member.......... I will take the stand as saying I do not believe it legit. I would not have it.

I think it is legit.

Ditto

Actually, if you asked my opinion, I would say it is legit. That's not what I was disagreeing with.
I was challenging your statement that many people on here haven't acquired signatures outside of
events and hadn't obtained recent signatures.

What he said

So basically, "redsoxfan" can't win this argument.
As far as provenance goes... what do you suggest? Short of someone snapping a picture of you while King is signing your book, there is no provenance IMO.

But also what he said. If I were in the business of selling autographs I would make a point of resolving the provenance issue. I mentioned before you could have someone shadow you and his sole job is snapping picture after picture of him signing. Im not sure where the idea came from that King did not like his picture taken. Every event, meet and greet etc Ive been to he doesnt seem to have a problem with it at all (though the handlers demand the flash be turned off). Regardless, there are some sigs that are just too butt ugly to own whether they are legit or not. Here's one I obtained at the Rock Bottom event. Im ok with it in my collection because I watched him sign it but I would never touch this with a fifty foot pole if it was being offered for sale no matter what provenance was included.

It's the forgeries market. All you have to do is add a disclaimer.

Randall Flagg

ebay's policies actually forbid such disclaimers, but unless several people complain the fraudsters persist.

How I report on a seller's forgeries on eBay? I've found one villain who faked Umberto Eco (am fan of him too) sig.
I suggest here that when a seller tries to sell a fake signature on eBay - at least 5 members (we can choose a loyal team to do that) would report on him to eBay management, at least this would somehow decrease the tsunamy of fake sigs that kills our collecting hobby.

Look on the lower right of the title section of the ad, before the description. There will be a link to print and a link report an item. Click "Report and item." Select "Copyright and trademark" then "Counterfeit item or authenticity disclaimer" then "Counterfeit, fake, or replica items." You will then be able to give a brief description of the problem.

Reported. I emailed the seller a few days ago, telling him it was a fake. This was his response...

"Dear sir,
I agree. Personally, I don't believe the signature is authentic.
If you read the lengthy description I wrote, you would already know this.
However, the professionals who I paid to authenticate this signature,
disagree with us and their determination is inconclusive. They, along with
the antiquarian book seller I purchased this book from, believe the
signature to be genuine and/or can't say with 100% certainty whether it is
or is not authentic. For that reason, I am selling this book but have gone
to great lengths to fully articulate how I do not think the signature is
genuine. I would urge anyone interested in this book to actually read what
I wrote and then make their own determination. I appreciate your message
and do applaud you for taking the initiative to write me with your
thoughts/opinion."

Hopefully he gets banned soon!
