Does this seller just have a million bookplates? Something seems wrong, all of the bookplate shots are/were the same:
Cujo by Stephen King SIGNED (1982, Paperback) #WS (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cujo-by-Stephen-King-SIGNED-1982-Paperback-WS-/390565859975?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item5aef8a1287)

He never stops:
STEPHEN KING SIGNED REGULATORS Richard Bachman 1st FIRST LIMITED RARE DUTTON MT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEPHEN-KING-SIGNED-REGULATORS-Richard-Bachman-1st-FIRST-LIMITED-RARE-DUTTON-MT-/140941904244?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item20d0cac974)

Actually, "The Reculators" looks pretty good, but I'm a neophyte.

What worries me is if Brennan is selling all these books and then the people that bought them start selling them we lose the origin of Brennon Books. i can't buy any books from EBAY! Unless they are S/L

I agree 100%, it's really not worth the risk.

Agree. The seller also has three other King books for sale currently on eBay and they are all forgeries. I'm no expert on Obama's signature but I'll bet that copy of DREAMS FROM MY FATHER is forged too.

The Obamas this seller has up and has sold are horrible forgeries.

Finally received a reply:

"Hello,

Thank you for your interest in this item. I have spoken with the sales department and they have OK'd your request. What that have specified is that you pay the price as listed on eBay with shipping and they will in-turn refund the shipping amount once the purchase occurs. Let us know if you have any questions. Also, after purchase, please email us your complete shipping address along with a daytime telephone number to be used for shipping purposes as FedEx will not ship without one.

He's stocking up. He'll be back. I emailed him about that signed pic with the cat and straight up told him it was a fake and that it was unsigned in his "feedback left for others." He replied he gets collectors to sign things for him or he buys signed books. He went on to say he'll take it down and try to get a refund from the seller. Real amateur hour comedy shit here. He ended up relisting it and I dropped him a line saying "Did you think I'm not watching?" and that I had eBay phone # in another tab. He then explained he forgot to return the picture and took it down again.

The guy's a scumbag.

One of his latest is a 'signed' 2nd state Salem's Lot. When I saw the listing, I was incredibly upset that he would add a fake sig to that book. Turns out it's a loose signed bookplate. Still fake, obviously, but he's trying to get $1,300 for it!!

Kingfan24
04-03-2013, 04:22 PM
why do you have doubts?

killbourne
04-03-2013, 04:36 PM
why do you have doubts?
1) with best wishes, especially the w in "with" and "wishes"
2) stephen, esepcially the "hen" and the "n" and beginning of the loop
3) King..well, the whole thing

Those things bother me. It also bothers me that there isnt really anything about the signature that I feel confident about as a whole. I know that his signatures can get "wild" sometimes due to being tired or being rushed. So, when comparing, I like to see more "points" in the signature that matches up to what we have examples of in the gallery, especially around the same timeline( if something is really strange, I look for an example outside the timeline to see if he has done something similiar). That's my method when judging his signature.

I think it's legit and very cool. Interesting how the inscription and Bachman sig look so much better (less sloppy) then the King signature. He must really be sick and tired of signing his name. It's a UK edition so to me not worth the 400+ he had it listed for but I would pay around 200 or so.

I agree that the inscription writing is passable but the signature itself is troublesome. The "King" of course is terrible and now that it has been cropped out I don't really like the "Stephen" much either. Just a feeling. If it were me I would leave this one alone. I'm just not sure.

In a way. Just a small test run.

People have submitted quite a few (100+) dated inscriptions. Before I create a thread/post with them in calendar order, I will need to solicit opinions so that I reduce the chances of posting a bogus signature.

The UK N&D with "Boo" is mine. Way back when Shibus gave me his stamp of approval before I bought it so Im glad you guys agree its legit.
Looking at some of those images posted really shook up my confidence in being able to tell good from bad. If they are all legit theres so much variation!

Real versus fake is a true dilemma I think for all of us. After the signatures that King did last summer at the last Rock Bottom Remainders concert (truely a NIGHTMARE), that threw me into a spin! Those RBR signatures were so damned awful if you had plopped almost any of those in front of me I'd have said fake without a second glance...but I'd have been dead wrong. I had members here obtain two signatures for me in two key books in my collection (for which I am FOREVER grateful) but I almost wish I'd have waited to get them signed at another time. I have no provenence thay are real (to put with the books) other than the knowledge that my friends obtained the "real deal" for me last summer.

Also, while there are some really atrocious fakes still out there on eBay etc....there clearly are some books out there where a lot of the inscription/sig looks fine, but there is one word, several letters etc. that give rise to questioning....and we've seen members here (with good eyes for this sort of thing) split between good and bad votes on some sigs. Without a doubt, I'd say some sigs wse all say are legit are actually fakes and vice versa. I bet we as a group get it 90%+ right, but as many of you state..."it all comes down to whether you are comfortable having it in your own collection." If there is that niggling doubt in the back of your brain, you are always looking for a better copy for yourself.

And as for Betts, I will say this....I'm NOT perfect. I like to think I get it right better than 90% of the time (and I have gone to some of you for opinions many times), but have any "clever" fakes made it by me...I'd have to say yes. I WILL SAY THIS (and I think you all know this anyway)...IF YOU BUY SOMETHING FROM ME AND ARE NOT TOTALLY SATISFIED, I WILL TAKE IT BACK AND REFUND YOU YOUR MONEY...NO QUESTIONS ASKED. And you know this too...I would NEVER willingly sell a fake to anyone...that would just be stupid on my part.

Just had to say these things....BE CAREFUL out there! I am eternally grateful for all of you and your opinions regarding King signatures. We have to help each other out because no one here can get it right 100% of the time.

Is Brennan (real name Don) reading this forum? I ask because of this inscription:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEPHEN-KING-SIGNED-Salems-Lot-1st-Edition-Q37-Traycase-LIMITED-1975-SUPER-RARE-/140951946668?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item20d16405ac

I'm pretty sure we at some point discussed an inscription to someone named Peggy. Or maybe he even lifted it from one of the books about King. The name definitely seems familiar.

It's just weird that he would either go over with a signed bookplate or that she'd have them lying around the house. She could've presented him with a book to sign when he was picking up the kids. I've never spoken to King in my life so I can't guarantee what he would do but, it doesn't seem likely he'd just show up with a signed bookplate.

I actually bought his first book. When he sent it he enclosed a sincere-sounding hand-written note. It seems he's got a bunch of SK books on his shelf he bought a "long time ago." I believe he just doesn't know what a real First is or how to suss one out. In any event, I sent him a very polite e-mail letting him know that there are specific ways to tell a First and that, so far, that's not what he has. I specifically mentioned that the 'Salem's Lot was not a First. I also invited him to contact me if he wanted any pointers or had any questions.

I haven't heard back, and I guess his 'Salem's is still up, so I'm not sure what he thought of my information. I have the feeling he's an older gentleman.

This one's a better looking fake by the same seller - improving with practice. I was wondering (and hopeful) since I love this book but of course the low price was a red flag and I always check here first. I prefer the more amateur attempts since they're easier to spot.

I looked at that and wondered if it was really a good price or not. I have a spare CARRIE dj and would be interested in an unjacketed copy but I am really turned off by water damage of any type. For me any signs of moisture damage are a deal breaker. I don't think he is showing the water staining for a reason (unless that is some that I see under and to the left the first edition statement on the copyright page). I would ask for more pictures if considering this book.

This raises an interesting point. If you buy a book from a member of a professional antiquarian bookseller's association such as the ABA in the UK or ABAA in the US, you have a guarantee that what is being offered is genuine to the best of the seller's knowledge, and if it turns out otherwise - you have recourse through the seller directly (failing that you can complain to the association). It's a badge of honour really.

The seller of the Misery above is a member of the IOBA, which doesn't carry the same weight / prestige as the ABAA or ABA, but has a similar code of conduct. It's worth bearing in mind, because they should address any concerns that a member of the public thinks they are selling fake signatures.

Brennan's The Stand just sold. I think he's getting better at forgeries but he uses the same signature style in all the books.

I'm not an expert on King's signatures but I think it was the inscription that doesn't sit well this time. He has all these "signed" books and the handwritting style is nearly identical, like he dropped off a stack of books with King... and King mimicked his own style completely forgetting it changed over the years.

Junk is right. This seller is at the top of the BS radar right now.

However, I do fault the buyers who support this person as well. A little research (not hard to do) and you can locate groups that would gladly help with opinions on signatures. Unfortunately, as long as buyers keep putting there money down, sellers like this will exist.

Multiple complaints to ebay will temporarily remove the item, but contacting the seller is kind of like telling a pimp his whore has crabs...he'll either ignore you or smack you.

Yes! I try to do it in a professional way but 98% of the time the seller will respond with.....

(real responses by they way)

"you are a bottom feeder and only want me to drop my price so you can resell it for a profit"

"what a poor excuse of a person you are, trying to tell me my business. I know a legit Stephen King signature when I see one"

"go to hell"

"thank you for the kind words, however you are sadly mistaken. How long have you collected King books Mr. Mulleins"

"will remove the listing. I should have known when I picked it up at a yard sale for $1"

"hopefully you won't mind if I report YOU to Ebay for harassing me with non-sense information"

"This is embarrassing. Thank you mulleins for taking the time to show me why you think the signature is a fake. Removing the listing now" (seller never did)

"and you think you are educated enough to tell me the difference between a real King signature and a fake"

AND MY FAVORITE

"it's because people like you I have decided to stop selling my books on Ebay, I'm closing my Ebay store and moving it to Abebooks.com"

I collected the responses and have several others. However, I stopped contacting Ebay, sellers, buyers, etc. I've come to the conclusion........I can't fix stupid.

By the way.....one of those responses above is from a person that visits/posts on this site often. He's a REAL NICE person......NOT.

I don't like it, but it could be real.....damn sharpie signatures.

If I saw the signature by itself, I would say NO for sure...but with the inscription...I am thinking hmmmmmmm?

The fact that a dealer is selling it makes me doubt it even more.

Joe Hill makes it tough-for collector's; easier for frauds.
Our friend has an overpriced JH "Heart Shaped Box" which looks to be legit,
Joe Hill dated some of the books with a "." and some with a "-". I have examples of both.
